Why Drive will be the movie that is remembered in years to come
Film Noir is a genre of “life in the shadows” movies that became popular in America during
the uncertain times of World War II. Westerns have remained a shorthand for the American
psyche with their sullen outsiders with a personal code of honor bucking the system.
Samurai films mirror the lone avenger protagonist, but set against a longing for a lost
society of incorruptible values. Now and again a notable contemporary noir or western or
samurai film emerges with little fanfare amidst all the commercial cacophony of the louder,
bolder, more spectacular action films that rule today’s box office. One such gem of film
blending all three genres flashed out of the shadows briefly in 2011. It’s called “Drive”

Custom Breaking Bad FiguresCustom Breaking Bad Figures3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Last year I sculpted up a few portraits of Bryan Cranston as Walter White from my favorite show "Breaking Bad". I was finally able to put the finishing touches on 3 custom figures of Walt, all of which were given to the creators of the show this past week.
It's been a helluva lot of fun, and a tremendous thrill to get to meet the artists behind this terrific show that has been so inspiring to me. Kinder people you will not meet!
So here's a look at the finished custom figures. These were pieced together from various sources, using Hot Toys bodies, and clothes I found on ebay and then altered. The heads were all painted by some talented friends of mine, and they really brought Walt to life. It's been a lot of work to try and piece these together in my free time, but I really enjoyed doing it.
ps- A random winner was chosen from my last giveaway. I'll do another giveaway in the coming months, I'm sure. thanks!
Announcing the deviantART Creative GrantsAnnouncing the deviantART Creative GrantsAnnouncing the deviantART Creative Grants3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
At deviantART, we have spent the past 11 years building a place where artists can share and discuss their work and get inspired by the work of their contemporaries. A noble cause, for certain, but we would like to be so much more to our beloved community of brilliant creatives. Starting today, deviantART will also be a means of inspiration in an entirely new way with financial support for art.
On 3 month cycles, deviantART will accept applications from artists seeking to fund art-related projects. A panel called the Creative Grants Board will pick those projects that they believe will benefit particularly from a Grant and give those artists the support they need to make it happen. The lucky few who are chosen to receive Grants will also be given a beautiful accolade on their deviantART Profile Page to celebrate their succes
Jobs and Streaming and StuffSo the beginning of this year has been interesting. I'm taking on a full time job (basically) and doing paintings and concept work after I get home. I've been working on concepts for some really cool projects involving games and animation, a guy I know contacted me to possibly work on a sci-fi comic, and I've been writing my own sci-fi story I haven't been able to stream any of this work I've been doing because either a lot of it is for clients who don't want their IP shared with the world just yet, or I'm not ready to share with the world just yet. I feel like, I try to rush to share. Like I'm so excited for people to see my work, that I rush it. I'm not an artist who wants to keep everything close to me. Like, as long as you give me credit, and don't try to make money off of it, post wherever the fuck you want.Jobs and Streaming and Stuff1 year ago in Personal More Like This

'For exposure' - a warning to artistsI ran into this Twitter page a few days ago. It's a collection of real comments that artists get all the time asking them to work for free, or, as these people often prefer to say, "for exposure".'For exposure' - a warning to artists2 years ago in Personal More Like This
People like this are usually trying to guilt-trip artists into taking on massive projects for no pay, claiming it'll be good advertisement or that they'll get paid once the project becomes a success. The truth is, the chances of getting picked up by a major studio are extremely small. The so-called free advertisement the artist may or may not end up getting is usually not worth the effort.
Just to give you a taste of the disrespect for an artist's time and energy that some people have, here's a choice quote:
"Need Animator-I have a story that's 4 seasons long, 10 episodes each. looking for maximum quality. No pay. I will warn that I am very picky"
Does this person even realize the amount of work that goes into animation? Depending on the
Anime: home of the arsehole.I can list a whole range of eastern-born cartoons that I think look absolutely gorgeous, and whose visual style I wish very much that I could emulate.Anime: home of the arsehole.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Only a handful of those, however, can I refer to as being "good". Or even "tolerable".
Having watched them for most of my life, going back to things like Mysterious Cities of Gold and the original Astro Boy, I can say with a certain degree of authority that: Japanese storytelling is a bit wank. Daring and dynamic visuals, sure. Crap narrative.
And it can't ALL be blamed on "bad translation".
There's a wide range of gripes to be had, but chief among them these days is that the major characters, those who one would assume you're to root for, across however many episodes the series consists of, are generally complete and utter dicks.
I'm currently wading through Gurren Lagann, a series which people have raved about for a while but which I'd not had the chance to watch until now (spoiler approaching, should you be in the same boat).
Are Cartoons now getting better than Animes?Ok Long time not write some journal and like the tittle says I thinks this will be a controversial one XD. I think you guys already known how I been complaining about the lack in now more than 4 years of GOOD animes and how Japanese animation is getting worse and worse everyday, the amazing style that once I love and can't stop watching almost any single series I get to my hands when it was REALLY DIFFICULT get a Anime series (damn you internet for make it so damn easily for kids today), today only you can hardly get a passable 2 or 3 episodes and then became boring and predictable, what is happens? is really Japanese masters loosing their mojo? Not like there is no songle series of anime to see, so far in this session the only serie catch my eye was Lupin the Third: Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna (aww have to be a Legend ), and I was getting into Saint Seiya Omega when I saw the first 2 episodes I say...ok pass....then I saw the 3 episode...Really?....SAINTS...IN A SCHOOL....REALLY....REALLAre Cartoons now getting better than Animes?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Happy New YearLet's all start the year off with some stuff I wish I had growing up:Happy New Year1 year ago in Personal More Like This
So I read an article last night on people who are mentally strong and the DO NOTS of being that person.
I took those notes, and listed them, including how I learned to overcome these obstacles. It's a long read, sorry, but I figured this year it's time to open up and share that knowledge that I was once taught by someone I consider my mentor, business partner and bestfriend, Stephan.
1. Don't waste time feeling sorry for yourself - I used to feel this way as a kid. I was a child of divorce, and used it as a crutch when I was younger. I hate a (mentally) abusive step-mom who would constantly take me down. I began to feel that maybe it was true, and I wasn't going to be the person I wanted to be.
You can't think that way. No one likes or enjoys a Debbie Downer. Someone who is constantly on the negative or pining for sympathy. I began to overcome these complications with art or writing. Using tha
Five Tips to Starting FreelancingSo, you're tired of being unemployed. You've been stuck at home for the umpteenth month in a row, a new season of The Legend of Korra is still a year off, and your government support checks (should you be lucky to still be getting them) won't even come close to affording you a bus ticket to Everfree Northwest. Your evaluation of life is the same dissertation of tedium and monotony as Helen Keller's review of Chinese Democracy.Five Tips to Starting Freelancing3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
You know, pretty much on par with every other review of Chinese Democracy.
But know what? If you can't find a job, you'll make a job! Screw finding work, and screw the employers who keep dismissing your applications for being "over qualified" like that Bachelors of Science in Graphic Design is as detrimental to your character as being a registered felon. Screw them and that stupid help wanted sign at Quiznos. Now you're freelancing, baby.

Attend life drawing classes over the summer. Blegh.
Take a sketchbook with you everywhere you go, and fill up ten of those bad boys at the coffee shop. Pfft.
Let's be honest here. We all want to become better artists, like, right frickin' now. We don't even want to have to suffer through hour-long tutorials of some pompous snooty hack bloviating over the intricate methods of drawing eyes on YouTube. We want progress, we want improvement, and we want it on our desk in ten minutes ago!
Fine, fine, I hear ya'. While these aren't going to make an instant Leonardo da Vinci out of you, these might get you up to...ehh...Basquiat caliber. Sure, I've made tutorials, but those are more about setting up Photoshop for the sake of coloring an image, and not so much building yourself artistically. Those are more technical lessons. Artistically
Titillation vs. SexismBoobs.Titillation vs. Sexism5 months ago in Personal More Like This
Guys are fascinated by them.
Through single-digit ages, they find the very concept of them hilarious, and when puberty kicks in the mere thought of lady-lumps generally causes some movement in the trouser department. These weak-willed creatures will follow them anywhere and they will do almost anything if it means simply being permitted to gaze upon them for a few moments more.
The entertainment industries, from the big movie makers to the lowly art whores (like me) know this, and have played upon it for years in order to separate males from their money. As a result, mass media is awash with the female form in all manner of provocative poses and dress.
Many women are fed up with this, but is the whole thing “sexist”?
Well, it’s impossible and indeed wrong to say a whole industry is one thing or another. Ultimately it’s all one, big, dumb organism that simply moves with the cultural winds. It perpetuates what sustains it. It’s only when you break it

THE NEXT THREE YEARS OF MY LIFE
I had received a job offer at Microsoft. I guess this could have been one of my first 'big time' jobs, so I was a little ecstatic. It felt like a slow build to get to this point, after numerous indie games and under the table freelance jobs, but finally it had come.
I was working with my now best friend and business partner, Stephan, a suave German who I had met only a year or so prior. He had brought me into the fray, working with several other individuals who will, well, simply be known as individuals for privacy sake.
But yes, finally, I could put a professional company I

A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;
They were a reminder of the punishment we deser

Emulation and CreationI write this because I see a lot of this on Deviantart, and a few other places, and have been guilty of it myself way back when, so thought it might be good advice. I use Games Workshop as an example because thats what I have experience in, but it's equally applicable to super-heroes, manga, anime, all the popular genres.Emulation and Creation1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I loved drawing since when I was small, so when I came across Games Workshop, obviously I finally found a thing to draw that suited me and what I liked. There was no internet back when I was a kid, at least not freely available internet, so all my influences came from the codex's GW used to bring out. So I basically began to copy John Blanche, Adrian Smith, Mark Gibbons, all those fantasy artists. Harmless enough, it was essential drawing practice at the very least, and schools were never really supportive of that kind of art anyway, it was always paper-mache masks.
I wanted to be an artist for Games Workshop, because thats what I liked. I used to draw that stuf
