Are you caught in 'The Technique Trap?'Hello family! Chris Oatley wrote a very interesting post about what he's terming "The Technique Trap" over on his blog. He writes: "Unfortunately, technique is often the only thing young artists ever think about." I believe that this is true for two reasons: 1) I was caught up in this as a young artist trying to break into the comic book industry. Back in the day, I could only afford to attend the Chicago Comic Convention, and I would spend months working on my portfolio. I would finish it mere minutes before the con, and then walk in, past the 'original art' tables, and immediately cry at how horrible my portfolio is in comparison to the professional comic pages in front of me. I wanted to draw just like those guys! But as time passed, I realized that it was folly, and that I needed to learn how to tell a visual story, rather than just 'copy' what someone else was doing. And secondly, I get more questions about technique than anything else! And I have to be honest, it's easier to answAre you caught in 'The Technique Trap?'2 years ago in Personal More Like This

TUTORIAL - Tips for All ArtistsHello everyone!TUTORIAL - Tips for All Artists3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I have written a tutorial like this before here. But recently I have had more thoughts about it that I decided to share. As you may have noticed, I am not a professional artist, I am a hobbyist and self-taught, and what I will expose here is what I've learnt from my own experience. Even so, I hope this tutorial will be helpful to you!
Another note: English is not my first language, so I apologize if I commit any mistakes.
Feel free to correct my grammar any time, as well as make suggestions or asking questions!
This tutorial is for every kind of artist, but sometimes I will focus more on visual artists (since it's my speciality).
I believe that everyone can be an artist, and this tutorial has not only the purpose of providing advices and tips, but also motivation for all.
1. Your Image as an Artist on dA
2. Your Image as an Artist outside dA
3. Your Popularity
4. Your Art Process

Anyway, I'm also getting very very irritated with people on DA (more so those I don't even know).
I've been finding a lot of tracings of my most recent sketches (especially the commissioned ones) floating around the galleries. I'm getting fed up with it. I really don't appreciate my art being used for ANYTHING, especially without my permission (nor do they credit).
People, please, just stop it. Yes, I know it happens, but that doesn't mean I can't fucking rant about it. And bet your ass if I catch you using my artwork, I'll speak my mind all over your screen and you're not going to like it.

Fan Art Law
Mon Sep 10, 2012 by techgnotic
t seems there’s nothing quite as dear to the hearts of many of our deviants as their production of fan art, and at the same time, there is nothing so knotted with legal and ethical headaches. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the form of fan art it has also become one of the most frustratingly complicated. At some point, the sheer volume of fan art around a single property may become so large that the issue rises to another level of scrutiny by the creators of the original work.
With this dynamic in mind, we thought the following panel that Josh Wattles, our Advisor In Chief here at deviantART, and a mystery guest named Harold Smith, gave at Comic Con this year might be of immense help in understanding the ever evolving elements of fan art

Last year, I submitted a piece to a diversity contest, and like, it took me 10 or so hours to get the whole thing done for the contest. It was... Well you can see it in the photo in the link above.
But like, last week I got a call that only said " KCC"( This is my school's name: Kellogg Community College.) on my phone. and I was like " Holy fucking shit, my financial aid didn't go through and I'm going to have to pay for my classes." But it was a call about them wanting me to do a radio interview. And at that point I was practically in shock, and couldn't really say anything, so it was just inaudible sounds on my eeeennnd...
Tttthen! Then on Monday, of this week I got a call from KCC again and it was a jittery woman telling me that I was to attend an awards ceremony for the diversity contest, and I had won $100 on my piece.
Then I cried.
I am just really nervous about this coming monday and the ceremony.

DSC- LADY SIF - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2012The Lady Sif first appeared in Journey Into Mystery #102. Sister of Heimdall, Sif has been a companion of Thor and Balder since childhood. At an early age she showed great prowess as a warrior and was considered the best female warrior of all of Asgard, matched only by Brunnhilde. Like most Asgardians, Sif was born with golden hair. Hers, however, was turned black after Loki jealously cut it all off and replaced it with enchanted hair made by dwarves. She spends much of her time worrying about and searching for Thor, and often accompanies him into battle. At one point she was given to the death goddess Hela by a giant in exchange for immortality, but Thor saved her by offering himself in her place. Hela was so impressed that she let them both go.DSC- LADY SIF - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 20123 years ago in Personal More Like This

"Explicit Pornography"?! Aw, jeez, guys. You must have the worst collection of porn on the planet to think that was explicit.
A 90s Rochelle Swanson outing was more explicit that that pic, and that stuff got aired, uncut, on terrestrial UK TV (god bless you Channel 5, you made the young Jack jolly).
I believe that, for something to be labelled "explicit", SOMETHING must be visibly going in SOMEWHERE. Such was not the case in the offending image,

What is SketchBomb?Hey everyone,What is SketchBomb?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's been a while since I've really taken a minute to explain SketchBomb for those who are unaware.
SketchBomb is a sketch group I started in March of 2010 in San Francisco. I was working as a freelance artist and craved face-to-face interaction with artists again. I posted where I'd be, and hoped people would show up. A small group of enthusiastic artists did and now we've been going for three years and have tons of attendees. We even have chapters in other parts of the country.
What do we do? We have themes that we all sketch towards, we share the sketches everyone does with the entire group, and we have a lot of fun. SketchBomb meets once a month, on a Saturday (announced ahead of time), at 8 PM. Anyone is welcome to attend. We have a very open environment and everyone's contributions are given equal time in the spotlight. I've been to other sketch groups that don't have such an open philosophy and it was a very important element for me to try and get right.

While I was browsing more about it, I stumbled across a video for the Japanese version of the game on youtube. This particular cinematic scene was changed for the American version.
During a specific cut-scene you are fighting against an older man who 'changes' into a tentacle like creature. Now, in the American version the tentacle comes out of the mans stomach. In the Japanese version, the tentacle comes out from his ass and proceeds to protrude between his legs, simulating a large tentacle like penis, in which he attacks you with (lolgottalovethemjapanese). This bothers me, why? Because the 'penis' like placement of the tentacle was symbolic and reflected back to events t

Cultural Appropriation 101This news article touches upon subjects that are sensitive to many people. Ordinarily, I try my best to avoid drama and online conflict, but I feel that this growing fashion trend needs to be addressed before it becomes the popular thing to do. It is my hope that through calm, rational discussion and input from users, we can start a dialogue that puts an end to ignorance and puts artists on the path towards creating beautiful works of art that do not unintentionally offend various groups of people.Cultural Appropriation 1014 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The issue I am speaking of is Cultural Appropriation.
I started noticing the beginning of this trend around last summer. Art and fashion seem to have taken a turn towards incorporating stereotypes of First Nations people, creating photoshoots, clothing and artwork featuring warbonnets, feathered headbands, eagles, dream catchers, moccasins and more. This fashion trend appropriates the culture of First Nations people, usually without consent, or thought for what is considered sacred. Often, p

The Art Institutes are a scam! The goal of this group is to raise awareness of the fact that the heavily advertised "Art Institutes" are not real art schools, but corporate owned diploma mills that exploit young people’s dreams to sell fake education for ungodly amounts of money. I went briefly and dropped out after realizing my $120,000 ‘education’ was not going to get me a job anywhere or allow me entrance to a Grad school. Their over 40 locations are owned by the Education Management Corporation(EDMC) which is possibly the main villain in today’s corporate education scam. They have been sued many times, but are still in operation and growing. Now they have several other chains of schools other than the Art Institutes (Brown Mackie College, Southern University, Western State University, and Argosy University). In order to destroy them we must make sure everyone knows about this awful scheme so that they lose business and shut down on their own.The Art Institutes are a scam!5 years ago in Personal More Like This
