It's time for Fanime! :DHi everyone! Thank you all so much for the amazing birthday wishes and gifts! <3 It's been a crazy year for me working on the Axent Wear cat ear headphones that I designed, and learning to deal with the unpleasant business side of things (my co-founder has been impossible to work with). Because of all that, I haven't been able work on my comics or draw as much as I used to. However, I'll be back into full swing soon with new comic updates and lots more art and tutorials. I've also been meaning to livestream for a long time nowIt's time for Fanime! :D6 months ago in Personal More Like This
With that said, I'm super exited to see all of my friends again and to make new friends at Fanime this year! I'll be there for the entire con from May 22-25 in the San Jose Convention Center. As usual, I'll be in the Artist Alley (table 623) with prints and more! Feel free to come by and hang out!

Why we fall. - Edited with full postWhy we fall. - Edited with full post9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Art by Allison Smith.
"Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up."
One of my favorite lines from Batman Begins. However, there are moments where it's rather difficult to get back up, and sometimes we require that one special kick in the ass.
From each tumble, we learn a valuable lesson. A year or so ago, I had hit a personal wall that was proving too difficult to force through. Art, which is usually front and center, took a back sea--and while we've all had art blocks--that wasn't the only issue.
It began with my roommate of two years, whom had decided it was time to move else where. With such a sudden interruption, I had to find a new home and in less than 30 days.
Having also been through a bleak breakup months prior, and finding myself with no pending freelance work and

Eeeek, i loved that show so much! <3 <3 . Well, okay, i was more of a manga person, since i wasn't allowed to watch TV per se...but.....Anyways, I loved, loved Cardcaptor . I think it was the show/manga that got me started drawing xD. I had a huge crush on Syaoran . But i was like..11 xDWhat are your childhood favourite shows?3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Stolen art sold at conventionsHey guys! I had a great time at SacAnime but while I was there, I saw a vendor's booth called Hidden Supplies selling sakimichan's Kakashi paintingStolen art sold at conventions3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I asked her if she gave permission for this or not, and sure enough, she didn't. I think it's safe to say that the rest of the $25 mats sold at the booth were also using stolen art, but I don't recognize any of the artists. Here are some photos of the booth and all the mats are also listed on their website https://www.hiddensupplies.com/index.php?routeroduct/category&path=71. Please take a look and report the images you recognize to the respective artists so that they may take the proper legal actions against these these people. Thank you!

Harley Quinn Contest
In case you haven't heard yet, DC is holding a contest to hire fresh young artists to help work on the new Harley Quinn series. http://www.dccomics.com/node/305151 This is fantastic news for a lot of artists, as "breaking in" to the big comic book companies can be extraordinarily difficult to do and this helps level the playing field. However, the way they've chosen to hold the contest is to have everyone submit 4 illustrations based on 4 separate scripts... all of which depict Harley Quinn as suicidal and trying to kill herself "comically."
Now first off, I get the fact that Harley Quinn is part of the "Suicide Squad," and that these illustrations are likely poking fun at that. However I feel that fact falls on it's face since the term "Suicide Squa

Looking for Cosplayers!Sooo with Motherland Chronicles under way, I'm thinking I'll indulge myself and do all the things I haven't had a chance to in my career so far.Looking for Cosplayers!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Anime/manga was one of the biggest reasons I became interested in art at all, so cosplay is something I've hoped to photograph for a long while now but never really had a chance.
So!! If you're a cosplayer and would like to shoot with me please read on
I'm mostly into 90's fantasy stuff and here's a full list of stuff I'd love to shoot in alphabetical order:
Alichino, Angel Sanctuary , Arslan Senki, Blade of the Immortal, Claymore, Doll, FF6-8, Gantz, Guilty Gear, Magna Carta, Monster Hunter, Nana, Noblesse, Trinity Blood, War of Genesis III, Weiss Kreuz, and pretty much any characters by Yoshitaka Amano, Range Murata, Clamp and Hyung Tae Kim. But I'm open to stuff that I haven't seen/played before as well!
If you're in the NY area or will be coming by, please drop me a note with your work!!
And feel free to send me recommendations if you k
Art theft - my opinionI've had a increasing number of messages about art theft on DeviantArt recently. I think it's great that this community is concerned that artist's work is being used appropriately, and that individuals have the time and energy to draw attention to potentially contentious posts. I'd like to express my gratitude to those who have contacted me and hope that you will continue to do so if you feel it necessary.Art theft - my opinion3 years ago in Personal More Like This
However, I think it's important to get this stuff into perspective. Copying my work for practice isn't theft. It's extremely flattering for me and an entirely legitimate way to study. I copied other artist's work when I was starting out and I learned a great deal from those exercises. I'd suggest that there are many more accomplished artists than me whose work could be studied, but I have no problem with my work being used in this way.
My book, 'The Fantasy Artist's Figure Drawing Bible', specifically encourages this in fact. Anyone wanting to work from the line art provided in that

Inspiring videos from the topRecently I've been scouring TED talks... it's a bunch of videos from all these awesome people that are so inspiring and heartwarming. I did a poll a while back where 85% of you guys pretty much said that motivation was one of the most important factors to being an artist, and I think these videos can help everyone revive their drive, or push it even further.Inspiring videos from the top3 years ago in Personal More Like This

SKILLS JOURNALLately I was thinking that writing down your thoughts about how do you paint would be a good step to improve it. The mistakes you make, the objectives for the next artworks, what makes you feel proud of your last work - it all can be wrote down. I feel like I'm learning something new with every artwork I make. I am going to write about this from time to time in one or few sentences. It will be my Skills Journal ( I will uptade this page with every new thought ). Perhaps my own thoughts may help you with anything in your artistic activity. For some people, this may be something new or something obvious to others.SKILLS JOURNAL3 years ago in Personal More Like This
If you also write or you are going to write something similar, feel free to share. It is always a good opportunity to learn something from each other.
So for start, what I have learned from last painting:
Yep. Inspired from achievments from Blizzard Entertainment games. It is nice looking with avatars and also motivational.

The Danger of UrgencyJournal time!! I apologize for the length of this post, but I think it's important for artists, especially newer artists, to consider. Hopefully it will be of some use to you in your artistic journey. The Danger of Urgency6 months ago in Personal More Like This
SO... ConceptArt has been sending out emails to promo their study programs with little snippets of advice, some of them are good but one of them that came the other day really irks me. The first thing on their list is, "Study with a sense of urgency"
Now... this is my opinion, but I've heard similar sentiments from many other artists and creators who I would consider, "successful" in their field. And, in my opinion, "Study with a sense of urgency" is the absolute worst advice anyone could give to a beginner.
Yes, you need to work hard. The arts are a competitive field, and you need to push yourself if you want to climb the ladder. BUT in all of your hard work beware of mind sets like:
-"If I don't get good fast my dream job will disappear."
-"When this artist was my age they were still

What I should give my love
It answered me with silence,
I asked the darkened sea
Down where the fishes go
It answered me with silence,
Oh, I could give him weeping,
Or I could give him song
But how can I give silence
My whole life long?
