The Secret Drawing IngredientIf you're an artist of any kind it's extremely important to hone your craft and technical abilities. After all, the better you draw and the better you are at mastering the drawing tools you use - the easier it is to convey your unique message for public consumption. The Secret Drawing Ingredient2 years ago in Personal More Like This
But how important is technical ability, really? Obviously, it's very important. Understanding anatomy, light and shadow and perspective are key to solid drawing. It's important to always be improving in those departments. It's also very important to master the tools you use to draw with. Learning to render or color professionally can only increase your appeal to both fans and other professionals.
But what about developing artistic appeal on a much deeper level?
It's not just about finding a pleasing style. Anyone can do that with enough practice. You can always choose a popular artist and emulate his or her style. The blueprint is right there. But why d

I HATE THIS GUY. Seriously. I quit, LOL.I discovered Kim Jung Gi during my years living in South Korea when I came across his first sketchbook in '09. It was a blue and red bible of non-stop art. it made me cry. SEEING him do what he does, however, makes me contemplating giving up art altogether, lol. T________T #SoGoodI HATE THIS GUY. Seriously. .I have been accused of tracing by people on Tumblr and now on DeviantArt. I am seriously done with this place. I'm sorry I try drawing anatomically correct and actually work my ass off to make them legitimate. I am sorry I draw from observation and use stock photos to correct whatever I don't yet know about anatomy and all of that, because clearly I should know everything beforehand and I shouldn't ever try learning something from everything I do. I am sick and tired of people who have nothing better to do than to fuck up their lives by going completely virtual and fucking other people up. I can't take it anymore. I came here and got a Tumblr as well so I can share whatever I do and learn and connect/have a conversation with others. But clearly that isn't enough for some of you since you get so easily butthurt over anything and you make others feel the same amount of shit you make yourself feel by giving way too many useless fucks. Seriously, I will finish the commissions I have to fin.3 years ago in Personal More Like This

The Value of CriticismEvery artist, on some level, loves fanfare. Who doesn't? But most artists resist criticism. I've been guilty of it in the past myself. But for the most part, after I suck up my pride, I use it.The Value of Criticism7 months ago in Personal More Like This
Any time you put your work out there [ in a comic book or on the web or in a gallery ], you're up for criticism. Sometimes the critiques aren't necessarily valid. They're coming from fans or, in a lot of cases, keyboard warriors that just want to be negative for the sake of being negative. But in almost all cases, there's something to be learned by criticism.
My wife is a perfect example. She's not an artist, which is my usual go to excuse when debating the merits of those that might offer critiques of my work that I disagree with. My wife, can't draw. But she knows when a nose is off. Or if the lighting looks "weird". Or if an arm doesn't look right. Or if a drawing is just sorta dead. She has a good eye.&

Hey I wanted to start adding some new tools to my tool box...although I want to work my finals mainly traditionally, I wanted to really get into digital color and also concept art paintings as well...I think it will add some really neat things to my work....specifically atmosphere and depth/
so anything to do with digital coloring, matte painting, 3D concept art, and also digital painting. Not sure if there's a solid community to learn from and ask questions etc....been looking on youtube and there are a lot of tutorials...but I'd love to interact with other artists working in the mediums and programs.

Colour me an idealist pinko liberal.
Colour me a romantic arty-farty fantasist.
Colour me a hippy pacifist fence-sitter.
Most of my friends are heading for, or past, the big five O.
There's increasingly less time for bullshit.
To my eyes, my mind, my experience
- as an intermittently successful artist and writer, boutique publisher, digital pioneer for storytellers, dreamer (in the most iconoclast way), pessimistic optimist, father of three, husband, failure and champion -
it's all bullshit.
Nothing matters, beyond those we love and who love us
- at least not in any personally meaningful way.
The nature of civilization is to be in perpetual crisis
- and I fear we're in the thick of a bigger existential crisis than we, as a species, are prepared to acknowledge.
We feed on fear and triviality, and are in thrall of our baser instincts
- to duck, to hide, to run.
It's left to those without empathy to guide us.
Those without fear.
Those that will stand on the backs o

Tutorials and techniques 2It's time to refresh the tutorial journal! Added some new ones and removed those which, after some time, I found a bit misleading.Tutorials and techniques 23 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Below you'll find a list of tutorials I personally think of as the best on dA. If I have any problems with painting something I usually take a look at one of those.
Is there anything you're having troubles with? Need help looking for a good tutorial? Or maybe you'd like to see a video walk-through of me painting something?
I'm open for suggestions for what kind of tutorial/walk-through you'd like to see from me. If you're interested in anything, post your suggestions in the comments!

BronyCon!I'm finally back from BronyCon and just about caught up with everything I missed while I was away.BronyCon!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
BronyCon was an amazing experience, and I really hope to be able to go back and have just as much fun next year. I met amazing people, old and new. I have to admit, I'm always drawn to a con because of its event list and guests of honor, but afterwards I always reflect that the best part was meeting other bronies - meeting friends, old and new.
But BronyCon was also a particularly special con for me because I had an entry in their Sun and Moon art contest. While I had never held out much hope of placing well (I mean seriously, have you seen the talent in this community?), I was most excited just to have my work on display so that more people could see it. As I went back and forth past the art room all weekend, I did a few times catch people stopping by to take a look, at it w

taught or not being stressed as much these days. I continue to learn and train so I can strengthen and hone
my skills as an artist. I've been fortunate enough to have incredible mentors around me who are more than
generous with their knowledge and encouragement. It would be wrong of me not to share my knowledge
and I encourage you guys to do the same. It's an awesome thing teaching and learning. When you teach
, the student gets better from you're guidance, and you get better because you're constantly reinforcing your
knowledge and are forced to face your weaknesses. lol basically we can all suck together or get better together.

A Fun Week in Saskatoonhello my darlings,A Fun Week in Saskatoon3 years ago in Personal More Like This
what a fun and very, very busy week it's been in saskatoon!
i basically shot a set every day from monday to friday, attended the gallery event, danced my bum off at 302, and hung out with some of the most fantastic people on this planet of ours. i learned a lot and feel like i've grown even more as a model during my visit.. i also learned i'm quite the attraction at gay bars. o.o even though i'm enjoying myself very much, i'm ready to return home to my rabbits in calgary.
hopefully you're not too annoyed with all all my posts recently. i was murdered in a bathtub, became the queen of dragons, molested by tentacles, took to the skies with cranes, and i got to swing a bat covered in glass that looked a lot like a giant candy stick the last i still have yet to post and i still plan on posting a few more from each set~
until then, be sure to check out all the ones i've already posted.
here's some of my favorites!
