Similar Deviations

It is time for another Typography contest! The theme of this contest will be…

Bring your Type to Life

This may sound abstract at first, but to keep the theme as open as possible, I choose a rather abstract title. There are many directions in which you can go. You could choose an anthropomorphic direction, where you breathe life into letters and give them human or other animate characteristics. Another route would be to create the letters out of living objects, such as plants or animals.

Which direction you choose, maybe even a third or fourth one, does not matter. What matters is that your letters are brought to life!

What kind of letters you bring to life, words, glyphs or sentences, is 100% up to you. This contest has a more visual approach, so you will not be judged on the creativity of the meaning you choose to give to the letters. However, don't rush it! Even one letter can appear completely different than another. Be wise with the letters, words or sentences you choose.

I hope this theme will be inspiring, to both Traditional and Digital Typographers, maybe even for Photo Manipulators, and even a Typography Beginner can create something awesome! There is no limitation on the media you use. You will have almost 2 months time to enter a submission, so I will post a lot of reminders ;)

Let's get creative!

The contest is open for all media!

This means for Traditional, that you can use Watercolors, Oil, Pencil, Ink, Collage, Installation, Sculpture etc. There is no limit as to what you can use!
For Digital Media, this includes Photo Manipulation, Vector, Vexel, 3D as well as Drawings or Paintings. Again, the only limit is your imagination.
Of course, you can also submit a Mixed Media entry, in which you combine Traditional and Digital elements.

  • Must be a new deviation, submitted after July 1st, 2012.
  • Deadline is August 26th, 2012. Any submission after that will not be taken into consideration.

  • It must, obviously, contain Typography.
  • Any medium is allowed, Traditional & Digital, as well as Mixed Media.
  • Please remember to follow the deviantArt Submission Policy.
  • Credit any stock material you use: This includes Photography, Textures, Vector Resources and Fonts!
  • You can enter more than once, but only be under the top 3 with one entry.
  • Only Entries in the Contests > 2012 > Bring Your Type to Life gallery are accepted.

Announcing the deviantART Creative Grants

At deviantART, we have spent the past 11 years building a place where artists can share and discuss their work and get inspired by the work of their contemporaries. A noble cause, for certain, but we would like to be so much more to our beloved community of brilliant creatives. Starting today, deviantART will also be a means of inspiration in an entirely new way with financial support for art.

On 3 month cycles, deviantART will accept applications from artists seeking to fund art-related projects. A panel called the Creative Grants Board will pick those projects that they believe will benefit particularly from a Grant and give those artists the support they need to make it happen. The lucky few who are chosen to receive Grants will also be given a beautiful accolade on their deviantART Profile Page to celebrate their success.

All applications in a given cycle will be reviewed by members of the Board fairly and Grants will be given to as few or as many as the review panel deems appropriate within the budget of available funds. Grants will range between $250 and $750 per application for the first cycle of funding, with a total funding of $10,000 available.

  • Installation of an art exhibition
  • Additional artist materials or resources to support
    the production or public display of art

  • A piece of work that requires specific tools
  • Costs to run a creative event

If you're looking for money to pay your rent, go to classes, upgrade your Group to Super status, buy a Premium Membership, or pay off your student loans, this is not for you.

Before and After Competition!

Sun Jul 8, 2012, 11:26 AM

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:Something AWESOME this way comes!:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

Guess what?!! :excited:

As a final close-out to our Project Educate: Feedback Week, we have one more special treat! :woohoo:

You've critiqued like crazy, and you received some great critiques as well! Awesome job!! But what good are critiques if you don't ever use them? :boogie:

The first ever Feedback Frenzy Contest is nearly to a close. Fellow deviants, it's time to put those critiques into action! :eager:

Welcome to the Before & After Competition, hosted by

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:What is it?:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

The Before & After competition is a chance for you to take the critiques you received on an OLD work and put them into action in a NEW work. You are not redoing an old deviation, but rather using what you have learned in a brand new one. This is a Community Relations-backed competition, and we would love for you to participate!

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:When is it?:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

The Before & After competition will run from the time the Feedback Frenzy competition closes (July 8th at 11:59 PM PST) to August 31st at 11:59 PM PST. So, basically your final deviations, which you created with feedback in mind, must be created AND submitted between 09 July and 31 August, 2012. That's nearly two full months! :XD:

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:What do I do?:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

STEP 1. RIGHT AWAY (July 9th or later, but as soon as you know you are going to enter), you need to submit up to 2 "Before" deviations to FeedbackFrenzy in the BEFORE DEVIATIONS FOR BA CONTEST Gallery folder.

This should be a deviation you like but, more importantly, one for which you received feedback from which you really feel you can learn. Again, we must stress: You will NOT be remaking this specific deviation; you will be creating a new image based on the feedback. The FEEDBACK is what is
most important: is this feedback you can use to create something new? Choose wisely, as you cannot switch the deviation(s) out later.

We will be comparing the old deviation(s) with the new deviation with respect to adherence to the feedback and guidance you were given. If they told you to make your lighting more consistent, did you try to do so? HINT: Make sure there is room for improvement in the original deviation(s). ;)

Create a NEW deviation. Start from scratch; don't deconstruct and reconstruct the old deviation. It should, however, be somewhat related in that you are improving a technique or skill that you also used in the first deviation. So, for example, let's say you were told to add some depth to your foreground trees, and that's a piece of feedback you wanted to use. Then, obviously, you'd need foreground trees or some other foreground object to which depth could be added when you make the contest deviation. Similarly, if you were told to make lighting more consistent in your original deviation, then in the contest deviation you would clearly need to show a light source and how it consistently impacts other items in that scene. But again, you are not recreating the same deviation. Be creative.

If you didn't participate in Feedback Frenzy, it's okay. Any piece you have done recently (past 3 months) that you received constructive critique or feedback on will be fine. :)

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:How do I submit?:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

When you have finished your new deviation, you can submit it to deviantART in this gallery:

Note that this is a gallery on dA and not in the group. So, you would select it as your category when you actually submit the deviation to the site.

IMPORTANT: In your artist's comments, please copy and paste a link or thumb to the "Before" image and the feedback or critique(s) you used to create the image. We'd like to know which comments from it you used. Comments from other deviations besides the "Before" entry will not be considered.

Also IMPORTANT: In your artist's comments, please state that your deviation is an entry into the

You can only enter one time, so be careful to do your best work! :D

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:Other rules:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

:bulletpink: You may NOT edit the original ("Before") deviation following the start of the contest. You will automatically be disqualified if you do.
:bulletyellow: Please put a filter over any mature deviations.
:bulletpink: If your work uses stock or resources, please be sure to credit those items with direct links.
:bulletyellow: Your work must be your own. No collaborations. This is NOT a team competition.
:bulletpink: All entries must be received by 11:59 PM PST on 31 August, 2012.

Thanks to the generosity of Moonbeam13 and Community Relations here on deviantART, we have the following prizes to offer:

First place:
One-year subscription to dA
3200 deviantART points
Choice of Fella or Llama plushie

Second place:
6-month subscription to dA
2400 deviantART points
DeviantARTt-shirt or baseball cap

Third place:
3-month subscription to dA
1600 deviantART points
Sticker pack

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:Too long, didn't read? :D :bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

1. Before July 16th, submit no more than two "Before" deviations (deviations for which you've received great feedback) here:…
2. Create a NEW deviation based on the FEEDBACK you received on your "Before" deviation
3. Submit this deviation under Contests > 2012 > Before and After Feedback no later than 11:59 PM PST on August 31st, 2012
4. If you have further questions, please read the blog above, and if you still have questions, note FeedbackFrenzy. :D

Thanks, and good luck! :heart:

That's right ladies and gentlemen :la: Game Development Art and Manga/Anime categories on Deviant Art are joining forces for a Feb to March long Contest! Hosted by :iconpolymune: :iconrydi1689: and :iconnyiana-sama: :love:

It is so appropriately labelled The G.A.M.E (The Gaming Anime Manga Experience) :eager: :eager:

The G.A.M.E Contest Information

Do you have what it takes to finally tell your friends you won "The Game?" :B

Your challenge if you choose to accept it, is to create a Game Screenshot experience! Can be traditional, digital, 3D: as long as it's Original!

that's right! Only original characters, and original settings of your own creation may be entered.

Game Development Art Category, and the Manga and Anime category on Deviant Art are not Fan-art Categories. They are not for your pictures of Zelda, or your pictures of Naruto: they are for your own original characters, your own original settings and any games/manga you collaborated on where you own the rights too. For example: You made lara croft 3D model for the new Tomb Raider game at Square Enix and they've allowed you to post your model up in your portfolio, yes you can post this into Game Development. You created a 3D model for lara croft because you love her, no this goes into Fan-art.

Anime and Manga is the same: they are for your original characters, and original mangas, not your Naruto oc's (Fan-art gets those lovely creations :la: ).

With this contest we are helping to promote that GDA and A/M are original art only categories, and the main rule of this concert is  No Fan-art

The G.A.M.E theme

What does science fiction mean to you? What does fantasy mean to you? Take one of these two, or both genres of art and create for us a Game Screenshot. A Cut Scene, if you will. Show us that sad death scene, show us that epic boss fight scene that comes before actually fighting it, show us that epic ending scene...anything your heart desires as long as it remotely looks like a game screenshot.

There's a catch: The only main restriction besides original art only, is it needs to be done in the Anime/Manga style. Remember though! Anime/Manga features all sorts of different styles and techniques..there is realism anime, semi realism, cell shaded, detailed, you name it! If you are unsure if your style matches anime or not, ask us or browse the anime manga gallery folder for ideas :love:

For example: (These are only examples, do not copy these, use as a reference) - The god of through time by wands96 Fiend + Boy by softmode Lostlegends Warmonger by the-John-Doe Don't Forget Me by yuumei Pewdiecry series: Ep 3 Screenshot by keary Parashi - Ginsenkei Video by nuriko-kun Romantic scene XP by lince Romantic mood by KaranaK I'M GONNA DIE! by meago

The G.A.M.E. genre

Try to give us some details in your artists comments if you can :la: What kind of game is it? An RPG, shooter, racing game etc? Who are these characters we are viewing? etc. No need to give us any plot spoilers if you don't want too ;) But a little bit of background information would be great! :la:

:bulletblue: Must be original work only No fan-art, fan characters set in copyrighted universes, only work you own the rights to. ie: your original characters, your original world, etc. If it's on earth, medieval, space, etc is fine as long as it's a work of fiction. (no using certain existing people, for example.).

:bulletred: Must simulate a game screenshot or a game cut scene of some kind. It doesn't have to "copy" how some games do it, but if you look up game screenshots/cut scenes you can see what I mean. (they have backgrounds, etc. sometimes even gameplay elements like attack, and stuff). Don't submit a full body character on a white background ...this is not a game screenshot or a cut scene.. Unless it's something like

Keeping in mind that it'd have to be your characters not Square Enix's Cloud and Aeris, but just an idea where a white background might work for a game cut scene!

An example of a game screenshot:
An example of a game cut scene:

:bulletgreen: Must use either science fiction or fantasy or both elements in some way.

:bulletpink: Must be in the Anime/Manga style. There are different variations of this style and a lot to choose from, the best definition I could find was "The stereotype of the anime style are characters with proportionally large eyes and hair styles and colors that are very colorful and exotic. The plots range from very immature (kiddy stuff), through teenage level, to mature (violence, content, thick plot)."

:bulletblack: Contest starts today Feb 14th, and goes until March 21st EST time at 11:59 pm. All entries must be submitted to the correct category by then!

:bulletorange: You must submit the art piece to the contest folder labelled "thegame" in order to qualify! Artwork cannot be submitted to the GDA category, or M/A category or any other category. To submit too it directly, you can follow this link:… or browse other contest entries here!…

The category is under Contests->2013-The G.A.M.E if you prefer to search for it yourself, or are having trouble submitting too it.

:bulletred: Artwork only created for this contest will quality! You may use existing characters, stories, games, etc you have created prior to the contest but MUST create a new art piece for this contest and follow the other rules.

:bulletblue: Have fun, be creative, and if you have any questions at all feel free to ask in the comments below or by note to either :iconpolymune: :iconrydi1689: or :iconnyiana-sama: the hosts of the contest! If you do not get a response from one after a few days, try noting another, :)

:bulletgreen:  Fair Exposure and miscategorization

On January 24th, 2012, we released an hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results.  Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic.

Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system.  Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results.  This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.

:bulletgreen:  What we're doing

The engineers who make up deviantART's Search team are well aware of the current issues and concerns regarding Fair Exposure.  They're already hard at work on Fair Exposure algorithm enhancements that will be significantly more robust when it comes to miscategorization (in addition to a number of other upgrades).  Please know that we're constantly working to maintain Fair Exposure's inherently impartial nature.

In the meantime, while those enhancements are still being refined, swift action will be taken against any deviant who is found to be purposely and/or flagrantly manipulating Fair Exposure.  Such action might include a site suspension or ban.

:bulletgreen:  Better browsing, on the way

Fair Exposure is important in order to truly bring to light the depth and breadth of the work submitted to deviantART daily, with an aim to appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes and interests.  It's equally as important that we keep Fair Exposure healthy and functioning appropriately, as to ensure that deviations on display are truly deserving.

Thank you for your feedback and continued patience as we work to build an optimal browsing experience.

What is Movember?

During the month of November each year, Movember asks men across the world to grow a moustache (or Mo') with the aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health issues. Mo Bros are helping to change the face of men’s health by effectively becoming walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by promoting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. Together, we are truly changing the face of men’s health.

How to help
