A subtly redesigned Superman in light of the new 52 and movie costumes.
Overall we're ditching the Spandex. Superman was never meant to wear spandex. Hollywood and TV execs just used spandex because it was cheap and bodyfitting so it stuck. An alien from outer space would use an alien fabric and make it classy, a touch authoritarian and probably protective. That's the fundamental goal in this design, redesign with respect to the creator's ideas.
A big element for me is the shield, which I think should emphasise strong negative space to add to it's alien aesthetic. I want the S to look almost accidental. I think it is something that needs a slightly magical feel to it. I also think instead of Superman wearing the whole costume all the time, it'd be cool if the costume was contained within the shield itself and spread out like quicksilver over his body as he disrobed. This way you never retcon Clark's famous shirt opening to reveal the suit as he transforms.
Why not? His people were capable of interstellar travel, doesn't seem that far-fetched a technology by comparison.
I wanted the suit to seem slightly metallic at a glance. I always thought it'd be cool if Superman wore a suit that was effectively metal, unbendable to any human, but easily bendable to Superman and not restrictive to him in the slightest. I also wanted it to look like it could be the light blue of the original in the right light.
The gold trim is to break up the blue, show a kind of logic to the formation of the suit and to give a vaguely militaristic authority to the suit, along with the collar.
- But Superman isn't authoritarian, I hear you say! No, but he has the authority of representing a whole planet, Krypton, so i figured they'd reflect that in his official garb. -
For the colour scheme I decided I'd darken the blue significantly, allowing the red and especially the yellow to shine more.
I like the collar of Superman 52's costume so I added that, it looks like an alien interpretation of an earthly style of office. Same goes for the cuffs.
The famous Superman briefs are also an issue I see as rarely confidently addressed. Just make them briefs, make them slightly alien, part of the belt feature and commit to them. Maybe it's alien fashion, so they just don't see them as an issue! Like the difference between normal fashion and high fashion. Just make them look like part of it, that's my MO.
So there it is, I'll add a wallpaper of the shield logo on its own soon too.
Superman is property of DC Comics and the Shuster and Siegel estates. This is a piece of fanart.
