Tip of the DayMany times if we don't know how to do something or achieve something we feel it's not doable. Successful people will find a way even if they don't know the answer at first. Sometimes the best way to find the right way is to try as many ways as you can think of. The road to success is paved with failures. Stay positive!Tip of the Day4 years ago in Personal More Like This

A Rant about Abstract Art:Hey there people! Let's gab about abstract art.A Rant about Abstract Art:3 years ago in Personal More Like This
To start, I hate it. I both love it at the same time. That's the nature of that art. Abstract art is meant to evoke an emotion out of you, in a minimalist way or in a complex one, that's the main goal of art in general, is to evoke emotion and responses. And I guess since i'm writing about it despite my loathing nature for the majority of it, I guess it's successful either way. So let me just blab out the main point of this.
Abstract art is often shat out by people who can't fully grasp the concept of their own work themselves. They rely on the general stupidity of the public to crap out an explanation, then they sit there and go: 'Yes. My large, purple square IS the embodiment of pure energy and the personification of the world.' Then people who see it and DON'T get a response, like the majority, rely on this sort of guilty clause to believe what some pompous dingbat shat out, and it continues on that way. WOW! I made a great picture! ON

Zhang Jingna (aka `zemotion) is an internationally renowned photographer and one of deviantART's most popular deviants. She's produced fashion editorials for magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and L'Officiel, and her amazingly beautiful photography deviations rank as some of the most viewed pieces on deviantART. We recently caught up with `zemotion and asked what advice she'd offer fellow deviants and young artists.

Attention all artisans: stop undercharging! As a member of the Artisan Craft community here at DeviantART, I looove to browse around the AC galleries and see what other deviants are up to, what things are trending, and look for up and coming artists to feature in the future. But sadly there's one trend I've been noticing that is very, very bad.Attention all artisans: stop undercharging!3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Undercharging your work!
Let's start off with the most important thing. Now I know some cheap buyers love these low prices, but let's be honest cheap buyers-- you're not long term supporters. People who want your work for super cheap are people who will haggle or snag a deal and run. There is nothing wrong with having sales, getting rid of old charms for cheap, or even doing discounts for special occasions but you can't cater to the cheapskates! xD You want people who appreciate handmade items for what they are. And that's a unique, quality piece.
If someone wants to buy all your hard work for just $5, perhaps you could redirect them to Forever21 to get some mass produced jewelry i
Gesture/pose drawing for beginners!Hey guys!Gesture/pose drawing for beginners!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I got a lot of emails after the last poll about gesture drawing. So I want to recommend one of the best book about it and a few helpful sites.
There are plenty of publications about body drawing. Some are worse than others. But one definitely amazed me! It is Mastering Drawing the Human Figure From Life, Memory, Imagination by Jack Faragasso. Perfectly explains the proportions and shapes. Friendly for beginners and advanced! I often use it. You can buy it online or look for pdf form.
If you want to try a gesture drawing ( wikipedia: typical situations involve an artist drawing a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time, often as little as 30 seconds, or as long as 2 minutes ) - I think there are three useful sites:

Artsy Pet PeevesI'm curious how many of the artist community find the following annoying, when you're just drawing and someone (usually not from an artsy background) comes over to you and they say either or all of the following? Now I know that probably they're just trying to be nice, and sociable (and get a free drawing) and don't know how to relate with someone who draws... but some of these really are annoying (and I'm holding back on the swear words see? 8D )Artsy Pet Peeves4 years ago in Personal More Like This

Today we are looking at the Literature gallery, with our Top Tips.
Before you start
READ the piece all the way through.
Read it again, making notes of what you would like to point out in your critique.
Stay Objective- you are critiquing the piece not the person.
These tips are areas which aren't just necessary in critiquing others' work, but also when self-critiquing your own writing. This is one person's suggestions and I welcome any further tips in addition.
A good opening. The opening to any form of writing doesn't necessarily need to involve a physical explosion, but it needs to have an initial hook; something to entice the reader in. It needs to be clear, something that

The Value of Good WritingWe all typo. The Value of Good Writing4 years ago in Personal More Like This
There are all words we don't know how to spell, or have a habit of spelling incorrectly.
We all create grammatical errors.
These things I accept. I like to think I'm quite a good writer, but I still fall into these mistakes as well. However, I try to keep all my written pieces and correspondences as well-written as possible. Why?
Because when I am confronted with someone elses writing, poorly written, with atrocious spelling, non-existent grammar and dreaded 'txt tlk', I instantly lose the desire to read it.
There - Their - They're
Your - You're
Accept - Except
Things like that also irritate me.
If you've ever written me a message or note in terrible use of English, and haven't received a reply... I'm probably ignoring it.
It's a pet peeve. Whether it's a justified peeve or not, I have no idea, but it's something that has always irritated me. I was part of the generation that didn't have mobile phones as a kid. People first started getting cell phones for personal use (bef
Oh yeah, I did - RANT about Avril Lavigne's songA blog I follow just posted a gif from that song by Avril, called 'Girlfriend'. We all remember this, I believe, it was a big hit.Oh yeah, I did - RANT about Avril Lavigne's song4 years ago in Personal More Like This
But seriously, both song AND video are so absolutely cruel and egocentric that I can do nothing but roll my eyes when ever I see/hear it.
Avril is bitching. That's pretty much it, she's bawwwing about how she wants a dude who - that's right - already has a girlfriend.
She's his girl. He allowed her to be his girl, therefore, gee, I don't know, MAYBE he loves her! Maybe she's a really sweet and kind girl, why else would he date her?
But no, don't you dare to think that, because Avril knows what the girl is really like.
Let's see a few statements she makes during the song.
She's like so whatever
What's that supposed to mean? That she's boring?
Well, at least she's not boasting her ego through 50% of the song, while bitching about Avril in other 50%.
No. the girlfriend is so whatever, while Avril is a motherfucking princess,

On character designYo!On character design3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've had a few people ask me to make tutorials on character design, but I'll be honest:
For me character design isn't entirely an artistic thing. It combines some of my stronger ideals with artistic taste.
This makes it sort of odd to just make "a tutorial" on how to do it, as there's a lot more to it than just the art.
I'll summarise the artistic part in short: Almost any good quality character design tutorial will most likely go into things
like silhouettes, body shape, how to stylize, unique faces/facial features. If you really desperately want information on that
it's out there, google and/or the search tool are your friend.
For me I'll talk exclusively about how I try to design my own characters (mostly in my comics)
from a more philosophic standpoint, rather than just "this is how you do the arts".
I'll divide it by general areas,
This journal's subject shall be:
My characters aren't me.
This isn't as obvious as it sounds, I'm not just talking about the "
Bullying can get you a DD now?Seriously, a deviation where someone in a not so subtle way makes fun ofBullying can get you a DD now?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
and insinuates taking pleasure in the fictional death off an "annoying classmate" titled "Fat Ass" got a DD today.
Now I don't like annoying or obnoxious people as much as the next person, but I'm utterly amazed that a piece of art that:
a. quite clearly uses the weight of a REAL person as a very negative trait.
b. Which insinuates the author taking pleasure in the death of a REAL person.
c. Is apparently shared in real life with his class/teachers and most likely known about by the "annoying person" due to this.
Can actually get a DD and not be seen as complete and utter hate art that verges on extreme types of bullying.
From what the artist said I'd probably hate the girl in question too, whatever, you don't do that shit. It's too personal and focuses on entirely irrelevant traits, simply using personal dislike as an excuse.
If someone's annoying you either ignore them, or tell them honestly their behavour bothe
