You owe it to your members and to the lit community at large to weed out/read the stories and poems you receive. You owe it to your members and the lit community at large to not be just another warehouse storage site for everyone's shitty work. How do you do this? I mean, that would be, like actually taking an active interest in your group. That's hard. I know you have Minecraft and Skyrim to play and every other stupid excuse in the world to not babysit your group -- it's so much easier to auto-accept every piece of scat that comes across your group's inbox! You don't have to do anything!
You are part of the problem why lit quality is so low.
You owe your members more than one asshole who thinks it's alright to submit his horrible fucking angst-ridden emo horseshit to 100+ groups (not an exaggeration). You've s

An Expose-Lit Guide
Why join one?
On deviantART, groups are an amazing resource. As writers we are looking to share our work, get critique, look for inspiration, and even step out of our comfort zone by participating in workshops. Groups are one the best first steps on how to get involved in the Literature Community as they can provide one, or all of these.
Groups also offer something much more than sharing work. They offer you a network of people. People you can interact with, who can help, encourage, and even become your friend. Groups are more than about just showcasing your work or getting feedback, they're about the community.
A Few Quick Tips
If a group has rules, read them.
Some groups have requirements for gallery submissions or joining processes.
Joining a group isn't permanent. You can always leave if you don't like it.
Cancer, You're an arsehole. Update 13/06Cancer, You're an arsehole.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's Friday the 13th and I am going to push my luck to see if any of you lovely people would consider sponsoring me for this? If people want to know whats in it for them besides warm fuzzies, I will accept challenges depending on the amount given etc (previous examples have included making me draw something, write you a poem or even someone donated £200 for me to dress up like superman!). Your support is very much appreciated!
I've not experienced it first hand, but like everyone I know people who have lost loved ones and the pain they've felt. I've seen friends loose mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, grandparents- and even children. Its horrendous and hits too many people. My mother lost her best friend 11 years ago to a long drawn out fight that came back three times before finally winning, another truly inspira
The Bible and its Influence on LiteratureThe Bible and its Influence on Literature3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Hey guys! Let's talk about the Bible!
Now that we have that awkwardness out of the way, whether you believe that the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God or not, Western literature has its roots in the Christian Bible. Thomas C. Foster, author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor says, “Even those who aren't religious or don't live within the Judeo-Christian tradition may work something in from Job or Matthew or the Psalms”. With Western Literature, inspiration can be traced from Shakespeare, Greek, or--what we're focusing on now--the Bible.
The story of the Fall of Man can be seen in a few pieces of literature, especially with “Araby” by James Joyce, a story that focuses on a boy who goes to the Araby to buy something for a girl who can't go herself. The loss of innocence is evident when he overhears a woman and two men flirting with each other, something that challenges the boy's

Why You Should Keep WritingWhy You Should Keep Writing3 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
Q: What do you guys think of my story so far? Should I keep going?
This seems to be a very popular question. I'll argue it's a useless question, and explain why.
This reply is directed at new writers, and despite the tone that may follow, I really do intend to be sincere and helpful. I was once a newbie, too. And although I'm certainly not going to claim to be great, I've fallen flat on my face enough times to learn how to pick myself up and produce something I'm proud of.
Here's why you need to not ask this question. You're either going to succeed, or you're going to fail. But, either way, you'll be better off for having:
2. Figured out how to motivate yourself to continue
3. Completed the entire first run of the story yourself
1 ~ I can speculate that there are plenty of people out there who are afraid of failure. I know first-hand. I'm not a professional writer. I teach mathematics. And it is my job every Fall to convince a hu
Is the United States a Christian nation? It's July 4th and I felt I had to do something special for today. I was thinking to do artwork for about a month before, but wasn't sure how to present it properly. One drawing or several drawings. Maybe a collage. Then I thought a journal entry would be more effective. They seem to get more views anyways. Is the United States a Christian nation?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As I read through U.S. history and it's culture and understand them the past few years, and have been going to Church, I have questioned the U.S. being a Christian nation like most Christians seem to think. That it was founded as one though the founding fathers and that they were Christians, though I have read from some people that most were really Deists. That Thomas Paine didn't approve of Christians and that Thomas Jefferson choose to remove sections of his Bible that told of Jesus divinity. And then there's the Treaty of Tripoli, which has the quote:
"The government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian religion." George Washington.

'Will she tell me, that she love me, too? No. She is a Jedi. They are forbidden to love.' He thought.
She wanted to say something, but she could not speak.
He saw her eyes closing.
"No" he whispered. "It can't end like this."
She stammered something together.
"I...I..."she couldn't end her sentences.
Her breathing was slow, until it completely exposed. He rested his forehead on hers.
"I love you, Ahsoka." He whispered. "I always have."
A tear rolled down his cheek and dripped onto the cheek of Ahsoka.

ArtistleFeatures Vol. IThis is slated to be a series of features written for Artistle on a bi-monthly basis. It will feature works that I have come across here on dA and liked, and also my reasons for liking them. Since I am not a professional or an accomplished amateur, you can be assured that whatever I write is entirely subjective and will quite possibly not have any insightful remark on the technical merits of the work featured.ArtistleFeatures Vol. I3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
because of the curious effect the photographic elements create in combination with its title, 'Stay Forever'. This choice of combination could not have been anything but conscious, and for that cleverness, the artist-photographer is certainly deserving of merit.
Juxtaposed herein one may discern the themes of ephemerality, and a desire to capture and hold on to it that is peculiarly human. And so, we have a bead of water - transient in itself for it must disperse or evaporate - reflecting the

It was brought to my attention that the original 1st paragraph in my journal might be construed as denigrating particular forms and poetic processes. I assure you that was not anywhere close to my intention. I was trying to make a (what in hindsight appears to be somewhat delicate) point that it is not the exposition of a specific creative process that makes the resulting piece of art great (in my opinion), it is primarily the result that matters. In other words, the final "worth" of a piece of art should be judged on its own merit, regardless how it was created. Yeah, I suppose there are exceptions, like historical context, incorporating the process into the artwork itself (e.g. blackout poetry), etc. It's Easter afternoon, so I don't have time to qualify this properly. Suffice it to say that my point is thus: a poem is not special because you used a prompt, used a difficult fixed form,
The Problem With Character SheetsAlright, there are some pretty awesome character sheets out there. I don't personally use them, but I've seen others make them work. I'm not here to dispute the fact that they've got some utility, but I am here to point out one big problem with relying on a list of traits—which is generally how character sheets present these things—to define your character. The Problem With Character Sheets2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
(Note: This also applies to Mary Sue tests. 'Not a Mary Sue' just means your character isn't a perfect storm of coincidence. It has nothing to do with likeability or even believability. <insert dictator here> isn't a Mary Sue, either.)
I think this approach is, if it's the only approach you take to figuring out a character, a really bad idea.
Take a moment to think about your best friend. What's their favorite food? What are they good at, and what are things they do that make you Google good places to dump a body?
Common Arguments regarding Ex-Atheists --Debunked. 1. There is no such thing as an "ex-atheist".Common Arguments regarding Ex-Atheists --Debunked.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
An ex-atheist is an individual who has abandoned the atheistic view of the "absence of belief" in a deity. I am one of them.
2. Ex-atheists were never atheist to begin with.
This is false. Atheism has no ideology or guideline in terms of who is a "true" atheist and who isn't. The closest thing to a "guideline" in terms of anti-religion is regarding "Dawkins Scale" representing the various levels of atheism depending on one's confidence level. But even then, there are flaws in the chart that go against reality terms of theism. To say that another individual was never an atheist before coming to religion after they proclaimed to be so is unruly in itself and only encourages that atheism is more like a religion rather than a freedom of religion. This is said because Christianity and other religions do have a guideline determining how true followers will handle doubt in face of a belief system or the
