Hal Hefner (~i-m-catmonkey) is an innovator. His comic, Gates, is actually Heavy Metal Magazineís first digital comic and even features its own soundtrack (on sale August 9th). Hal sat down with *SusanCoffey to talk about his comic and how persistence pays off.

Brand new piece commissioned by the music artist epsilon-blue. I really enjoyed doing this piece, it's been such a long time since I did an animation that was strictly about animated typography. Originally I had only planned to spend three weeks getting this done in a very straight-forward way, but new ideas kept popping up, and epsilon-blue and I kept refining things, so that it took three months in the end.

Completely designed and animated in After Effects.

Music by epsilon-blue - 'Look What You've Done featuring Dan Weetman'

The fifth episode in my web series, Pencilmation! Two identical drawings are pitted against one another when that wiseguy behind the pencil, scribbles a mustache onto the first character. Facial hair, which has symbolized masculinity since the dawn of time is finally put to the test. Giant hamburgers, fat guys, bikes, and farting—the true ingredients to a good time have finally all come together in Pencilmation #5: To Beard or Not To Beard...Reading is for babies, go watch the cartoon!

Here it is, my final assignment (thesis work?) in Lybecker Institute of Crafts and Design.

This little thing was my life from last December all the way to to the last days of May. I was supposed to upload this month ago, but unfortunately the original file was too big for DA, and I didn't have a film editing program of my own, so you can all thank my friend ~Drazca for letting me use her computer with Adobe After Effects. ^^

Animation, story, narration, voice acting and foaley artistness is by yours truly, the dog barks and growls in fourth scene are free sound effects and the music used was catalogue music, which licence belongs to Lybecker Institute of Craft and Design, and are free to use in projects within Lybecker.

In case you were wondering, the speech is in my mother tongue. That's what Finnish sounds like.

I am now officially diagnosed with animation. Oh, yeah!
