Inner Mongolia / Nei Mongol

Wiki[link]

Inner Mongolia is an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China, located in the north of the country and bordering Mongolia and Russia.

It was established in 1947 out of provinces: Suiyan, Chahar, Rehe, Liaopeh and Hsingan.
It has an area of 1.200.000 sq km and a population of about 24 million.

The official languages are Chinese and Mongolian, the latter written in the traditional Mongolian script, as opposed to the Mongolian Cyrillic
alphabet used in the Mongolian state.

Inner Mongolia has a rich and long history, including Genghiz Khan and short period of independence in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
Now, there is a movement led by the Inner Mongolian People's Party demanding self-rule for the Inner Mongolians.

Given the fact that 80% of the region's population is Han Chinese the prospects for the real autonomy are rather bleak, and independence even less probable.

Tibet

Wiki[link]

Tibet emerged in the 7th century as an unified empire, but it soon divided into a variety of territories which found
themselves under gradually increasing Chinese influences.

In 1951, following a military conflict, Tibet was incorporated into the newly established People's Republic of China
and the previous government was abolished in 1959.

Today, the PRC governs western and central Tibet as the Tibet Autonomous Region while eastern areas are mostly within Sichuan
and Qinghai provinces.

There are tensions regarding Tibet's political status and the Government-in-Exile functions in India under the name of the
Central Tibetan Administration and under the spiritual guidance of the Dalai Lama, the head of the Tibetan Buddhist religion.

This government was one of the founding members of UNPO and its headquarters are located now in Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala, India.

Venice / Venexia / Venezsia / Venezia

Wiki[link]

One of th 20 regions of Italy, had been for more than millennium an independent state, known as the Venetian Republic, until annexed by Italy in 1866, after a brief Austrian and French rule.
Its capital was, and still is, Venice, which ruled for centuries one of the largest and richest maritime republics and trade empires in the world.

Due to this rich cultural legacy, a significant number of Venetians consider themselves to have a unique identity which they refuse to subsume within the notion of "Italian", and the regional government
has gone so far as to officially define its inhabitants as "a People".

This opened the way to a notable nationalist movement and to the election of a "Venetian Nationalist" Luca Zaia (Liga Veneta LegaNord) as president of the Region.
Veneto is among the wealthiest, most developed and industrialized regions of Italy and one of the most visited places in the world, with about 60 million tourists every year.
Besides Italians, most inhabitants also speak Venetian.
Area: 18.399 sq km
Pop : 4.936.197

There are several independist movements active there.

Latgalia / Latgola / Latgale

Wiki[link]

The pagan Latgalian states of Jersika and Atzele were conqueres by the German crusaders and incorporated into Livonia in the late 12th century.
In 16th century Latgalia came under influence of Reformation, in the course of which Catholicism was gradually replaced by Lutheranism.

Yet in 1561 Latgalia became part of Poland, in which the Catholic traditions prevailed.
The population assimilated with the Poles, including the best-known families of German origin (Platers, Borchs, Siebergs).

After the Polish-Swedish war of 1600-1629 Latgalia remained under the Polish rule (Inflanty), but in 1772 it was incorporated into the Russian empire
and following the 1831 Polish uprising, severe repression was directed against everything Polish, Catholic and Latgalian.

Also, the Soviet rule was against the Latgalian regionalism.

Now in the independent Latvia, there are movements to promote autonomy for Latgalia, both cultural and linguistic.
These efforts try to make the Latgalian dialect an official regional language and are centered on the Rezekne University in Daugavpils.

The estimated number of Latgalian speakers is 150.000

Volga Germans / Wolgadeutsche

Wiki[link]

Settled over the centuries at the invatation of the Russian Tsars, the Germans were awarded their own autonomous republic
near Saratov in the Volga river region in 1924.
Stalin suspected them of treason in the face of the Nazi invasion and summarily deported all to Central Asia and Siberia.

The Volga Germans never returned to the Volga region. After the war, many settled in the Ural Mountains, Siberia,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Today there are approximately 600.000 Germans in Russia (1.5 million including people partly of German ancestry)
