Budget Art Tablet ReviewsThis is an outdated journal - but still search engines. I am leaving it because Huion P608n models are still floating around and are a good deal. They have been replaced by the 680s. The 680s has the same specs but I read at another source stating they have improved certain aspects. The HA60 sold by Monoprice and other resellers was extremely successful. A competitor of Huion - Ugee has decided to keep selling this model but with a full 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity. Other reviewers have been busy testing newer higher end models. Ray Frenden is one such person (google). The flood gate has opened since I first posted this. The makers of these alt tablets have realized there is a decent market for them in the west. Huion is becoming well known, and has developed an aggressive tech support group. I can verify how helpful they are. I had trouble getting my P608n to run under Linux Ununtu 12.04. The tech support got back to me with correct info - update hardware drives (an easy semBudget Art Tablet Reviews2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Be a Digital Artist, without Pirating or Starving!Journal Updated: March 2014Be a Digital Artist, without Pirating or Starving!2 years ago in Personal Journal More Like This
It use to be, in ye olden times, it was difficult to break into the digital art field without some serious cash. Everyone insisted you needed Intuo (but you settled for a 4 x5 Graphire) and Photoshop or Painter was the way to go (which you pirated because you didn't have $500+ lying around). Having a computer that could run a resource heavy program like Photoshop was often difficult too (you dealt with it).
That was then, this is now. Breaking into the Digital Art field is a whole lot easier AND cheaper.
First, you don't need expensive computers. Still using Windows XP? Vista? That's OK. Use what you have. (If you're using Windows 98/95 or XP you should seriously consider switching to a free Operating System like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. They're likely to work faster and more securely than either of those operating systems.)
But if you're in the market for a new computer, why bust the bank? For under $600 you can get a decent desktop with a 19" monitor w
Cintiq AlternativeI'm sure we all remember the first time we read about the Wacom Cintiq. A monitor you can draw on... a dream come true. Then you look at the price tag and your heart breaks a bit and your wallet wheezes. The smallest, a 12.1" TFT monitor, is $900. Anything bigger, like the 22" goes for $1,900 and up. For many of us, that's a paycheck, or a couple of months of paychecks. It's not really feasible.Cintiq Alternative2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Of course there are alternatives. It's possible to build something like a Cintiq all on your own. Of course, the risk to doing these kinds of things is that you could screw it up and end up with a broken monitor AND tablet.
So what to do? Give up?
NO says I! Just find another way!
It turns out that there are genuine alternatives to Wacom Cintiq out there. And they don't cost an arm and a leg.

Unrestricted Use DirectoryEDITUnrestricted Use Directory2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Just an update. I may have doubled some up but its near midnight here so Ill sort any doubles tomorrow!
Many years ago, the amazing LawrenceDeDark created the original Unrestricted Stock Directory. A place for artists to come and find a list of stock providers who offer their resources as unrestricted. This is an update on an old list (2009, eep!) <3
Unrestricted stock can be used for both personal and commercial projects, but it cannot be redistributed as stock. You are not required to obtain permission prior to using the stock off site or in DA prints. The only requirements are that the stock provider be notified and credited.
1. You have to give credit.
2. You have to let the provider know.
3. You can not redistribute as a resource
Thats it, Thats as easy as Unrestricted Stock gets.
To be added to the list please NOTE me with either
Unrestricted stock account or unrestricted stock folder as the title please. This makes it easier for me.
Tutorial Treasury 05In the Tutorial Treasury, you will find tutorials geared towards Photomanipulators and some that will deal with a broader subjects, such as lighting, colour etc. The tutorials will be from dA as well as from all over the web and in each episode, there will be 3 to 6 tutorials for your reading pleasure (any more than that I guess no one will have time to read anyway). If you find any good ones, shoot me a note so I can include them in the next installment!Tutorial Treasury 051 year ago in Art Features More Like This

Why Manga Studio?EDIT: A Newer Version of Manga Studio was released December 2012: http://manga.smithmicro.com/mangastudio5/ The new version has many of the same things as the old one, with vast improvements to its coloring functionality (putting it on par with OpenCanvas, SAI, and Painter) and tweaks on the user interface that make it less intimidating for newbies. For illustration, MS5 ("Debut") is best, for comic making, MS5 EX is best. (A hint, wait for sales! They have them all the time on Amazon.com! You can often get MS5 for less than $30 and MS5 EX for under $100!)Why Manga Studio?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The one area MS5 not as good as MS4 is the 3D models. While you can import as before, the ability to have different filters and outlines on 3D models is gone. I recommend getting the EX 4 edition for SUPER CHEAP while it's still on the market if you're looking to ma

What's " Du Printemps à l'Hiver" (From Spring till Winter)?
" Du Printemps à l'Hiver" is our common big project with Alix-Aethusa.
We already made fullcolor sketchbook of 150 pages about it in 2012 a general introduction to the word of Dragons of Season by showing the Four Seasons and their Masters, but also the people who lives in these magical lands.
We also made an Astrology card deck, a Calendar, a comic

Hope you enjoy, and feedback is definitely appreciated! Let me know your thoughts, reactions, some of your own alley stories, as well as if you have any suggestions to add to this tutorial! I definitely haven't thought of everything, so if you had new ideas to share, I'd love to hear them!

PSA on tracing and referencingHello everyone!! I just wanted to reiterate something that I do put on all of my deviations (or at least try to remember to)...PSA on tracing and referencing7 months ago in Personal More Like This
Please do not TRACE, OR HEAVILY REFERENCE MY ART!!! When I say this, it generally applies to using my art as bases or tracing it for adoptables or commissions. I am fine if you trace or reference my art for personal reasons, or practice... but when you use my art for profit , THAT IS NOT OK! Seriously!! I WILL call you out on it if I see it happening, and send you a note or comment on your deviation and request you remove the image, and if you do not comply I will report you.
I feel like this should be common sense, but it has happened to me more than a few times in the past month, and has happened to many other artists as well. Heres my general rule of thumb:
WHEN TRACING AND HEAVILY REFERENCE IS OK:
-Doing it for learning, WITHOUT POSTING IT ONLINE (unless if you have explicit permission from the artist), &crediting

Mission 6 WinnersSo, first off, this has been a while. I’m sorry for that; life’s been especially busy for a few of us judges, what with school starting again for a couple, and tons of other work getting in the way for the rest of us. So it’s a little... late...Mission 6 Winners2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Regardless! We’ve finally looked at every entry and done our best to judge it accordingly. There were a lot of really fantastic entries this time (well, there always are, but even more so this time), which made it incredibly difficult to judge! I know personally I ended up giving out way more perfect scores than I normally give just because the amount of effort displayed in some of these was incredible. So many of you worked so hard back during Mission 6, I was overwhelmed looking over it all. I can only imagine how it must have been to make them! So many hours of work involved!
I also want to point out that, while awards are list

NOTE: THIS DOESNT APPLY TO ALL CUSTOMERS/COMMISSIONERS OF PLUSHIE ARTISTS, just the ones that are rude and try to haggle lower prices continuously and dont respect their work
Ok, I know that a lot of people have had their fair share of rude and frustrating customers, but my sister just dealt with one commissioner tonight that really made me pull my hair out.
After receiving a commission to sew a chibi Manetric (a pokemon for those who dont know, heres a pic of one) the commissioner tried to haggle the price down an extra 10 dollars, to which she agreed to after telling the commissioner she would just have to make it simpler and less detailed. the agreed price was 50 for the commission. The cost of fabric and supplies, 10$, leaving her a measly 40$ for 9 hours of work. thats less than 4 dollars an hour..

Operation: Chameleon SundaeIf you're on this screen, it's for one reason, and one reason only: to thank PK for her tireless work on creating, maintaining, and driving :iconPMD-Explorers:! This is the community's way of thanking her for her herculean efforts.Operation: Chameleon Sundae2 years ago in Personal More Like This
But what IS Operation: Chameleon Sundae?
Simple. Operation: Chameleon Sundae is a digital thank you card, containing the signatures of every group member we can wrangle up and hold down long enough to write one! When all signatures are completed (or much more likely, the deadline is reached) the thank-you card will be finalized and given to PK!
THE DEADLINE IS 12/31, MIDNIGHT, EST. We won't be accepting any signatures past then!
In order to contribute to Operation: Chameleon Sundae, all you have to do is make some sort of digital signature. Sign your name, draw a doodle, write a prophecy in ancient runic script, whatever! Try to limit them within 300x300 size blocks. It isn't a huge deal if you have to go over, but seriously, nothing ridiculously huge. We wa

Artists's Toolbox Project Educate Week: TabletsTablet questions. Anyone who hangs out in the digital art forum or the hardware forums sees these threads constantly, and they pop up other places to. Which tablet should I get? Is it worth it to get a tablet? What's a good starter tablet? This article will cover the basics of drawing tablets: what they are, what they do, if you need one, and which one you should get.Artists's Toolbox Project Educate Week: Tablets1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What is the difference between a drawing tablet and a touchscreen tablet such as an Ipad? Can I draw with both?
To put it simply, a drawing tablet is used solely for art related endeavors, there's no apps or other functions involved. You can't stick a calender and fruit ninja on a drawing tablet. But a touchscreen tablet has tons of different functions and is all touch controlled.
So, can you use a touchscreen tablet for art? Technically, yes. But it can be challenging. Touchscreen tablets aren't as precise and the apps you can get to draw with aren't generally very extensive. This is fine
Ego vs tirednessThe other day a friend told me that he meet an artist he liked in a con in san diego, and he said to me that he was a real douchebag. I replied to him, does he was all day signing to a lot of people at the both?, did he had pain in his back?, do you catch him running like crazy to the bathroom and you wanted to tell him the story of your life? Did you interrupt him talking to a friend he havent seen in 8 years? When you were talking to him the line was big so he interrupt you to give minutes to the person you didnt see at your back? Did he was sick and taking pills at the booth? Did he receive a call that he wont get paid and got mad? Did a close family member died recently and he just wants to be alone and shows no interest in your talking about Dragon Ball?Ego vs tiredness2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Those are the questions people never make, they just say i talked to him, didnt got the reaction i was expecting, soooooo, he must be a douche.
