Mypaint 1.1 : A guide through the new featuresAt the very end of 2012, the code of the famous free and open-source digital-painting program Mypaint 1.1 was released. If you still using Mypaint 1.0 , you might be interested to see what happened into this one year of change. For reading an excellent review about it , please read the very cool and full article wrote by Alexandre Prokoudine on Libre Graphic World , he also made a cool video.Mypaint 1.1 : A guide through the new features2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here I will focus on writing a review for Mypaint 1.0 user, to let them know what changed and how they will benefit from it.
On Canvas Notifications
Now Mypaint is a bit more talkative when you press '+' or '-' on the keyboard to zoom with the 'Control+Space' shortcut. It was difficult back to Mypaint 1.0 days to have an idea of the actual zoom level. For the future development , this box system was made to be reusable ; so Mypaint might have better and better visual feedbacks on the next versions. The notifications are activated by defaults , and concern for the moment only
dA in 10 years?I recently read a forum thread found here: http://forum.deviantart.com/devart/general/131114/ about where everyone thought deviantART would be in 10 years. Many people said we'd have sold out to MSN or AOL. Others said we'd be limiting uploads for non-subscribers and cutting off access to services.dA in 10 years?11 years ago in Personal More Like This
There's two ways to take this I suppose: Either it's a general feeling that this thing is too good to be true in its current form. Or somehow it's expected that a service growing so quickly would somehow be forced to sell out.
Neither is true. This was my response:
I think deviantART will be looked upon as a revolution unto itself. Having been able to scale not only it's infrastructure but it's community and spawned sub-communities (within the garden of deviantART) to include the various arts of hundreds of millions of artists worldwide.
And as the ultimate complement, it will be taken completely for granted. A service fully integrated in to daily li

Black Hills Camping Trip (photos)Ohhhh goodness... where to begin? Back from a rather crazy camping trip. Crazy in ways both good and bad. Decided to spend a weekend in the Black Hills since Chris (INTOtheRFD) had been through a couple long rough weeks of work and wanted some down time. There were also storm chances every day/night, which were very enticing. And ever since Chris and I visited there for the first time in late 2012, we started thinking about moving there. Since Sarah (JupiterLily) is here now, we figured what better opportunity to show her what could possibly be our future home?Black Hills Camping Trip (photos)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Left Friday morning to meet up with Chris, and headed west on I-90 through South Dakota towards Rapid City. Looked like an okay chase day, and stuff was finally starting to fire west of the Black Hills as we reached Kadoka. Headed west and south into the Black Hills, only to watch our storm die before it got to us. This would soon become the theme of the trip Called it a day and shot the sunset at Sylvan Lake.
I'm going mainstream: WATCHERS FEATURE!!!Hi guys (and girls and everybody else)!I'm going mainstream: WATCHERS FEATURE!!!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I basically had nothing to do today, and decided to show all my fabulous watchers how much they mean to me I've reached over 60 now () and figured I'd do what everybody seems to be doing these days: make a feature dedicaded to those amazing people who have shown me sooooo much support!!! You have no idea how much I appreciate it You guys are simply the best (no, I'm not gonna go all Tina Turner on you ) I've gone through every single gallery, and picked my favorite piece of work from each person! Sadly, not all my watchers post work of their own, so they're not here, but they mean just as much to me nevertheless

Deviant and Art MentionsUpdate: In response to feedback received from the community, we have made some changes, which are detailed in the "New" section of this article.Deviant and Art Mentions2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
A new feature has been launched that's designed to make interacting with others even easier than before! Deviant & Art Mentions are a highly requested feature that send notifications to your Message Center when someone mentions you or your work in a public location on site.
How It Works
When another deviant uses the :dev: or :icon: codes to mention you, or includes one of your deviations in a comment or Journal, a message will appear in the new Mentions section of the Message Center letting you know, and linking you to the location.
These messages are designed to help engagement between deviants, as well as to help further conversation on deviantART, making it easier than before to

The Creative Juggernaut that is BenHeine
Undoubtedly one of the most prolific, innovative, and exciting artists
exhibiting their work on deviantART has to be the amazing BenHeine.
In terms of sheer creativity and the true spirit of art as human expression that knows no bounds,
he is currently with few peers. His unique visual creations have been featured in newspapers, magazines
and other publications worldwide and over the last few years his works have begun to populate art galleries
and museums from Brussels and London to Turkey, Romania and South Korea.

Thank you everyone for a sweet 2012!
Cheers and Happy New Year!
"I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something.
So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make new mistakes. make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you're scared of doing, do it.
Make your mistakes, next year and forever."

Tamron 70-300mm - Little Overweight, But BeautifulLatest NewsTamron 70-300mm - Little Overweight, But Beautiful2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So after comparing my options, and even considering ditching getting a new telephoto in favor of a new prime (85mm f/1.8 to be exact), I went out and bought the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Thursday morning. It was my late night at work, and so instead of driving home, then turning around and driving back to Dallas later in the day once I woke up, I just decided to stop in Downtown and shoot some photos with the old telephoto, the Canon 75-300mm, one last time. I figured I could waste two hours shooting photos until the store opened.
I got to the store a bit after they opened, and played around with the Tamron and the Canon 85mm. I must say I was nearly swayed into buying the new prime, since I would have also been able to get my hands on the Black Rapid strap I am after. But I went ahead and got the Tamron.
There is the box

Hope everyone's had a nice Christmas and new year
It's 2012, the year London makes a fool of it's self with the Olympics and then the planet implodes with embarrassment and the world ends Should be a fun year!
So what's everyone's hopes for this year? Both on dA and off.
Personally I'm really looking forward to some of the new features we've got planned for the year ahead
One of them has been snuk into this journal
If there's something new you'd like to see on dA this year what would it be? Drop a comment (even if it has nothing to do with dA) it's been a while since I've posted a proper journal, and it's nice to have a catch up and see how people have been

New Username SymbolsAs part of our ongoing process to make the user experience cleaner and more intuitive, we've launched a new set of username symbols designed to help easily identify deviant-types.New Username Symbols2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
At a glance, the new symbols are quickly recognizable. When hovering over a username symbol, a tooltip appears, providing a brief explanation of that user's deviant-type. If clicked, a modal appears, giving a brief explanation for each username symbol, with "Learn more" links that lead to more detailed explanations.
A word from Heidi:
Over the years, a few things have come to seem like deviantART mainstays. Deviant green, intricate art categorization, colorful avatars, symbols next to usernames. In our constant re-evaluation of what's best for longtime deviants and new users alike, we do sometimes need to stop and ask ourselves if a makeover for some aspect isn't overdue. Changing username symbols was one of the harder things we evaluated.
I've been testin

Species-A-Day Macro Challenge!Alright, so I was out in the garden today and a "challenge" idea came to mind. Here's how it goes:Species-A-Day Macro Challenge!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
1.) Take insect macros every day, and 2.) Post a different species for each day.
Thinking a month would be a fairly challenging period of time, so I'm going to start mine tomorrow (June 10th) and go until July 10th. So you should end up with an album of 30 or so images, all of a different species of insect. The photo that you post for each day MUST have been taken on that day, so no using multiple photos from any single day.
I want to get my macro skills back. I feel like it's been ages since I took a good insect photo, so this will be good practice for shooting in all kinds of conditions since the weather is likely to change. I want to get back that sense of patience that I used to have when it came to macro photography This will also force me to be more active, posting my images here at the end of every day.
Side note, dead insects DO count, but only

DeviantART announced a month ago that through a new organization, Dadotart we applied to manage a new Top Level Domain (TLD) called “.ART.” We are committed to having the .ART TLD — the Internet addresses that could end in .ART — organized and distributed with the full participation of the global art community.
We need your help!
We need your help to show public support for the Dadotart application. The application process to manage a TLD is long, arduous, and intricate. Help us gather as a true art-centric community. And please spread the word to everyone who loves the arts or is part of the arts because we aim to have .ART be home to everyo

Minor New Year old art sale!EDIT: This past week my other half was muscled out of his job by some really underhanded management tactics, which means that my income is now the only thing keeping us going. I'm cutting the prices of these prints and paintings just to get rid of them at this point and maybe pay for the couple of things left outstanding for us when he lost his job.Minor New Year old art sale!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Depending on how things go, I may open up the possibility of commissions too later down the line, but I'll update my journal if I decide to do that.
PLEASE NOTE THAT SHIPPING WILL BE EXTRA - I won't be shipping these myself, so need to confirm shipping costs - they are being shipped from within the US. Please note me if you are interested in any of these pieces, and I will be able to give you a final cost including shipping!
First up I have two original framed paintings, depicting air and water elementals. I'm looking for $50 each or $80 for the pair. They are watercolour on illustration
We Give a F*** How the Site LoadsDevelopers can be angry people sometimes. This is actually quite the understatement and dt is no exception to that assessment. With web development in particular, there are several moments during the day where we are astounded, perplexed, and irritated by why something works the way it does--often over things beyond our control like lack of uniform web standards. Abe Stanway, the creator of Commit Logs from Last Night, actually gives a pretty compelling, and serious, Ignite talk on the functionality of profanity for developers here:We Give a F*** How the Site Loads2 years ago in Personal More Like This
