Talks with Tolkien artists: jgilronanAllow me to introduce you a wonderful professional artist and Tolkien illustrator who joined deviantArt just recently, Joe Gilronan :iconjgilronan: - jgilronan.Talks with Tolkien artists: jgilronan2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
1. Hello! For the beginning, could you tell us something about yourself?
I am a full time professional artist and create work exclusively influenced by the writings of J.R.R Tolkien. I am originally from Chester, England but have lived in sunny Southern Spain for the last 6 years. I have exhibited and sold work world wide and work primarily in oils, acrylic and clay.
2. When did you read Tolkien's books for the first time, and what impression did they leave in you?
I suppose it all started from a very early age when I first
Tolkien birthday toastEach year on 3 January, the Tolkien Society encourages Tolkien fans from across the world to celebrate the Professor’s birthday with a simple toast-drinking ceremony, and we are joining them, as well.Tolkien birthday toast1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
At 9pm your local time, we invite Tolkien fans to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author. The toast is simply:
All you need to do is stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words “The Professor” before taking a sip (or swig, if that’s more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.
Note that we do not condone drinking alcohol if it endangers the health or safety of the drinker or others, or contravenes the law.
Talks with Tolkien artists: breathing2004This is another interview that was rather hard to accomplish. :iconbreathing2004: - breathing2004 is a well known Chinese artist with a clearly recognizeable style, but he does not speak English well, so at first he declined the interview, but then we found a way through translators. My thanks for the translation belongs to Norloth who translated the questions to Chinese, and to fish-in-fridge who translated the answers back to English.Talks with Tolkien artists: breathing20047 months ago in Art Features More Like This

I am an architect and subway building designer. I am also a freelance part-time artist; I usually do cover art for books and journals during my spare time.

Lit. Daily Pick Volume 12: December 2013At the start of the new year, I promised myself that I would be giving back to the literature community here on deviantArt again like I used to. Before I began university, I was able to help admin groups that featured deviants on a daily or weekly basis, and I missed having the time and opportunity to help lesser known deviants have their chance to shine. Now that I've finally graduated, I decided upon a small project that I hope to be able to keep up with: My Lit. Daily Pick Project.Lit. Daily Pick Volume 12: December 20132 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
What is my Lit. Daily Pick Project?
Every day, I choose one literature deviation that I have recently come across that I found to exceptionally stand out to me. That deviation remains featured on my page for 24 hours in my daily pick folder for any watcher or visitor to see and hopefully view, comment, or fave. At the end of the month, all of the deviations that I chose to feature are then featured in an art news journal together. The purpose of this daily feature is to help lesser k

At first, I thought this was a charitable effort, with Blackberry as its corporate sponsor. Under that supposition, I disapproved, and expressed my disapproval, but very mildly. Now, watch me disapprove rather more forcefully (but still quite politely, because I'm repressed, that way):
The Keep Moving Project is NOT a charity, with Blackberry as its corporate sponsor. It's an advertising campaign for Blackberry, from which Neil Gaiman expects to make a small profit, which he will donate to an unspecified cause. So...problems:
1) Contributors don't know what they'd be contributing TO, beyond Blackberry's continued success. Does Neil Gaiman's idea of a worthy cause coincide with yours? Who knows? (There may be somewhere online where one might discover the intended beneficiary, but I couldn't find it

Shared Studio SpacesThis is something I've been thinking a lot about. The fact of the matter is, as much as it's awesome, I don't work my best from home. I want to be able to "go to work" in the morning, see people, do my thing, and then come home. There are too many complications and distractions working from home, and too few opportunities to participate in the world as a human being. And I know of co-working spaces, to be sure there are loads of options in San Francisco, but having visited a bunch of them, there aren't any just right. I've always had a fantasy of starting a shared studio space, a small one, not a big vaulty warehouse style thing, maybe a half-dozen or like 8 people, not necessarily illustrators just self-proclaimed "nerds." I love the idea of coming to work and seeing my (sort-of) co-workers, and then getting to "get down to business" with work that really matters to me. We could have a little kitchenette, andShared Studio Spaces4 years ago in Personal More Like This
dA still alienates gay community with prejudiceSince the beginning of this site, dA has been repeatedly criticized for its homophobic approach to art. Homosexual couples (specifically male-male representations because lesbians are hawt, guys) in particular have been repeatedly targeted by the site's admins for deletion, an occurrence so pervasive that one deviant, reapersun was able to hold an entire contest to attempt to illustrate the line of discrimination.dA still alienates gay community with prejudice6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
You might say, "the site is simply prudish!" Not true. They have an entire section labeled "fetish". Pictures of women having intercourse with tentacle monsters? De rigeur. Buick sized breasts oozing buckets of milk? Fine. But two consenting adults (especially male adults) touching? Kissing? My GOD, what filth!
The newest and most blatant example of dA's skewed treatment of gay people is a new stamp by prosaix
Try reporting it. You can't.
Why? Because tons of people have already tried and dA administrators have marked the case "invalid".

My Thoughts on #GamerGate NowI’m not in favor of it.My Thoughts on #GamerGate Now1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I have desperately been trying to keep an open mind about the movement, but the more I’ve seen of how that movement acts I just can’t in good conscience root for it. I thank all the people who were willing to give me a second chance and send me links to positive things the movement is trying to do... but ultimately the whole genesis of the movement seems to be to harass women OUT of the gaming industry, and the mountain of proof piling up is pretty damn damning.
Like I said in my last journal, I do honestly believe there ARE people in the GG community who DO believe 100% in the goals of the group and who are absolutely LOVELY and WONDERFUL people. But the more I see of how the GG movement was started, how they speak to each other, how they plan to attack and target specific individuals... I kinda feel like those wonderful people are being used, or at the very least duped. And that bothers me a lot.

Randy Queen vs EschergirlsI’ve covered this topic before in a previous journal, but since this is big news now I thought it best to reiterate it: Filing copyright take-down claims for the vast majority of outlets on the internet is frivolous, futile, and usually results in the exact opposite happening of what you intend.Randy Queen vs Eschergirls2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Randy Vs tumblr
Eschergirls, in case you weren't aware, is a hilarious blog where bad female anatomy (and especially the boobs + butt poses women often are contorted into) are put on display to be made fun of, but also for artists to show how simple fixes can completely change a drawing. It's a great website and I strongly recommend you watch their stuff.
For those who don’t know the story, Randy Queen (comic artist and creator of Darkchylde) has filed DMCA take down notices with the tumblr blog eschergirls: http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/ The reason, it seems, is that he didn’t like the idea of people critiquing his questionable anatomy of female characters
Feminism in Comics and Gaming - What Would Happen?I’m genuinely curious. What exactly is it you fear would happen to gaming/comics/geek culture if feminism DID actually have it’s way and take everything over? I’m serious, I am curious as to what exactly about feminism or hell, even humanism, is so “scary” and what people seem to think will happen if they accept it.Feminism in Comics and Gaming - What Would Happen?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I genuinely want to know, so please tell me in the comments below. I won’t block or ban anyone for speaking their mind, and I’d like to urge my fans to NOT argue with, criticize, or demonize any opinions expressed below please. I want honest answers here.
Book Version Thranduil ContestFirst off I want to thank all who participated in the poll I set up: http://fav.me/d6lese6 (the poll is not closed in case you still want to participate). I was positively surprised to see that ALL voters said they read the Hobbit by JRR Tolkien and that we have so many people in the group who have read further works of Tolkien (even the History of Middle Earth)!Book Version Thranduil Contest2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Current results can be viewed here: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/837/uoqc.jpg/
After seeing the results I think we will try a book-only contest for a change .
The topic is simple:
We want to see Thranduil artworks that are based solely on JRR Tolkiens books
That means no Lee Pace styled-Thranduils or Thranduil with any features (clothing, weapons, accessories) from the movies.
Artworks may include any types of visual art like cosplay, sculpturing (would actually be quite cool if someone did that ) and of course both digi

1. Selling yourself as a beginner
I found a prime example of this in a forum for artists seeking work. The thread title was „Starting-out artist looking for a chance",, and the thread told that the artist is „looking for a client for whom I may draw" and has „just graduated from art college".
We all were at this point once, but usually it takes too long to realize that „beginner" is the wrong mindset, even if you are one. Such statements sound like excuses and are guaranteed to weaken your position. Don't make excuses. Do not justify your work, and do not justify your prices. This is a tricky habit to acquire since we're not very confident by nature, but remember the image you wan

In The Shadow of Dragons
"Is the time of daring deeds forgotten, and spent the fire of men? The bravery sheathed, the proud hearts withered? In the scorched trails of our foes’ fury, even wizards’ spells knelt and warriors’ will bent; yet Dawn’s struggle beneath the burning clouds, within the shadow of dragons, has won her the eastern sky. Shall battle drums thunder once more, and mithril–clad soldiers brave again the terrors of the skies?"

Louie Schwartzberg has made it his life’s mission to use his cinematic artistry to raise the alarm for public awareness of the dire situation we are facing in the possible collapse of our taken-for-granted natural resources. The “colony collapse disorder” currently decimating our honeybees was the prompt for Louie’s new movie, Wings of Life, which at it's essence, is a love story that feeds the earth.

And I don't know which is worse: his misogyny, or the pseudo-intellectualism he uses to defend it. Take for instance the faulty reasoning he uses to explain why women shouldn't have the same rights as menecause women are collectively more short-sighted and more self-centered than men, giving them an equal voice in society is tantamount to a slow-motion execution for any society. This is not theoretical, it is observable, as the equalitarian societies of Europe are already demographically in demise and in the process of losing their democracies and their property rights.
I understand that many people believe women's rights ar

1) Under extreme pressure of Survival, a group of rough men found an Empire
2) The Empire becomes successful, life becomes easier and the pressure for Survival diminishes
3) The descendants of the founders become weak of both will and body. Feelings take over Logic, Appearances take over Substance. The descendants self-deprecate their own culture and take interest in exotic religions and believes
4) The Anti-Culture Revolution: The descendants of the founders start to adopt ideologies and policies that affect their own Empire and Culture in a negative way, but can be implemented without much resistance because of the relative prosperity already reached
5) The Collapse: Eventually the weight of the negative policies is too much for Society to sustain, and it collapses
6) Dark Age: Extremely Selective Pressure for Survival starts the cycle all over
