To anyone looking in, I seem as if I have everything . . . but I do not.
I've never had a friend.
I've had respect, I've had servants and gifts and everything I could ever want, but I lack a single true friendship.
As a child, I played on my own. I understood that I should avoid getting too close to servants and commoners. As I grew, I became too preoccupied with my duties as the future king of Camelot to even think of friendship, though of course nothing would have changed had I not.
Yes, Morgana and I were raised together, and yes, I suppose she could be considered my friend. But we've never really stepped in sync, always at odds with each other, never quite at peace. And besides, she was a girl.
And my father . . . he was to be obeyed, loved, respected, even revered, but he wasn't a friend to me. Not in that sense. He was always too busy with running the kingdom and sentencing
Attempted ConfessionMerlin paced slowly, fidgeting with the long sleeve of his thin blue shirt. Merlin's pacing took him to the window and he looked out over the castle courtyard. He closed his eyes and leant his forehead against the cool glass. He hoped, so much, that what he was about to do was the right thing, as the weight of the kingdom's future rested heavily on his shoulders. It was a weight that was slowly crushing him and that was why he had to do this.
The door eventually opening made Merlin jump and spin around. Arthur didn't comment on Merlin's panicked behaviour and instead just raised an eyebrow before looking away to place his sword and large coat on the neat and tidy bed and to kick off his boots. Arthur soon noticed the large meal that was laid out on the large wooden table. His eyebrow arched even further an

"Arthur? Why do we have to leave so early?" Merlin complained, trailing after the Prince down the stone corridors, away from the great hall, in which a grand ball was taking place. The music was loud and followed them from the hall and down the corridor as they walked.
"Because I'm tired. So I excused myself and am going to bed."
"But you had loads of girls left to dance with! It's only halfway through the ball now!" Merlin wanted to stay, and though it had torn at his heart to watch the Prince dance with all those women, he would try anything to get to go back. The grand hall had been decorated beautifully with reds and golds and it was such a magical atmosphere, which was ironic in a castle where magic was banned.
"But I'm tired, so I left." Arthur argued.
"I'm surprised you wanted to leave all those girls that you were flirting with." Merlin attempted to hide

Arthur was unsurprised when he heard a very loud crash coming from the doorway of his chambers. It was a noise he was accustomed to now. He heard the crash but did not bother to look up from the papers he was reading through. He knew who it was.
"What have you done this time Merlin?"
Arthur glanced over the top of the papers with his best 'I'm so not convinced' Gaius-like raised eyebrow.
Merlin was kneeling on the floor picking up the remains of a plate, with what was previously Arthur's
dinner scattered all around him on the floor.
Arthur sighed, slammed down the papers on the table and then walked towards Merlin, until he was towering over his manservant. Arthur put his hands on his hips, looking down at Merlin as he jeered.
"There once was a man called Merlin,
who was incredibly slow at learning,
how to be a good servant,
as he was so unobservant,
he tripped through the door
and dropped my meal on the floor."

"No," he says, interrupting me, "it makes sense. You and I, we're not we just can't. But you and Gwaine, that's actually possible."
"I mean, he comes and goes with the breeze," Arthur continues, "that's the perfect situation for a relationship between two men. If you get found out, you just go where the wind takes you. Somewhere new. You wouldn't be tied down, living a lie. He's better for you."
"And he's a good man," Arthur interrupts me again, he won't let me get a word in edgewise! "A handsome man. He would treat you well. Very well."
"Are you finished selling Gwaine to me?" I finally ask.
"There's one big problem with Gwaine," I say.
"What's that?" Arthur asks, "he's too perfect for you?"
"He's not you."
"You're right!" Arthur protests, "He's better."
I can't help but laugh. "You're selling yourself short. I don't want to travel with the win

Arthur looked ridiculous. Ever since Uther had given him a speech about courting ladies, he'd decided it was a good idea to court Merlin. I tried to explain to him that he and Merlin were quite far into their relationship, and that courting was unnecessary, but he remained undeterred. He said that Merlin deserved the same treatment he would have given anyone else.
As strange an idea as it was, he had a point. So I did nothing and I watched him climb up the wall to Merlin's window, flower in his mouth, like I'd seen him do ages ago for Lady Vivian, and the only thing I could do was shake my head with a fond sigh.

Hunith's soft hands covered her son's eyes.
"Merlin, are you ready to see our new home?"
Four year old Merlin nodded as best he could without dislodging Hunith's hands and ruining the surprise.
"Ok then, in three, two, one..." And then Hunith's hands were gone.
And Merlin could see their new house.
"It's called Ealdor cottage." Hunith smiled.
Hunith had been saving up so that they could move out of their dingy flat since Merlin was born. Their new home was a little cottage, with six rooms and a small fenced garden round the front, facing the road. The thing that caught young Merlin's attention most though, was the little red window that was at the front of the house. All the other windows had white painted frames, whilst just one, the furthest right window had a red painted frame that looked out over the front garden and road.
Merlin took his mother's hand and pulled her

"But not all Magic is bad." said Merlin
"It's neither good nor bad, it's how you use it." Gaius replied, tired of the argument.
Suddenly the door flew open, and Prince Arthur and his men had suddenly filled the room.
"Over there." Arthur pointed. "Sorry Gaius, we're searching every room in town."
"What for?" Gaius was a little annoyed.
"The sorcerer." Arthur replied.
"Why would he be here?"
"I'm just doing my job."
"Well we've got nothing to hide, go on then, search." Gaius gave Merlin a worried look.
The knights picked up books and papers and opened draws.
"All these books and papers?" asked Arthur.
"My life's work, dedicated to the understanding of science. You are quite welcome to read through them if you wish."
Arthur turned his face. No thank you. "What's this room up here?" he asked.
"Ehh...it's mine." said Merlin.
"And what do you expect to find in there?" asked Gaius.

I have a secret.
A deep, dark secret, one that I've kept hidden inside me for as long as I can remember. It was the first thing I remember consciously thinking, and I know that someday it will be the last.
A secret that I've never been able to tell anyone, not a soul, because doing so would mean that I would have to admit it to myself first. And I'm not willing to do that.
I draw my sword and fight, but not because I'm protecting my people, not because I'd gladly give my life for them.
The only reason I fight is because I don't want to die.
But I am their prince. Prince Arthur of Camelot. So kind, so wonderful, so handsome, so brave. As a prince, I've committed my life to my country and all who live there. I

"What?" I demanded. "Why not? That's a stupid rule."
She shrugged. "That's the rule."
"Well I don't want it to be the rule."
She smiled fondly and ruffled my hair. "Sometimes we can't change the rules we don't like. We just have to follow them and do the best we can."
And that was that.
The day I turned six, I made a wish. I still wanted to grow up faster. I was careful not to tell anyone what I'd wished for this time. But my wish still didn't come true.
"May, why didn't my wish come true?" I asked my sister as we were eating the cake later.
"Sometimes it takes time," she told me. "Wishes can be hard to grant, you know."
I frowned. "But what if I want my wish granted now?"
"You'll have to be patient."

I remember our first kiss like it was only minutes ago. It was the first time I ever felt so wonderful, so vulnerable. We'd been fighting. I don't remember what about, it hardly matters now. He was angry with me, I'm sure it was due to my princely selfishness in some way, and he stormed from the castle out into the rain.
I loved him, even then, and I couldn't stand to see him so hurt. So, I did the only thing I could think of. I chased after him.
"You are so selfish, and arrogant!" he hissed, when he discovered that I had been following, "You can't even let me walk away from you! You have to follow me and prove something!"
I stopped. "You're right," I said, "I'm sorry. I- I'll leave you."
As I turned to go, I felt his hand on my arm.
"You surprise me every day, Arthur Pendragon," he said, stopping me, "I never expected you to apologize."
We were so close. So close, but I could barely hear him because my heart was flapping in my chest and dru

Merlin opened his eyes slowly, blinking against candlelight and finding himself tangled up in sheets that he'd pushed down to his hips, his loose shirt the only cover for his chest.
He held up a hand against the sudden light, to look up at Arthur. Arthur was standing silently at Merlin's bedside, the lit candle clutched in a white-knuckled grip. The Prince's blonde hair was ruffled and sticking out at angles, like he'd been pulling at it in his sleep and he had haunted, dark circles under his eyes, that appeared even more shadowed in the candlelight.
"Arthur?" Merlin questioned, his voice sleep-rough and tired.
