It was a good day for the dogs and a bad one for the rabbits. I heard the big black dog howl his chase call through most of the afternoon, sometimes near and sometimes far. His little white shadow yipped along behind him. There were long pauses between yips heard. That little dog had short legs and needed extra wind and effort just to keep up.
The air outside was cool and sharp. The dogs ran under the last autumn leaves I could spot out there, out past the meadow. Some of those old trees in the grove stayed green the whole winter long. Most never did. The hunt through the big grove must have been exciting for the dogs. Not for smaller and younger animals.
The dogs came back when the setting sun put sof
The Convenience of EqualityThe Convenience of Equality2 years ago in Philosophical More Like This
The topic of marriage is no stranger to Americans in recent weeks. The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 split decision, ruled that DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act) was unconstitutional because it failed to offer homosexuals “equal protection under the law” and that the purpose of DOMA is to “humiliate” and “injure” homosexuals who seek marriage.
No doubt a number of individuals celebrated the ruling, happy, perhaps, to see the archaic edifice of ‘traditional’ marriage burn and establish a sleek and modern “marriage” in its place. Many rejoiced at the new building, but many of us looked on and asked to see the building plans.
Arguments for “marriage equality” are many times the product of convenient reasoning. The typical strain of equality reasoning usually goes along the lines of this: We can’t expect everyone to go by one definition of marriage, nor should the government force one view over the other. Moreover, th

The next few weeks seem to slow to crawl. Severus soon found himself both dreading, and eagerly anticipating Thursday afternoons and the first year students that would stare silently up at him for two hours.
The Potter boy caused him particular distress. He absolutely hated looking into those green eyes, but nothing gave him more pleasure than to torment the son and spitting image of his childhood enemy.
His only respite from the turmoil that threatened to consume him, he found in his sixth year students. Particularly a bright, Slytherin girl named Ingrid Eastchurch.
She was a relatively thin girl with icy blue eyes, and short, white hair. Because she was a Slytherin, Snape was already predisposed to prefer her to his other N.E.W.T. students, but she really did possess an incredible talent for potion-making a talent that he hadn't seen since his own days at school.
As it was Halloween, classes had been released early, and most of the school was preparing to

A little angel got her wings.
Leaving behind her family
And all her earthly things.
Everyone was crying
As soon as they heard the news.
She had a fight with cancer.
But no, she didn't lose.
She remained so strong and brave.
So confident, without a doubt.
She was such a beautiful girl
On the inside and the out.
But she was more than her beauty,
She had so much to say.
She never let anything bother her,
No matter what life threw her way.
She had so many dreams,
And such little time to fulfill.
She so strongly believed in hope,
Faith, peace, and good will.
She touched every heart she met,
With her laugh and with her smile.
We all adored her humor
And her funny, silly style.
But Talia was a shooting star.
Come and gone so soon,
But such a beautiful sight
As she soared across the moon.
Her motto was to "Just Keep Swimming."
Because she was as persistent as can be.
But she traded her fins for wings,
And she is now flying free.

In the time of Jesus, a Jew could only seek forgiveness for his sins in the temple. The Jews considered the temple the center of God's kingdom and the borders of Israel the dwelling place of God. Jesus, when he proclaimed “Destroy this temple and I will raise it in three days” was speaking of himself. He replaced the temple of Jerusalem with himself. It is through Jesus that we are forgiven our sins and it is to Him all people should gather.
Truly, God's love is great because he gave the Jews a temple and a place to heal from their sins. His love is even greater because where many would not or could not go to the temple for healing, Jesus, the new Temple, came to them.
Jesus sends us forth, out of love, for those who do not know him. By our words and actions in this world we extend

[For your benefit I have included the Gospel passage (Jn 6:16-21) below so you can place your mind in the proper place before reading this reflection]
When it was evening, the disciples of Jesus went down to the sea, embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid. But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.
The Gospel writers were fond of relating 'on/by the water' scenes to their readers. Many significant events happen by the seashore: some of the Apostles are called, Jesus teaches great crowds, and he encounters the Apostles after the Resurrection.
In this instance—Jesus walking on water

My hands can't be turning blue. Not already. It's just a trick of the water. Just a trick.
Sarah kept repeating this to herself, trying to kick herself to the surface. Each dull movement was weak and strained, hardly enough to keep herself from sinking faster.
No! No, no, no, NO!
She struggled again, pushing her dull frozen limbs to their limit and beyond. "PLEASE!" Water rushed into her lungs again; cold, sharp, and painful.
Please… Someone… Anyone... Help me, I don't want to die. Not like this. Not now.
She couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. The cold was surrounding her on every side. Her lungs had devoid themselves of what little oxygen they had left. The hypothermia had set in, and Sarah could no longer kee

Severus stood very still as Dumbledore walked past him, out the door, and down the revolving staircase to the griffin three floors below.
Snape was alone in Dumbledore's office.
He glared around at the many shiny, and very delicate instruments that lay on the small, rickety tables, and shelves all around the room. His eyes had just passed over the dilluminator, and an old snitch, when they fell upon a gold ring with a small black stone cut in a diamond shape. There was a triangle, and circle, and line set into the top of the stone. He caught his breath.
It had been years since he had heard his mother's sweet voice telling him the ancient tales, but he could still recite them by heart. There sat the Resurrection Stone of Cadmus Peverell.
He took a step closer, and reached out to touch it. After the slightest hesitation, he lifted it from its resting place on the table and held it in his hand. He tilted it closer to the light, and noticed a very fine crack cut diagonally on the face of t

A few weeks had passed
You and Tom had been hanging out quite often for the past few weeks, he even considered you and him to be ’good friends’. You sat in your hotel room reading a book, you heard your phone vibrate, you put your book down and picked up your phone.
Apparently you had a text from Tom; you looked at the text message and smiled.
Would you like to go out for dinner maybe? My treat? There’s a wonderful restaurant I know, they have lovely food, I’m sure you’d like it darling.
Sure, I’d love to Thomas, you replied back with a smiley emoticon, you got up and got dressed fixing your hair.
Moments later you got a text from him saying he was downstairs and outside the hotel in his car waiting for you.
You rushed out of the hotel and saw Tom leaning against his Mini Cooper.
Tom opened the passenger seat door for you and smiled, “Ready to go?”
