Character Feature: Shyla ShepardThe seemingly indomitable Shyla Shepard has lived a harsh and tragic past. After losing her family at sixteen to a bloody Batarian pirate attack on an Alliance colony, the young fighter joined the Alliance military only to lose her entire squad in a deadly thresher maw attack. In the years since, these early scars have forged a new identity out of the shattered ruins of the child whose family died on Mindoir. Known for her “tough but fair” approach, Shepard’s fight against the geth incursion broke new grounds for humanity when she became the first human Spectre on the galactic Council’s elite forces. But recent rumors have put in question Shepard’s loyalty to the Alliance forces. Our investigator setup an exclusive interview to delve into the truth behind the legend.Character Feature: Shyla Shepard3 years ago in Personal More Like This

The right way to end a storyI'd like to share a few paragraphs from a great book about writing fiction by Nancy Kress, called "Beginnings, Middles and Ends". Boring title, but a very useful book that every aspiring writer should have on their reference shelf. The right way to end a story2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The following passage is from the chapter "Satisfying Endings: Delivering on the Promise". Please note that Nancy expounds at length that not all endings need to be happy, and indeed, many shouldn't be in order to be effective. I was not at all upset that there was no "happy" ending with the new ME3 DLC. The issues were more fundamental, with the way they developed the story arc and in the end, betrayed several of them, mostly in delivery. But the problems weren't unsalvageable to begin with.
"To succeed, a climax must do four things:
" 1. The climax must satisfy the view of life implied in your story."
Nancy mentioned before this about making a promise with your story, that t

Beyond the Extended Cut... I will reignite. And so the end creeped upon us. With the Extended Cut behind me I can finally say that I've seen the full extent of how BioWare wanted to end the Mass Effect trilogy... And I disliked it. Don't get me wrong, the Extended Cut is a vast improvement over the vanilla endings and I think that everyone should check it out - but it is still the same unfitting ending, it is still something taken out from another story and sewn onto Mass Effect's glistening skin, with it still kicking and screaming (yes, this is just a personal opinion and no, I am not bitter about that - I just dislike how it ended). The themes that made Mass Effect so great are still either nowhere to be found, or twisted around to present a vision I just cannot accept as something that belongs there. My fanface is itching, my writer sense tingling... Not the way I want to end one of the greatest sci-fi experiences of my nerdy little life.Beyond the Extended Cut... There will be no extended cuts to the Extended Cut. Either you love the current finale,
What's in YOUR Shepard's bathroom?I found this prompt in one of my writing reference books. Basically, in order to get to know a character better, you go into their bathroom and nose through their stuff. SO, here's what you can find in Dakota's:What's in YOUR Shepard's bathroom?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
pumpkin scented shower-gel
mint green mini-rubber ducky that sits on her sink
lavender bar-soap by sink
pastel green toothbrush
pale pink strawberry flavored lip-gloss
eye drops for tired, over-worked eyes
oversized lavender bath towel
pastel green bathrobe
autumn-scented moisturizing cream
pile of laundry
lavender terrycloth bath mat
The ducky was a joke from one of her ME2 squaddies, not sure who, not sure why. Also-bet you can't ever guess what her favorite color is...
And the EA servers are trolling again.
Thoughts on the ME3 Ending DLC *SPOILER-FILLED*Yesterday I downloaded and played through the ending DLC. While I could only offer a few flailing and inarticulate meeps of protest to my boyfriend after finishing it, a day of gathering my thoughts and seeing other people's reactions on various forums has allowed me to put them down in words.Thoughts on the ME3 Ending DLC *SPOILER-FILLED*3 years ago in Personal More Like This
It was in response to someone on the Bioware forums posting a link to a Youtube video of the Renegade control ending (which I hadn't seen before) that this outpouring finally erupted, so please view the beginning in that light.
*shivers* I already thought control was creepy. Even as a paragon, I can't help but see Shepard as, in tens of thousands of years, becoming essentially the next starchild. There's enough humanity left in her to go mad with that kind of power, that immortality. Paragon or renegade, you're still setting your Shepard up not as a figure of hope and cooperation, or of strength and leadership, but as a hopefully benevolent god with cont
Art Books/ResourcesBecause I have a surprising numer of people asking about this (and since I deleted the original post), here are the books I would recommend the most for those studying art. I understand that books are expensive (they take the place of me not being able to take art classes/go to art school), so remember that the best way to learn is to practice from what you see around you!Art Books/Resources3 years ago in Personal More Like This
With that said, these are the ones I have personally used and either live by or would heavily suggest:

"You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes." Doesn't this sound oddly familiar?
By picking the blue or green options in Mass Effect 3, you basically agreed to give up, stop fighting and just die. Picking the red beam means your still fighting, struggling against the Reapers, not going to just lay there and die like they want you to. Live to fight another day..

How To Sell Your Original PaintingsHow To Sell Your Original PaintingsHow To Sell Your Original Paintings1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
In this article I will be discussing how to sell your original paintings. If your a artist you know how intimidating this can be when you've decided to venture into sales. It may even leave you with doubts about your own work, lower your confidence as a artist, and a bit fearful. Well have no fear! I have some tips from personal experience, as well as online references and advice from fellow artists that will help with your sales.
The First Step
Before we get into 'the meat' of things your very first step is Believe in yourself. Be confident about the accomplishments you've made. If your contemplating selling anything then you have to know you're good at what you do. Let that be your mantra as an artist. Understand that how you've acquired your skills, what you choose to paint, what your art looks like, and how
What Future Brings - the Beacon of Hope. This has been a wild, wild week for me. Never before have I juggled so many things at one time, between work, private life and the stuff I will write about in a second. First things first, let me get the single most anticipated question out of the way, so as not to keep you in further suspense - the next episode of "Marauder Shields" will be up on Wednesday, 16th of May, which basically means that I am skipping a single episode this week. Believe me, the decision didn't come easy, but it was either that or turning in a half-done, cut-up episode, which wouldn't do Zaeed any justice, nor would it present Emily Wong's legacy in the light it deserves. But let's not get even further into spoilerish territory right now. What Future Brings - the Beacon of Hope.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
For the past week I've been busy like a bee, flying around frantically, organizing bits of stuff I know extremely well and large pockets of stuff I've never even touched before... But knowing that it will be worth it in the end. Allow me to wear my Renegade face for the rest

As I said, and to avoid copyright issues, we must skip all Bioware copyrighted material. That means the characters will keep their names, but I'm not going to use their surnames. While the human ones (Cousland, Amell and Hawke) are actual surnames in real life and thus, Bioware can't have rights on them, I'm not sure about the non-human ones (Tabris, Mahariel, Surana, Brosca or Aeducan), so we will stick to the names and the drawing of the characters, all of whom you know well .
Also, any other Dragon Age videogame related things like armors, crests, symbos, places

4. Please don't use my knitting yarn as dental floss. I sent to Palaven for a new supply for you. It will be here in a few days.

Also, the Orbital Bombardment Designator has made another appearance.
Aside from the whole "female Shepard" thing, this trailer is really showcasing the increased cinematic quality in ME3. Like the Uncharted games, to name an example.

Stop ACTA ! [Edit : VICTORY !]"Dear all,Stop ACTA ! [Edit : VICTORY !]3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I am delighted to be able to inform you that ACTA has just been defeated in the plenary session of the European Parliament by 478 votes to 39, with 165 abstentions. Which represents the biggest defeat of a legislative proposal from the Commission ever.
An earlier attempt by the pro-ACTA MEPs to postpone the vote was defeated.
This is an excellent result which is a testament to the very impressive campaign of people power against ACTA which saw millions sign petitions, thousands taking to the streets and contacting their MEPs.
The Commission has indicated that it will continue with their case in the European Court of Justice and will most likely attempt to get Parliament's consent on a modified version of ACTA in the future. So we need to keep up the campaign.
Anti-SOPA campaign has been pretty violent (and effective !) but it is no time to give up !!
ACTA is on its way, and it is NOT a European-only version of SOPA ! Any country in the world
