Tolkien birthday toastEach year on 3 January, the Tolkien Society encourages Tolkien fans from across the world to celebrate the Professor’s birthday with a simple toast-drinking ceremony, and we are joining them, as well.Tolkien birthday toast1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
At 9pm your local time, we invite Tolkien fans to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author. The toast is simply:
All you need to do is stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words “The Professor” before taking a sip (or swig, if that’s more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.
Note that we do not condone drinking alcohol if it endangers the health or safety of the drinker or others, or contravenes the law.
I LARP. I Like it. Shut up.There are two sentences I hear a lot about LARP.I LARP. I Like it. Shut up.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
„It's fucking childish." or „You need to grow up and be an adult."
For starters: I'm a realist. I know most people are close-minded, stupid and bitter, fixed on common notion of „normality." They just don't know better, in most cases it's not their fault and I don't think It'll ever get better.
People are tolerant these days – but not because they understand the specific problem. They are tolerant of some things, because they're told to be tolerant to these things, not because of a result of their own critical thinking.
But I sort of feel an urge to speak about why I do what I do, and why the sentences above are deeply wrong.
It's not the internet trolling, what bothers me, I write this mostly because I'm getting married after three awesome years of relationship, and yet some people close to me think I'm not mature enough for this just because I'm a larper.
(I hope my english is good enough to make my point.)
Fantasies are simply not onl
YaoiWorld | KodamaCreative Commissions OPENI would like to announce that the 2014-2015 commissions season is officially open!YaoiWorld | KodamaCreative Commissions OPEN2 years ago in Personal More Like This
My name is Kodama. I am 24 years old and I love art.
From years of experience, I’ve managed to satisfy over a hundred customers and finished more than hundred drawings for private clients and small commercial projects alike. Together we can make your ideas come true.
I am a multimedia illustrator hailing from Poland in Europe. I have been involved in artwork, concepts and graphic projects for over 10 years. Working both private commissions and taking part in bigger projects, I can say without a doubt, it has been (and still is!) an exhilarating journey. Art, especially the visual medium, is what stimulates and motivates me as I continuously strive to improve myself.
For every piece of work I create, I pour a little bit of myself into it. It does not matter whether it is a single private order or part of a larger work; I always aim for my work to be unique.

I decided to keep a travel diary for them, so you all know where they are in the moment Those who already had them, PLEASE upload your photos, so I can add them here! It can be in your scraps if you don't want to spam your main gallery, but we would all like to see the awesome locations where the Noldor have been, right, family? Remember that you can still take photos of your figure when you go somewhere interesting, even if you already sent the others further!

Creating Fantasy Maps for Your Fantasy NovelCreating Fantasy Maps for Your Fantasy Novel1 year ago in Personal More Like This
This week, I’ve been getting closer to finishing the editing on my novel, and as a consequence got rather excited about the idea of publishing it. So I naturally started thinking about layout, and the possibility of including a map.
If you’re anything like me, when you’re writing about fantasy places, you’ll find it’s really useful to draw out the key locations on paper. Then come several hours of asking yourself questions that sound like maths homework from hell: e.g. ‘how long does it take for a man with one eye to ride three hundred miles over mountainous terrain?'; or’ how long does it take a coracle to navigate six miles of shark-infested coastline?’.
When you’ve put in the requisite time to work these things out, and drawn yourself several scribbly, hand-written maps, you might find -as I did – it’s time to create some real maps. You
Art theft is not a crime - say NO to copyrightToday, a DD was awarded to a nice acrylic painting (below left) which was painted from my photo (below right) -Art theft is not a crime - say NO to copyright3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Just about the only thing I don't like about is the strong cyan tint, which seems to be more associated with the photo of the painting rather than then painting itself. Overall it's definitely one of the best derivative works I've yet to see based on my photos. I really enjoyed exploring how all the little details differed between the two.
Rpriet1 did not ask for my permission, or inform me of using my photo. A DA gallery moderator just messaged to ask whether I would like the deviation removed, and the DD revoked. I think most artists who've had their work "stolen" would be outraged, but for me the answer was a very unambiguous no. This is a complicated issue, and I think that the vast majority of the readers will disagree with me at this point, so let me explain my position carefully.
The concept of intellectual property, the way it ex

1. Hello! For the beginning, could you tell us something about yourself?
I am a full time professional artist and create work exclusively influenced by the writings of J.R.R Tolkien. I am originally from Chester, England but have lived in sunny Southern Spain for the last 6 years. I have exhibited and sold work world wide and work primarily in oils, acrylic and clay.
2. When did you read Tolkien's books for the first time, and what impression did they leave in you?
I suppose it all started from a very early age when I first
Talks with Tolkien artists: breathing2004This is another interview that was rather hard to accomplish. :iconbreathing2004: - breathing2004 is a well known Chinese artist with a clearly recognizeable style, but he does not speak English well, so at first he declined the interview, but then we found a way through translators. My thanks for the translation belongs to Norloth who translated the questions to Chinese, and to fish-in-fridge who translated the answers back to English.Talks with Tolkien artists: breathing20047 months ago in Art Features More Like This

Women ArtistsThe other day, I attempted to put together a huge list of some professional and semi-pro women artists over on my tumblr, because it seems like too often women get overlooked when it comes to being honored and recognized. This year, I was incredibly honored to be nominated for a Hugo award in the Best Professional Artist category, but I was a little shocked to find out there hadn’t been another woman nominated in that category since Rowena Morrill in 1986. That’s more than a little ridiculous, considering there are so many women artists out there who are all amazing, who offer unique points of view and design solutions, and who need more visibility and recognition. While putting this list together, I was really excited to find tons of new artists I'd never heard of before.Women Artists2 years ago in Personal More Like This

About Project Porkchop
The DeviantArt Experience can sometimes quickly become the quintessential example of that most frustrating problem: too much of a good thing. Astralseed, an Icelandic deviant artist with a penchant for equines, including Quirlicorns (a breed of unicorns), has made our busy lives so much easier with ProjectPorkchop, a feature she started on her DeviantArt page. THREE TIPS FOR DRAWING CARSYou know that green ellipse tool that you bought in art school? Do you know how to use it for something other than oval shapes? Do you know what those "cross-hair" marks are for? And do you know how to use it for technically correct perspective drawings?THREE TIPS FOR DRAWING CARS3 years ago in Personal More Like This
TOO many comics artists don't, and it's driving me crazy. So instead of starting a blog that starts showing examples and naming names, I figured it was better to make a quick tutorial. And this isn't just for cars but also for guns, fire hydrants, and millions of other machined objects found in comics.
If you go through this and you're still stuck, please don't write to me. I'm happy to show you at a convention to make it clearer, but within a blog this is the best I can do. Check out "Perspective for Comic Artists by David Chelsea" for more.
Cars are a whole lot easier to draw if you know how to properly use perspective and ellipses. The more familiar you are with the math, the more fun it is to draw cars. Once I figured out th

When the New Year's came around, I gave myself a bit of an ultimatum for my resolution. It was one of two things: "Follow my dreams or accept reality." Accepting reality would mean dropping the things that I love to do. Get a "real" job. And take care of business. I may be really realistic but I'm a stubborn ol' dream chaser. Reality?? Ain't nobody got time fo' that! All I want to see is my dream become a reality! Who wouldn't want their dream t

Zelda Wii U Rumored to be BIGGEST Zelda Game Yet!"According to our source in Japan, Nintendo is betting big on the next Zelda game, set for release in 2014 on the Wii U. This comes from the same source that accurately predicted Wii U achievements in the past, and broke the news Nintendo was working on a Wii U social network, which turned out to be Miiverse. So we’re quite confident in this information. The source is from within Nintendo and has seen the new Zelda game in action. He’s impressed, to say the least.Zelda Wii U Rumored to be BIGGEST Zelda Game Yet!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The first bit of information concerns the visual style of the game. Many Zelda fans are hoping for a darker, Twilight Princes-like Zelda on the Wii U, but it looks like Nintendo is sticking to most recent Zelda art style, found in Skyward Sword. “Nintendo is sticking to the core values of Zelda, while trying to appeal to a wide range of gamers, casual and hardcore”, our source told us, adding, “They feel they’ve found the sweet spot with Skyward Sword, and they’re continuing this appr

The Witchas Multifaceted Icon
Throughout history artists of every discipline have been fascinated, inspired and transfixed at every historical stage of the shifting perceptions of the “Witch” in any given time or society. The seams within every page of every chapter written against or in defense of the witch have been alternatively filled with oppressive sexism, blind eyed religious bigotry, occult doctrine, fevered and forbidden lustful sexuality, misplaced fear, and reams of wide eyed superstition.
Consequently, the colors, and lines within every stroke upon every canvas and visceral depiction, carry all the burdensome weight of the long intricacies of this subject. With respect to this much maligned, religiously and politically repurposed, perpetually misunderstood subject

THE NEXT THREE YEARS OF MY LIFE
I had received a job offer at Microsoft. I guess this could have been one of my first 'big time' jobs, so I was a little ecstatic. It felt like a slow build to get to this point, after numerous indie games and under the table freelance jobs, but finally it had come.
I was working with my now best friend and business partner, Stephan, a suave German who I had met only a year or so prior. He had brought me into the fray, working with several other individuals who will, well, simply be known as individuals for privacy sake.
But yes, finally, I could put a professional company I
