Tolkien Illustrator’s First Aid Kit: Elves
Tolkien’s texts are notable for their abundance of characters, many of them mentioned perhaps only once, other playing very important parts in the stories. However, it is often very difficult to find any description of how those characters look, and this is what we, artists and illustrators, are usually most concerned with.
So here it is – Tolkien Illustrator’s First Aid Kit – a list of all those characters, whose physical appearance is mentioned in the texts, including The Silmarillion and The History of the Middle-earth.
To start with, the Elves. As we know, during the march from Cuiviënén t

I decided to put my knowledge to use, for the benefit of our artistic community and all people out there trying to thrive.
As I've written in my ID, I'm a literature and language teacher. I've been working hard to get my master degree in French Literature and Narrative Theories, which will come latter this year.
And as for this, I thought I could be at your service to read your literature deviations and post you honest constructive critics based on the best of world wide letters!
But I have to be clear about one thing: I am not the kind of person that only say what you might want to hear.
I will never be rude or disrespectful BUT... it is needed of me to say sometimes things you may not agree or accept.
If you ask me for a critic don't be upset if I eventually point an aspect of your composition that needs to be improved.
I'm sure that it's not

TAD: Making It RightHere's an update about the royalties situation:TAD: Making It Right1 year ago in Personal More Like This
John English over at TAD stepped up and did the right thing by sending me a check for my royalties, which I have already received and banked.
He also gave me his word that he would be taking care of the other artists royalties who were wronged as well.
Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but he called me not long after I made my post wanting to know what he could do.
John said he didn't think people should get credit for doing the right thing and I agreed. But I still want to take the time to flesh this out a little because I want to keep my side of the street clean and because there's a lot of confused, angry, hurt, people.
Justified or not; dropping this nuke hurt TAD and TAD isn't only populated by the people who wronged me; it's comprised of people *just like me* trying to make a living in art.
I was wronged, but TAD isn't some cartoon villain plotting to suck the life-force from hapless artists; no one goes into business
The Hobbit. Jacksonised or: Pimp my Dwarf!UpdatesThe Hobbit. Jacksonised or: Pimp my Dwarf!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
As I read the Hobbit to my son, as Smaug lies buried under the waters of the Long Lake and as Elves, Dwarves, Men and Orcs are drawn to the Lonely Mountain by greed, I stumble over promo photos of the Hobbit http://www.herr-der-ringe-film.de/v3/de/news/tolkienfilme/news_72192.php and am reduced to disbelief.
Of course, I should have known. The target audience are the "Lotr" fans, the ones who have never read the books (probably tried, but gave up after "Concerning Hobbits"), who can't even be bothered to spell out the title of what they call their favourite book (or movie), who whooped with glee when Legolas surfed down the stairs of Helm's Deep on a shield or when Viggo, Orly and that alcoholic of a Dwarf kung-fu'd their way towards Théoden, and whom Jackson expects to be clamouring for more of the same in The Hobbit. He couldn't have made it a children's movie, no, of course not.
Thus, those lovable, squabbling Dwarves, who have only bread knives (which they lose

"When is the best time to plant a tree? Twenty years ago. The second best time? Today."
- Chinese proverb
2014: This is the 3rd year of the project. There are many people supporting it, featuring it in their journal and offering art. BUT... There have been NO trees planted for it in the last year (I don't count mine). So, instead of talking about it, how about getting up and actually planting a tree, if you are able to? There is a lot of wonderful art waiting for you as a reward!
Trees are important, valuable and necessary to our very existence. It's not too hard to believe that, without trees we humans would not exist on this beautiful planet. Trees are the largest and longest living organisms on earth. To grow tall the tree has become a miracle of engineering and a complex chemical factory. It is able to take water and

J. Paul Getty - The Liberation of Masterpieces as Open Content
The J. Paul Getty Museum has initiated an Open Content Program to share, freely and without restriction, as many of the Getty’s digital resources as possible.
A first sharing of 4,600 high-resolution images of the Museum’s collection, including many masterworks, has just been made available and all are free to use, modify, and publish for any purpose.
In a brilliant stroke, the Getty Museum has liberated one of the top collections of art in the world not just for access but for use. The museum is literally “beaming up” the great works in its collection as living resources within the arts themselves, for study, for sheer per

Take your art to higher lever in 4 simple steps!
For people who are serious about drawing and want to make career in art! And for me to stop getting questions on how to practice, or how do you get better
Are you stuck and don't know how to carry on making great art?
You just want to draw better?
If an answer to any of these questions is 'yes' then you might find this interesting...
Since the only thing I ever acknowledged myself good at is getting better I decided to share a couple of tricks.
I truly believe it works in every single case.
It's true. You can get out now or shut up and listen and get better.
(oh and do I need to mention that you need to draw a lot to get better?
I didn't draw a lot and still got better because I followed the steps listed below. But yeah, may not work without drawing a lot...)
Step 1. Honesty.
Be aware of your own limitations. They're usually bigger than you really think, despite what people say. I won't be talking about fals
Art in Contemplation of Its Own BecomingDuchamp finds a discarded urinal. He alters it (by signing a name to it not even his own, but obviously “the artist’s”) and names it “The Fountain”. The most mundane, even off-putting, of objects is transformed by Duchamp into art. He submits it for exhibition and it is rejected. You might say the judges “pissed on” his idea. But the idea was born and persisted. Duchamp insisted the object was art because he as an artist presented it as such. “Conceptual Art” was born.Art in Contemplation of Its Own Becoming3 years ago in Personal More Like This

JUUHANNA'S ART-RAFFLE! [WINNERS]Hello everybody, and welcome to my art-raffle journal!JUUHANNA'S ART-RAFFLE! [WINNERS]1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I've been thinking of different kinds of community-activities I could create or participate in, and this seems like it could be fun n easy.
In order to participate in the raffle, you have to do two things:
1. Add this journal to your favorites (so that you will have a number).
2. Leave a comment with a link to the character (or few alternative charas for me to choose from) you'd like me to draw if you're a lucky winner!
So fav+comment, and you're in!
The way it works is as follows:
Once the contest ends, I will use random number generator to get a number, and the person who has that number in the faves list will be the winner!
I will be making a colored portrait (shoulders up) for the winner!
As a bonus I will also generate a runner-up number, and the runner-up will get a port

Varios WebcomicsEsta entrada se ha retrasado más de lo que quería, pero ahí va una lista de varios webcomics, algunos con vistas a autoeditarse o que ya cuentan con una versión impresa.Varios Webcomics2 years ago in Personal More Like This
5 Art Selling TipsWhile I used to see "art sales" simply as bonus money coming in on the side, over the past few years it's become enough of an asset that it justifies an art dealer, record keeping, insurance, and taxes at the end of each year. It's currently 25% of my total income, and that has a lot of impact over my work. And just like storytelling, design and page flow--abstract principles that keep my career afloat daily--art sales also deserve to be studied, theorized, and understood.5 Art Selling Tips1 year ago in Personal More Like This
These are guidelines, not rules. And while most of them usually work for me, they might not all work for you, so keep in mind that my market might be different than yours. Because not only do we not draw the same, we probably have different sorts of buyers.
1. Don't stay on a book for too long
I find that doing mini series of 4-12 issues is optimal for selling art. If you spend a year doing one-shots or 2-3 issue minis, you'll be hard for buyers to keep track of because it's too infrequent. And it's hard to make an i

Intended for readers who have finished watching season 1 of The Legend of Korra.
If you hate spoilers, do NOT read until you've watched the entire series.
You have been warned.
Exploding through her family's hut, brazenly wielding elements far beyond her age-level, wildly announcing that, yes, she IS the new avatar and the world better get used to it. Now here's an avatar so unlike Aang! One who depends solely on herself, resorts to brute force to solve her problems. Yes, creators! Give us skill, power, conceit, and spiritual neglect. Let it blow up in her face, forcing her to cope with the fact that confrontation can’t solve everything. Just as Aang learns too little power is detrimental to his avatar role, so too will Korra learn the same lesson about too much power.
This is the dynamic, juxtaposed character
