A Brief History of TypographyA Brief History of Typography
A little insight into the history of not only Typography, but also of written language. This article will be far from covering it all, but focuses on highlighting some of the major events and periods in the history of Typography.
From the Greek roots τύπος typos = "impression" and -γραφία -graphia = "writing".
~ 30th Century BC – 200 AD
Or "Script of Nails / Cuneiform Script" is probably the oldest form of written text. This calligraphic form of writing was carved into clay tablets.

This article is here to highlight some of the most important terms when it comes to working with Typography. The terminology in this article is very basic, but it's not only for beginners! Knowing the proper terms for whatever you do avoids confusion and makes it easier for people to be on the same line of thought.
Please note: these terms all refer to the technical work with Typography. They do not cover the Anatomy of Typefaces (f.e. baseline, x-height or serif) or stylistic elements used in Typography (f.e. page layout or white space).
A Typeface is the compilation of a set of characters, which share a certain appearance. There are stylistic elements to each Typeface that also find relation to their classification.
While a Font traditionally only describes a set o

This feature of Typography showcases works that play with negative spac. This recurring theme in both Art and Design, challenges our mind in sometimes such a subtle manner that it is simply amazing. Using negative space for words while keeping the text readable is a trick that shows us how our minds are capable of so much more.

Through this series of articles we hope to answer some of the queries or give you that push you need to step outside boundaries and get creative. This week of projecteducate is dedicated to Typography in all its shapes and forms!
"Typography is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible." *
Typography surrounds us on a daily basis and usually we don't even notice it. Its purpose is to convey a message and not distract from it. This is what design is for: it puts information and language into something visually consumable.
This history of Typography starts long before Gutenberg or the Chinese invented movable type. Ever since language was born, man had to find other ways than mouth-to-mouth to transmit a message. What may have started with cave paintings developed into writing and thus, Typography was born.
There are many many faces to Typography: Calligraphy,
Photography Troubleshooting: Snap to ProThis week we bring you another issue of Troubleshooting for Photographers, to hopefully give you some tips and explanations behind how to make your Photography look that little bit more professional. Aeirmid noted that while there are a lot of folks in the photomanipulation community who enjoy taking photographs, there is also a great desire for people to learn a bit more about how to make them look more professional.Photography Troubleshooting: Snap to Pro3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Firstly combining the elements of many of the articles that have already been written in this series (see the bottom of this article for links) will assist anybody in gearing their photographs up to look more professional. However IsacGoulart summed it up quite neatly with this rather epic quote...
“Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph."
Getting your work up to some sort of standard is always tricky. Especially if you are setting the standar

Celebrating Diversity #1Welcome to this new series of Art Features! Even tho most of you are aware of the many many galleries and categories here on dA, I think most of us move in a sort of "comfort zone" between Galleries, Channels or Groups that provide us with a constant flow of new art. And sometimes we forget all the other great artforms, styles and media that are out of our "comfort zone". And today I want to step out of that warm and cuddly place and feature some awesome works from places on dA I don't usually visit!Celebrating Diversity #13 years ago in Art Features More Like This

PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your work3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be

The Pulitzer Prize Winning Photos were announced this week and with it a debate was sparked about how best to display the controversial winners. The winning shot is Photo-journalism at it's best - and indeed humanity at its worst. The image depicts a young Afghan girl standing in the midst of the after effects of a bomb explosion. She is covered in blood, and around her lay bodies. Whilst the publication of graphic images has been a tough and much debated topic for some time - the very taking of such photos has sparked cynicism and unrest between many. Photo-journalists much of the time take their lives into their own hands when they document the horrors of this

Update: Fair Exposure and Popular Browse Fair Exposure and miscategorizationUpdate: Fair Exposure and Popular Browse3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
On January 24th, 2012, we released an hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results. Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic.
Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system. Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results. This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.

Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definitionCommunity Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.

Project Educate: The Art of PhotomanipulationHello, deviantART! How are you?Project Educate: The Art of Photomanipulation4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I’m back to tell you a little bit about my very favorite form of art here on dA: photomanipulation, often referenced simply as, manipulation or manips. Hope you enjoy!
What is photomanipulation?
The general consensus in our community seems to be that photomanipulation involves taking elements from at least two photographs (and/or, by some definitions, other sources like 3D work or brushes) and fitting them together to create something that is seamless and distinct from the original sources. Some people argue that a photomanipulation can be made with one photograph as long as the final piece of art is drastically different from the picture from which it originated. If it is not dramatically different—i.e., if the final product is similar to the original photograph but perhaps a bit cleaned up or minor edits are added without including any new elements—we might call it a retouch<
Digital Photography and White Balance IntroductionDigital Photography and White Balance4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Back in the day of color film, we used to screw filters onto our lenses to correct unusual color casting. A handy color temperature meter would be used to find the temperature of the light. If the temp was too warm (yellow/orange'ish) , we screwed on a cooling filter (blue'ish filter). If it was too cool (to blueish), we screwed on a warming filter (yellow/ orange'ish). There were varying degrees of filters with different hues and opacities.
Thankfully, digital photography has not only made white balance (WB) easier and quicker, it's also made it forgiving. If you shoot RAW, you have the ability to change the WB in post processing. This is good news if you made a mistake with your in-camera technique.
How do you WB?
Most digital cameras have presets for lighting situations. For example, incadescent/tungsten light is a warm yellow orange.
Exercise : Grab a piece of white paper at home and really study it. Try to ign

“If life were a camera, I'd have the lens cap on.”
― Charles M. Schulz
I lacked the inspiration for any words for the article today, so I googled Photography under News and came up with something pretty amazing. Photography, it says, can be an ideal tool to give a voice to those who need it most, people on the margins of society, or who have little access to mass modes of outside communication. Photo-journalism goes some way to documenting those who can't document themselves, but how different would it be if they could do it? What would they photograph if they were stood behind the view finder looking forwards at their own lives? And equally - what would we photograph about ourselves?
PhotoVoice is a charity that was formed about ten years ago and is now well known for its commitment to training and developing the knowledge of those members of communities who are l
