Alfred had counted close to sixty-three times he'd tried, and failed, to escape from Ivan's cave that night. Even though he managed to navigate the labyrinth of dark tunnels and find the entrance, he could never get past the threshold. Ivan had put a spell on him so that he could never leave. All he could do was throw himself against the invisible force that kept him trapped inside in frustration until he got dizzy, hoping that by some stroke of luck he would fall through.
Eventually he began to wander back through the tunnels, a little amazed that the cave was actually so large. He doubted even Ivan had explored all of it.
