Advice for our Artists and WritersI figure this is a much needed journal. I know a lot of people want to know how to get better and how to rank better in the judging. It's very tough to judge at all, believe us - there are so many great entries and it's hard to give out numbers that suggest "this one is better than this other one-" but I guess that's the reality of judging, huh?Advice for our Artists and Writers4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well, this group IS here to give people prompts about what to draw. We like seeing improvement, and there was a good amount of it from people who entered Mission 2 after having done Mission 1. I can only imagine how much more improvement we'll see with these next ones!
I suppose I ought to start at something that both the art and writing categories have in common:
For these two categories, readability means a separate but similar thing.
For art, ask yourself these questions...
1) Is my handwriting legible?
It's important that we can clearly and quickly read what you wr
Higginbotham Academy of Magical EducationChange in Terminology:Higginbotham Academy of Magical Education4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Around the time of the American Revolution, it was decided among the magical community that terms like "Wizard" and 'Witches" was too Old-World sounding. Like the Muggles around them, the magic community saw the New-World as a new beginning. Soon after American Independence from England, Wizards started calling themselves "Sorcerer" and Witches likewise called themselves "Sorceress". Since some older establishments like Salem Witches Institute has been around since 1644, the name was not changed due to tradition. However, modern girls attending the school refer to themselves as Sorceresses.
The Magic World in Philadelpha:
A hidden sorcery community is in every major city, and Philadelphia is no exception. In the Historic District of Philadelphia, located on 4th and Cherry. there is an old looking condominium called "Carrington's Boarding". It is believed by Muggles that the building hasn't b

What is art? There's a lot of deviations on the front page that I check out just so I can read the comments. What is art?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
A lot of users seem to think they can define what is art and what isn't, and this never fails to infuriate me.
Have these people ever been to any art galleries? A lot of popular modern art looks like it's been drawn by 5 year olds in 5 minutes, while classical art all looks exactly the same. Maybe they should go visit some museums and start shouting "not art, herp derp" until they get thrown out.
If stuff you don't like makes the front page, it means there's an audience for that sort of stuff, in which case you should be blaming DeviantArt's user base rather than insulting the artists. Funnily enough, unoriginal Pokemon and Pony crap doesn't get as much hate as a lot of nude stuff. I wonder why. (*coughpersonalinsecuritiescough*)
Wikipedia's definition of art is: "Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and aff

Copyrights, patents, piracy etcHay guys, to what extent do you think it's okay to steal/copy stuff?Copyrights, patents, piracy etc4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm really undecided about many of these issues myself, so I made myself a wee questionaire and filled it in with my opinions.
Keep in mind I'm not a lawyer, and don't really care about what the actual laws are.
Do you think it's okay to pirate software, movies, music and books?
I support piracy because I see it as free advertising and believe that most people who would have paid for it still will.
I make a point to buy stuff I really like, though I'm more likely to support poorer developers or projects that just didn't pay off.
How about pirating really old stuff (NES games, The Beatles etc)?
It really bothers me how Nintendo are still trying to sell their old games, but then again they'd lose sales on their new games if they gave away those old ones for free. So *shrugs*. I've never felt bad about not paying for old stuff though, it's more important to support those who are actually

Happy Ending Mod (MEHEM) and Tali Photo ModMost of you have probably already heard about it, but I've been made aware that a fan-made mod for the ending of ME3 was recently released, called The Mass Effect Happy Ending Mod.Happy Ending Mod (MEHEM) and Tali Photo Mod3 years ago in Personal More Like This
You can read more about it at this BSN thread: http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/355/index/14795358/1
And you can also watch some of the footage here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU7XJdaz08I&feature=g-high-u http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhjNPWrApnI&feature=relmfu
On a related note, there also seems to be a mod that swaps out Tali's photo, which you can see and find download links for here:
Feel free to discuss in the comments of this journal, if you like. Though, don't forget to leave some feedback for the modders if you so choose.

1st off, put away your snowflake porn, winter is over... \sicko\... that being said,
There is /b/ a rapidly expanding paradox within the scientific community that has been dubbed 'the singularity';
simply put, it is the rise of machines from mindless constructs to fully sapient organisms. (Moar specifically it is the eventual rise of a singular construct bearing intellect that equals the ENTIRE human race - but we are simply concerned with sapience and mote conscious at this hour..) Science fiction has covered elements of this subject in many forms, from tasteful compositions such as 'i Robot' to lesser artistic productions such as 'Stealth'. It is ironic that 'Stealth' is closer to the truth than the majority of these films. Behold, your (if applicable) military's 'Great' plan:

Ad Astra Per Aspera Setting BibleI have been informed that the original link to the file is broken, so I have reposted it here for everyone to see.Ad Astra Per Aspera Setting Bible2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The Ad Astra Per Aspera setting is not the happiest one. Trueline is run by several dystopian regimes and everything outside of it is much worse. When writing, keep Orwellian and Lovecraftian themes in mind. The individual is an insignificant insect in the middle of a cold, dark universe that is apathetic at best and actively malicious at worst. If someone’s tyrannical government doesn’t kill him, the unspeakable monstrosity beyond the void will. Life is, as Thomas Hobbs put it, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.
However, your story doesn’t have to be this depressing. You can break away from the mold and write a story set in Ad Astra Per Aspera but not really of it. It could be a happy slice of life piece about one of the luckier residents of the Milky Way. It could be a darkly humorous take on the state of affairs (I encourage th

After getting out of a slump, I wanted to share this story of something I went through a few years back. Bit of a read, but thanks for sticking through it
As you know, Comic-Con is arriving and as I prepare for it, I grow more and more anticipated with anxiety/joy in regards to the re-release of Last Man Standing.
As long, challenging, and mind-opening the creation of LMS was, something really stuck with me.
Before I had created LMS, I wanted to work for WETA Workshop. To those that don't know them, they've created props, designs, sets, costumes, and more for The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, District-9, Elysium, The Hobbit and many more films.
I was obsessed and inspired with them. The creator, Richard Taylor was always a huge inspiration to me. After viewing supplements on the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings DVDS, I knew right there: I HAD TO WORK FOR THEM.
So I al
Fast lane to becoming a better artist.I often get this very question: How did you get this good this fast?Fast lane to becoming a better artist.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Now as I consider myself not being as good as people tell me, even struggling quite often with being an artist in general.
I do know how to get better and how to reach it fast. I'm still growing as I go and it's the main thing that keeps me going.
You need to get into the right mindset and the rest will follow. With the rest I mean:
3. Positive energy.
4. The NEED to draw.
Seeing growth in your work gives you the courage to work harder. You know that feeling when you're just about done with an image
and feel like this image is better than your last one, that great feeling. Use it!
Do studies! Lots of them!! Make film shot studies, live object studies, master-painting studies. They will teach you a lot about composition, lighting, colors, shapes storytelling etc.
You will hardly notice that you are learning thing
