The Four Winds of Konoha CH.1CHAPTER 1 : The Winds of Change
The war had ended, and despite all that had changed, when the shinobi that fought in it returned to their homes, life continued on as it had before the war. Sure, there was a lot to clean up, villages to rebuild, peace treaties left to sign, a new Hokage to be promoted, and shinobi to be recalled from formerly enemy, now ally, territories. But otherwise, life went on.
"Still the feeling of change is inescapable," Tenten mused as she munched on a crisp celery stick in her hand; part of the lunch she was eating while sitting at the base of the large oak tree that grew in one corner of hers and Nejis training field. The one that had the heart with the T, ampersand and N carved into it. The very same heart that for the longest of time Neji had mistakenly believed read "TEN" when in fact it was their initials that were carved into the wood. Of course this was before the two of them had started dating and the long time crush had seemed

Lady Tsunade stared at them with bloodshot amber eyes, seeming absolutely exhausted even though it was barely ten in the morning. "I know that one of you is a jounin and the other two are chuunin, but..." She hesitated, fiddling with the files in front of her, making sure all edges aligned perfectly with each other as well as the sides of the desk before she looked up again. "I'm giving you a D-rank mission today."
Tenten fought back an impulse to twitch. D-rank? She searched her memory, flipping through her team's last few missions in an attempt to remember if any of them had done anything unforgivably horrible. Lee, of course, had been Lee: wildly loud and enthusiastic and himself; Gai, as always, an older version of Lee (or perhaps Lee was, instead, a younger version of Gai?); Neji his unflappable self: strong, silent, with that one vein in his forehead occasionally protruding from suppressed irritation

Neji and Tenten were married on a Sunday in March, the sun bright in the sky. They were only 23, but ninjas didn't tend to live into there thirties so no one said anything. Neji actually smiled, a real true smile, when Tenten glided down the aisle, flushed with happiness. They kissed at the alter, danced at the reception, and were waved off to their honeymoon by happy friends and family.
It seemed to be perfect, and for that one day it was. The following day however, proved to be the worst day of Neji's life.
They knew it was coming, and knew that it would have to be done before the pair set off to the Land of Waves for their two week getaway, but Neji had never imagined it would be so horrible. It was the day Tenten received the curse mark.
Dressed in all white the pair sat stoically together as the Elders prepared for the marking ceremony. Tenten gave Neji's hand a little squeeze as if to tell him it was alright, as if he was th

My utmost apologies for troubling you, but it appears you've been assigned a difficult mission. I am taking this time to remind you of our training. I have all of my faith in the fact you'll succeed, but you tend to let your guard down on your right side. Make sure to be aware of that. It wouldn't be beneficial to the team if something were to happen. Please excuse me, though, for speaking so forwardly. We all await your return.

I'm on my way back to Konoha as I write this. Your reminder about my dropped guard really helped on the mission. We were able to complete the mission sooner than we expected. I really appreciate the time you put into sparring with me. Thank you. I also want to say how much your note meant to me as well. We'll be back in a month—give or take the weather. Wishing to be home...

Tenten knew Neji had a soft side, one he hid from most of the world. She knew because she'd seen it.
She saw it when he ate the anniversary dinner at his parents grave. Even in the early days, before he and his uncle had learned to understand each other, the anger in his eyes was always replaced with a soft aching sadness when he sat before the stone with two names carved in it. He hadn't invited her, not exactly. Out of concern she had trailed after him, thinking he didn't know. When he sighed, stood up, then walked over and dragged her out from behind the tree she had thought he would yell at her or send her away. Neji surprised her though and introduced her to his parents as his new team m

"Damn it!" TenTen growled as her keys clattered to the floor, slipping out of her hand before she'd successfully gotten them into the lock. Annoying as this was, it was made worse by the fact that her arms were full of bags of groceries, and bending down to reach them would crush her bread. She could bend down at her knees, but would she be able to get the keys without putting the groceries on the floor and opening up a way for a mouse or other foul creature to get into her apartment?
She was trying very hard to get all those things out, complicated by the fact that she wasn't sure whether or not she was supposed to touch chemicals and she was playing on the safe side for now. The last thing she needed was more of the buggers sneaking into her apartment.
Putting more weight on her right leg and trying to balance the groceries on the other as she bent into the best crouch she could manage, and most definitely not thinking about h

Sun streaked through the open window. It hit the foot of the bed just enough to warm it, but not enough to actually wake the occupants. Despite the early hour, though, one of them was already laying with eyes open.
"Hmmm." Tenten sighed. She snuggled down into the blankets wanting to fall back asleep but finding it impossible.
The arms wrapped around her midsection tightened with the slight movements she had made. Neji's thumb began running smooth circles against her skin as he also began to wake. It was something he always did when the two shinobi lay in a bed together. Tenten knew it was an unconscious habit, but she liked to think he did it to her on purpose.
These types of missions were her favorites. It gave her one-on-one time with Neji that could rarely be found on other more dangerous jobs or even back home in Konoha. Plus the cover of being husband and wife came with the perk of sharing a bed.
She'd never admit it out loud t

It wasn’t often Tenten kept Neji waiting. She was nearly as punctual as he was himself. Being late was not something tolerated. So when Neji found himself sitting on her sofa waiting for his teammate and friend to emerge from her bedroom, the Hyuuga prodigy had to ask why.
“Nothing. I’ll be out in just a minute,” the girl responded in a sweet voice.
“Hn.” Tenten laughed at Neji’s expected tone. He was ready for their daily training and wanted to get started.
But first the girl had to finish painting her nails for her date that evening.
She had been outright shocked when a civilian boy had approached her the previous day with the timid request for a dinner date the following night. Unsure of her answer, Tenten had reluctantly agreed. It wasn’t like she had any other plans. And since it was an… unusual event for her, she had decided to dress up a little; which included painting her finger and toe nai

That is, until, she joined Team Guy.
One the second day of their formation, Guy demanded that they share their birthdays, and as it happened Tenten's was the closest to date. The girl had no idea that her teacher would start planning something the second he had his hands on the information.
Several weeks later on the day of her 13th birthday, Tenten answered the door to Might Guy and Rock Lee shoving large bouquets of flowers. Tenten's face flushed such a deep shade of red, her hair went from chocolate brown to autumn red. Neji was not among their boisterous teammates who escorted her out tha

Lee and Guy raced ahead with Tenten and Neji not to far behind. Neji had his Byakugan activated and was scanning the hallways for any signs of life. Due to some amount of foresight on the part of the designer of the strong hold the sides of the hallways were lined with led, allowing the white eyed jonin to only see the path they were on.
Tenten heard the familiar sound of a sword being drawn and stopped, looking for the source. Neji realized a moment later, but by then it was too late, the trap had closed. Lee and Guy were far ahead, looking back in time to see Neji and Tenten sectioned off from them by a large metal panel.
The kunoichi of the team saw the same thing happen on her end, leaving Neji

“No,” Tenten quickly, but calmly, replied.
She hoped her quickness did not come off the wrong way, but the sudden question had caught her by surprise and she had not given herself time to think. It was probably a good thing, however, since she was certain it would have stung a lot more than it already did, if the response had come from him and not her.
“We're not,” she turned to Neji as he slowly nodded his agreement, while he helped the bun-haired kunoichi into her seat before taking the chair directly next to her.
“Really?” Ino sighed deeply. “That's a shame,” she added, looking back and forth between the two teammates. “You two look good together

"That's enough for today." Neji called up to her and Tenten reluctantly came down. Neji was kneeling, eyes closed and Tenten kneeled down nest to him. When he sat like this it meant he wanted to speak to her. It was probably about something she did wrong during their spar.
"Tenten, we are teammates, and teammates help each other out at the request of other teammates, correct?" Neji asked, eyes still closed.
"Yes." Tenten replied reluctantly.
"So will you help me complete an important rite of passage that I have been informed that I must complete?" Now his eyes opened, but they showed the same brush, business like tone that his voice had.

The six year old folded her arms and shot a glare at the small boy only a few feet away from her. Neji was glaring back, his white eyes now further emphasized by a large black mark directly under his right one. Tenten didn’t even bother hiding a smug grin at her handy work.
“No.” Tenten said promptly, stomping her foot slightly as Iruka sighed deeply. The other teacher, a new woman she didn’t know well, mirrored Iruka’s body language as she stood by Neji.

"It's nothing," the blue-haired girl smiled reassuringly as her boyfriend and cousin hurried to her side. She was holding her right hand, which was far from a few shades darker from it's usual pale color. A bright circle was forming over her quickly reddening skin.
Immediately the fang faced boy ran to the refrigerator, and pulled out the carton of eggs at the top. "I'm borrowing this!" he quickly informed Tenten as he brushed passed her towards Hinata. "Gimme your hand," the boy instructed, pulling the white-eyed girl toward the sink, where he cracked open an egg in one hand and expertly separated the yolk from the white as if he were used to doing this. Taking the clear part of the egg in his hand, Kiba held the Hyuga girl's injured flesh in it and watched as her pai

"Where is Tenten-chan?" Lee asked worriedly. We were supposed to be heading out on a mission in a few minutes, a simple B rank messenger job which I thought was below three jonin but kept my mouth shut. I shrugged apathetically, but was secretly becoming more and more worried.
"Her brother died." Sai said, coming up behind Lee and I. I looked at him in disbelief. The only member of Tenten's family she had left had died.
"How?" Lee asked.
"S ranked ANBU mission. His teammates buried him out in the wind country where he died and Tenten just got the news last night." Sai responded, "I'm here to take over for Tenten."

The thought remaining in the Hyuuga's mind kept replaying over and over, as he questioned himself once more. It was pointless, his Uncle Hiashi had told him it would be good for him, never the less his cousin had gotten a date and was asked to take her there.
He leaned against the table gently, a blank expression on his face as he stared at his younger cousin dancing with who must have been her date. He couldn't tell who any of these people were, even for being classmates of him, they all had masks on. Taking another sip of his punch in disinterest he sighed slightly. Some of his classmates he hung out with had no clue he was there, but he was sure if he took one step on the dance floor, to where their pestering eyes could find the dark haired man, and never the less recognize him, they'd be sure to start bugging him with something stupid.
It wasn't until he heard a voice speak up that he realized he wasn't alone over in the dark corner at the ignor

That was probably more than anything he said in the past few days. This mission took first priority, and Sakura refused to delude herself otherwise. All she can feel is overwhelming despair, like a gaping abyss in front of her, a blank hole where her future should be, and there's just this ache in her chest, a dull pain that hurts so much she's doubled over.
It's still not real. She still can't believe it.
She wants to punch something.

She can't help feeling like she will see Neji walking around, strong and silent, and he'll smirk-smile at her and everything will be alright.

The Beginning Ch. 3It had been one month since that first meeting with her team. As she got ready for the day, she thought about all the progress they had made as a team. Tenten, Lee, and Neji had been sparring every day under Gai-sensei's watchful eye. At first, Tenten thought that her sensei was a complete goofball, but he was turning out to be one of the best teachers she had ever had. He was even making tremendous progress with Lee in taijutsu. Neji had been quiet about Lee becoming a ninja ever since Tenten had confronted him on the first day, but she could still tell that Neji was having a hard time accepting it. As a team, they were growing fast and this made Tenten smile. This is the first time I've had people to be friends with. It's the first time I've had someone to rely on, she thought. She had gotten to know the two boys on her team more than she thought she would over the month. Two recent moments stuck out in Tenten's mind, one with Lee and the other with Neji. The Beginning Ch. 34 years ago in Romance More Like This

Konoha was celebrating the first anniversary of the ending of the war, something still bittersweet to many of the ninja. Many had been lost, but many had been saved, so to a ninja it was all worth it.
The famed weapon's mistress was walking down the main street of the village in her kimono, shivering slightly as she tried to find her team. Lee and Guy were definitely at the test of strength that had been set up, or maybe they were getting masks painted, or catching goldfish. Upon thinking about it, Tenten realized the two green beasts could be anywhere.
"Tenten." A cool baritone sounded from her left. She did not bother looking at him, she knew who it was.
"I'm surprised you wanted to leave the compound for such an event, Neji. Aren't the elders in the process of assigning you a bride? I thought you'd want some input into such a decision." Tenten was p
