The sky is dark over the Everfree forest. There are stars that shine in the air, but they do not glitter. They seem painted on, mainly for show. They seem slightly wrong. Even the moon, caught between half and crescent as it wanes in time and fades away, seems strangely artificial, with a shape too bulky, and craters too big.
The Everfree forest seems natural enough, darkened to near blackness as it is, but it is strangely without sound. There is wind, as it blows at Force Three or Four, tugging at every branch and leaf, whistling as they undulate in the breeze. But the animals are absent. Nature seems silenced. As if all that grew, moved, thought and ate were at some secret place of worship. Or if they had fled from some great, powerful force of destruction.
A few leaves individually flit between the trees. Was that a rabbit, darting behind the tree? The grass bends and sways.
Then comes the step. Water parts and leaps, in the wake of the ste

Madness had enveloped the ballroom of the Canterlot Castle. Animals from Celestia's normally very peaceful menagerie ran amok, attacking guests willy nilly, driving them from the room. Applejack had managed to dodge harm so far, but many of the high class mares and stallions around her were not so lucky. Their glimmering jewelry attracted the animals' attention, and most had already fled. All except one, who had been hit by a falling statue and was lying frightening still, not moving even while being pecked by a flock of perturbed toucans.
Applejack heard Twilight whistle and saw her wave for them to run. Applejack was about to race after them, but looked back at the unconscious pony. She vaguely recognized him, but it was hard to tell from under the blanket of angry birds. She hesitated, then rushed toward him, yelling at the top of her lungs and bucking the birds out of her way. She reached the pony, a unicorn stallion, and grabbed him by the collar with her teeth, dragging him out o

As soon as the Sisterhooves Social race ended, Dinky the unicorn ran up the bleachers to her mother. "Didja see us? Didja? Didja?" she asked, grinning like her face would split.
Derpy grabbed her daughter and swung her around. "Butter and excellence, the cute badgers sing!"
Violet Sparkler trotted over. She stopped next to the bleachers, and nervously rubbed one forehoof against the other. "Hey, Miz Hooves?" she said, "I know Dinky and I aren't real sisters, but, um, thanks for letting us compete together."
"Kumquat and the entrance," said Derpy, nodding.
"I mean," said Violet suddenly, quickly, as if she'd been holding the words back for too long, "I've never had a little sister, and when they put Dinky in my foster home I was so happy there was another unicorn there, but she was just so sad, and she missed her mother so much."
Derpy looked at Violet (and a tree to the left), intrigued.
"And when she got to go home, she
Dark Equestria, Part 1Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there were two regal sisters who ruled together and created harmony for all the land. To do this, the eldest used her unicorn powers to move the moon across the starlit skies. The younger brought out the sun, when the bright light was called for. Thus, the two sisters maintained balance for their kingdom and their subjects: all the different types of ponies.Dark Equestria, Part 15 years ago in Drama More Like This
But as time went on, the younger sister's pride made her grow resentful. She envied the beauty of night and wished to impose the blazing light of her sun on the ponies and the world all the time. One fateful night, the younger unicorn raised the sun in challenge to her sister's beauty and glory. The elder sister tried to reason with her, but the overweening vanity and pride in the young one's heart had transformed her into a wicked mare of blazing fire: Hellion Queen. She vowed that she would burn away the night, blot out the stars and banish all rest.
A Sparkle of Hope"Oh, woe is me," Rarity cried out as the group was returning to Ponyville from Canterlot. "I met him, the colt I've been working my whole life up to meet; he turned out to be such a pig!" Rainbow Dash rolled her eyes at all of the drama. Sure, she didn't get the quality time with the Wonderbolts like she had hoped either but she wasn't whining about it. "I'll never meet anypony that will be good enough to marry me!" Rarity stopped crying and suddenly wore an insane look on her face, "I'll live alone, forever, just me and Opal. Sweetie Belle will find her special talent and naturally, she will find a wonderful colt to treat her well and she'll leave me alone in my dress shop. I'll just stitch and sow forever." It appeared as if she twitched slightly, her mane started to come out, frizzled in many places. Spike smiled, this was his chance to finally make a move on Rarity. Spike would just have to be a gentleman and Rarity would be like a marshmallow in his hands. Twilight Sparkle glaredA Sparkle of Hope4 years ago in Romance More Like This

"Just one moment!" Thunk. Somewhat dazed, Luna pulled her face away from the desk. "Come in!" she said, her horn and muzzle throbbing slightly.
Through the door trotted - oh, what a surprise! Yet another pony levitating a stack of papers about twice the size of the last. "Princess," he said, oblivious to the piercingly-annoyed glare in Luna's eyes, "The request to change the Equestrian national tree from the Holly Oak to the Bay Willow has been withdrawn, so the reinstatement paperwork needs to be filled out."
This late at night? "Alright," replied Luna, already readying her quill, "I think I can-"
"And," he interrupted, "The budget cuts for the School for Gifted Unicorns need to be finalized."
That again?! "Of course." Luna nodded, keeping her voice

Chapter One: Apple Challenge
It was late morning for Ponyville. The warm, mid-autumn sun was still rising overhead as Applejack worked out in the apple orchards of Sweet Apple Acres. A light breeze wafted through the grass, carrying with it the wondrous smell of the orchard: the damp, nutrient-rich earth, the strong scent of the trees and, of course, the tantalizing aroma of the sweet, ripe apples waiting to be picked.
After a couple of days dedicated to raining in an attempt to fix a schedule mixup, it was nice that the Weather Team decided to make up for it by having today be very warm and sunny. The grass was still slightly damp with yesterday's rainfall, and it squelched a bit as Applejack made her way through the forest of apple trees. She didn't mind at all, though; she had gotten much dirtier from doing less than this, and she actually enjoyed doing this rather mundane task. The entire orchard was covered in dew drops, giving the place a brilliant, renewed lo

Rainbow Dash was having one of her trademark naps on a tree, content and undisturbed. The sun was out, the birds were singing, and if it was business as usual Rainbow would've gagged at how cliche it was. But there had been a brief lull in her adventures, and though she wouldn't admit it to any of her friends, she was glad. After how well the Grand Galloping Galla went, she and her fellow Elements could use a rest. Dash was perfectly fine with that, allowing her mind to drift to her favorite dreams, when-
Dash gave a "little" jump, causing her to not only fall off the tree, but to crash through several of the branches on the way down. A bonk on the head through the first branch, a crash through the second with her torso, and finally her wings were caught on the next two branches below. Angered by her predicament, she struggled to break free and while successful, she didn't have enough time to brace herself for the fall. After all this, R

"I like it!" Pinkie Pie said excitedly. "It's like a rollercoaster, but with more bumps and noise and shaking!"
"That's precisely what I'm talking about."
"Oh, trust me, you'll grow to love it," said the Doctor. He jumped up and grabbed his brown coat from the floor. "Right, here we are: Ponyville, Equestria, in the year well, I don't know what year it is I don't even know what year we left but I'm pretty sure it's sometime in your future. Hmm, I'd better look into your dating system; it'll probably help with avoiding paradoxes and such. Anyway!" He threw open the door. "Welcome to the future of Ponyville "

AUTHOR'S NOTES: This is one of many stories I've thought up walking around at work with my head full of technicolor ponies. I felt the urge to write something about everyone's favorite non-crosseyed background ponies, and this is the story that came to mind. I really liked it and I hope it comes off as sweet as I imagined it. I love these two! There needs to be more of them.
The sky is awash in many shades of orange and gray as the light of day wanes. Knee-high grass sways in the gentle breeze, a beautiful ocean of jade stretching out as far as the eye can see, dotted with an array of multicolored flowers soaking in what remains of the sun's rays. The meadow ground climbs upward into a modest hill featuring shorter grass, and adorned with one lone, large tree. The sun slowly disappears behind the tree and the horizon beyond, gradually blanketing the area in darkness. The darkness is quic

One of Derpy's favorite things to do is helping mommy. Mommy is always running around the house and doing all kinds of things, and the house is really big, and there's all kinds of stuff inside, so Derpy gets to help a lot.
Right now, Derpy wants to help make muffins because they're her favorite. She even knows where the flour is (it's in one of the big cabinets in the kitchen), but when she tries to get it out of the cabinet it gets all over because the bag is really big and she can't always move so good and mommy says "Look at the mess you made! Go play somewhere else!"
But Derpy doesn't cry or anything even though mommy was loud. Since mommy won't let her help in the kitchen, Derpy wants to go play with Miss Sweetie, that's her favorite doll, Miss Sweetie. She's her favorite one because she's yellow and Derpy likes yellow most of all. Derpy's mane is yellow, and so is mommy. Mommy is yellow all over. Derpy knows all the colours. She knows red, and blue, and green, and purple
Flight Of the Harmony: PrologueEven as the sun dives behind the mountains, Canterlot is never dark. Gas lanterns brighten the dark streets of the inner city where the Equestrian Aristocracy walks at languid paces displaying their most beautiful outfits for all to see. As Twilight sped past the fancy cafès of boulervard Montmare, she briefly turned around to see if Spike could keep up the pace. The purple dragon was struggling not to fall behind as he dribbled between the legions of the canterlot èlite, collecting many displeased gazes as he stepped on several skirts.
The castle was enveloped in flickering lights which painted the building a melancholy shade of orange.

Twilight Sparkle was, as was often the case in the afternoon, intensely focused on reading a book at her desk. Tonight, Dr. Hawk's 'Astrological Anomalies and Astral Artifacts' was the subject of her attentions. With Spike out of town for the week on Canterlot business, she had the entire place to herself. Every single shelf lining the tree house library's walls crammed with condensed knowledge, all for her.
Pausing as her mind snagged on that thought, Twilight frowned. Sometimes she wondered if she was the only pony in Ponyville who actually enjoyed a good book. There was something terribly disappointing and wrong about Spike's absence resulting in predictable solitude.
When she thought about it like that, she almost missed the baby dragon already. Though she loved her friends dearly, none of them were exactly - to use a term they loved to apply to her - "bookworms".
There was a loud thud, the library shaking as something impacted against the outside walls of the library. The resultin

Even if Pinkie Pie had cured her of any lingering fear of the dark, the Everfree still held many real, tangible horrors. Twilight Sparkle had spent the first few minutes glancing every which way, trying to identify every sound, expecting an ambush behind every tree, but she slowly managed to calm down a little. She had been to Zecora's place even after the cockatrice attack. It just still didn't mean this was a good idea.
Her heartbeat didn't slow down though, because the second she stopped jumping at shadows, she made attempts to rationally analyze her feelings. She remembered Rarity's words, and knew that she had to have an answer. Of course she had read books that touched upon the subject of love, but it was allegedly notoriously hard to pin down. There was romantic love, the love between friends, love as a form of appreciation, and many more besides.
But beyond these categories, nothing she'd read felt like it applied. If anything, it reminded her of descriptions of flight that she

Scumbag: the most prolific term in my vocabulary is the word scumbag, and for good reason; almost everyone I meet in the streets nowadays is a scumbag.
What constitutes a scumbag? The signs are too long to list, but I don't need to; I know a scumbag when I see one, and the unicorn running away from me at this very moment constituted a grade-A example of what a real scumbag is.
The filthy piece of scum ran - flying almost - as I pursued him, pistol levitating near my head in a soft, dark colored glow. He sure ran fast for someone who had just had a bullet pierce his hind leg; but I had grown accustomed to this sight, as it had played out in the same form for more times that I dared count.
His ragged red robes concealed just how dangerous this piece of equine filth was, and this one was as vile as you could get: a foal-raping, mass-murdering cannibal cultist who was mere seconds away from having his brains become part of the pavement.

Fluttershy was trotting. She did not seem to know where she was heading nor even if she was conscious of her surroundings, as the yellow Pegasus pony was trotting through a dark void blanketed by a thick smoke. Her face appeared calm and serene, almost completely void of any emotion. It was if this was not Fluttershy at all, but a robot specifically designed to move like her in a synchronised motion of her limbs and trot at only level of medium speed.
All of a sudden, a feeling of dread spread across Fluttershy's face. It could not be explained, but every instinct was telling her to trot onwards at a brisker pace, as if there was something nearby she should do best to get away from. She tried her best to stay calm, but the anxiety was starting to eat at her from inside.
