Critical Assessment and Aftermath of Art SchoolCritical Assessment and Aftermath of Art School2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This is an updated account on how things are going years after having left art school, the effects it's had on me, and my personal thoughts on attending. My views here aren't wholly different than the few rants I've had on the subject in the past, but it's one I believe I have to continue talking about to assist others in making the right decisions for themselves and their future path. (I should also mention that this is the viewpoint of an american in America.)
It's become increasingly clear to me over the last year that out of my 25 years on this Earth, there's only one decision I ever truly regret: and that was going to art school. Now, there's a good chance that I may not be saying this had I attended a different school, but there's no way to ever know, so what I'm really saying is "I regret going to the school I chose, not school in general." I feel as though I was let down by my school. I held up my end of the bargain (some $80~$90

All profits raised will go directly to the RedKite, a foundation that works closely with children living with cancer, helping families financially in these tough times."

There will be four winners, each winner judged separately from the four categories available; green, blue, yellow and red
So what do we have to draw?
Premium Content and how I feel about making moneyHalloPremium Content and how I feel about making money2 years ago in Personal More Like This
There's a new feature called premium content that allows users to make file downloads available for a charge. This seems to be something with a vast range of different possibilities that range from quite nice to to quite lame. Of course we are all always against commercialization and sell-outs and everything and don't want things to change but there are some interesting options here.
Obviously everyone is going to know whether or not this is something he or she could use and how much sense it's going to make for what you do specifically but there's two points I want to adress.
I always thought it was lame when people sell stuff like brushes or psd files. This is probably just my personal opinion and many will certainly disagree for valid reasons, but I think, if you make some brushes, and you ask money for something as tiny as that, you are lame. Sorry. Actually, the point here is not that it will kill someone to pay like one buck for something tiny, it's just that it change
Razer Nostromo for Digital PaintingHey guys, I just wanted to share something that has GREATLY improved my digital painting setup.Razer Nostromo for Digital Painting2 years ago in Personal More Like This
For several months now I have been using the Razer Nostromo, a keypad designed for games, specifically for digital painting. It lets me compact all my most-used hotkeys into an ergonomic gadget.
I would consider this a must-have tool for the serious digital painter. I can hardly work without it now.
It was about $50 on Amazon a while back. Apparently there is also a new model out, but it is much more pricey. I would probably stick with this one.
Note: this may not work for you if you are left-handed

Great way to deal with Stress.Great way to deal with stress.Great way to deal with Stress.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I needed this. A reminder of how to deal with stress: Just write everything in your head down, and in the process emptying it completely. You don't have to think about a million things anymore, It's on paper. And just like that, you have peace.
Now you can look at all these problems and say. This is important, this isn't, this is the most important, this is what I need to do for it.
Everyone already does this in their head.
Problem is, when everything is still in there it keeps jumping around. And you'll be focusing on one problem and all of a sudden another problem jumps in and you lose your focus, then another one joins the dance and suddenly your head is spinning and you're lying on your couch staring at the ceiling feeling like you've not slept for a week.
Paralyzed and overwhelmed.
Just write it out, from "My business plan needs a complete redo" to "I don't like the color of my shoes" in no particular order, whatever comes up as you're writing.
understand a painting study dont just copyThis is purely an observation from my point of view but whenever i see a study or painting based on a masterpiece or a screen plate. The results are almost in every case very good.So this tells me that our ability to copy is quite good and its not really required to be a high level artist.Junior level to mid level ones can pull this off easily too. Everything you need to know is already in the image we are trying to copy so it becomes a recipe for us.understand a painting study dont just copy2 years ago in Personal More Like This
the important thing though is to not "copy" it but to understand it and deconstruct a work method from it.And if you understand that then the work based from your own mind will be alot better.
When i see this kind of work , for me its not the level of detail and accurcy that one puts in the copied artwork that impresses me, but the images based on that learned knowledge afterwards. And to tell you the truth not many people understand this knowledge or are aware of how important it is to understand it.But the interesting phenomenon is that

Download my brushset and learn brush groupingHey everyone, I just put up a new video showing a simple, yet super handy way to categorize and group your brushes in Photoshop. It's especially useful if you have a really big set like me, it makes it really easy to find what you need so you don't have to hunt around constantly. I've also provided a download link to my current set of brushes with the video.Download my brushset and learn brush grouping1 year ago in Personal More Like This

The Matter of the MassesI've been painting for a few years now, but I feel like I'm only beginning to grasp the importance of this concept. I'll quote Robert Henri (1865-1929) from his book, The Art Spirit, which is packed full of such profound wisdom. The Matter of the Masses1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Robert Henri stresses this point:
"Insist on the beauty of form and color to be obtained from the composition of the largest masses, the four or five large masses which cover your canvas. Let these above all things have fine shapes, have fine colors. Let them be as meaningful of your subject as they possibly can be. It is wonderful how much real finish can be obtained through them, how much of gesture and modeling can be obtained through their contours, what satisfactions can be obtained from the fine measures in area, color and value. Most students and most painters in fact rush over this; they are in a hurry to get on to other matters, minor matters."
"The beauty of the larger mass is primary

As a preface to the upcoming novel I'm working on this year...
I've been doing a lot of concept work and nothing is really set in stone but as for the basics, here they are!
. A young pit bull by the name of Toby (name-holder) has been living the life ever since he can remember. The life of a stray dog that is. No one adopted him back at the pound and he's escaped the fate of euthanization. As many of you know pit bulls are subject to one of the worst prejudice of all dogs, if not the very worst. . Commonly misunderstood as lock-jaw, vicious, and cruel animals that maul children and other animals

Fan-fiction and Its Effect on LiteratureFan-fiction. Just that very phrase may elicit a groan out of some writers, yet other writers have embraced writing and reading fan-fiction. In any case, one must admit that the world of fan-fiction has greatly affected the world of literature and writing, whether a person holds it in favor or not.Fan-fiction and Its Effect on Literature2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This

F**k-ugly watermarks.I follow a lot of insanely talented artists here on DA, people whose work I look at in sheer awe and whose skill I can only dream of one day matching.F**k-ugly watermarks.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Unsurprisingly, that high quality of work leads to them either having their work ripped off or operating in fear of that happening. They, quite rightly, want to protect their art with a watermark, something which I'm not against at all.
What I am against, what I hate, is people using that god-awful DA watermark.
If you are a good artist: don't be a lazy git. Make your own watermark, use your own logo. You'll protect your work without doing it the disservice of having some automatically-generated arse-smear ruining it.
