Some thoughts on commissions from a commissioner.I commission art a lot. I've commissioned from many different artists all over the world. And after several years here are a few on my own personal thoughts on commissionsSome thoughts on commissions from a commissioner.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. List you prices.
- Whether its flat rates or by the hour, artists that commissions should list their rates. Most the time the old saying "If you have to ask, it probably costs to much." really comes into play here. I'm so much more likely to commission someone where I can gauge my budget. I myself am a single income family of five. That means I have a budget. A budget means I shop around. So that means when I am comparing artists if I know what I can spend with one and not the other, I'm more likely to go with the one I know I can budget.
2. List your customers.
- It is so much easier for a person to know where they stand when you have them listed.
2½. Update your customers.
- Most artists have an idea how long something is going to take. Now it's understandable that the idea isn't always acc
Need faces? We've already had "Need references?" and "Need textures?", time for something else. This actually is about references again, but about these more specified ones. Emotions. How many times have you wondered why is that the faces you draw look as empty as dead? Depicting moods can be a very hard task. Try sketching yourself (yes, a mirror would be a nice thing to have in this case), pull faces at diffrent angles, change light. And take a look at these below. The Handy Resources JournalThis journal will be a collection of images, articles, and guides that I've found handy for drawing. I hope you find them useful, too.The Handy Resources Journal2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Please note that this journal is a work in progress. I will add to it when I can and edit where needed.
Jeff-H has created a series of excellent guides for human anatomy. I recommend studying them.
The best piece of artistic advice I've been given when proportioning a human figure is this: The thigh area (from hip [not waist] to knee) is approximately the same length as the torso (hip to shoulder). I see so many humans drawn too short or too tall without the torso to match.
See how short the legs are? http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs50/i/2009/327/a/8/Anime_body_tutorial_pg3_by_lene_x.jpg
Still don't believe me? Bring your knee up to your shoulder and try to keep your back as straight as possible. It should reach about to your collarbone.
Character Design: An introductionCharacter Design: An introduction2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Arvalis-2012 by arvalis
What does 'Character Design' mean?
The character design is the process which comes after the characterisation and consists in defining the character through his/her physical appearance.
We need to consider a character as a little fictional creature, human or not, that aims to please its creator and the public as well.
While the basic characterization of this fictional creature (his tastes, his fears, his behaviors) may take a little mental effort, as it is a sort of list of emotions, facts and feelings that come and go in the life of a character, the process of visual realization of this creature may not be as simple. That's why many writers and characters creators prefer to rely on experienced hands.
Also many of the mental aspects of the character are not possible to gain by using 'static' visual medium. For 'static' I mean all the illustrations and drawings unable to tell a

I'm open for suggestions for what kind of tutorial/walk-through you'd like to see from me. If you're interested in anything, post your suggestions in the comments!

Being happy with your artI've noticed lately, that there's this emotion that leaves people overwhelmed with the massive amount of good art in the community, thinking that they can never become as good or popular as those others. So sad, because skill or popularity in itself shouldn't be the major goal of an art community. I think many people who start out here get so overwhelmed that they forget what it's actually about.Being happy with your art7 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Many people out here, sign up to DeviantArt (or any internet art community) in order to publish their work on the internet. They've probably looked around for a while already. They saw those amazing artists that had millions of pageviews, and secretly hoped that by putting their art on the internet, they would be able to do the same. To become madly popular -- a community icon.
Well, sorry to burst your bubble; but it's probably not gonna happen. And if it's gonna happen; it's not going to be soon.

Sometimes in youth we play crazy mind games. One gruesome game was trying to think of the worst way to die. Or even better, the "which would you choose" version of the same conceit. Another was what would be the worst torture to endure. If there is one international touchstone that best captures youthful fears and wonders in speculation of what lies beyond the veil of death and awaits as possible punishment for our sins, it must be - to the few who have actually read it to the millions who "know" it – "Dante's Inferno." Who does not shiver at the thought of being lost somewhere in the "Nine Rings of Hell?"

Artists have always feared that they are unappreciated and that the march of progress comes only from business, science and their machines. 1984 was imagined by an artist projecting these exact fears. Our guest essayist suggests the computer will never be our master, but only the super high speed counting machine it was meant to be leaving humans with only one pure task— being creative.

Notes on Character Design
I received the question pictured below at my tumblr blog. In case it's useful to anyone here, I decided to go ahead and use this otherwise dormant journal to share the article I put together in response.
Character design and drawing are tome-sized topics and even if I had all the answers (I don't - I have a lot to learn), I'm not sure I could communicate them effectively. Here are some thoughts an ideas that might help, though.
First, some general things...
Let some of that anxiety go. This isn't a hard science. There's no wrong way, no rigid process you must adhere to, no shoulds or shouldn'ts except those you designate for yourself. This is one of the fun parts of being an artist, really - have a heady good time with it.
See you Space Cowboy, Someday, Somewhere...Well, friends, the last 2 weeks have been phenomenal. I have just finished a glimpse into the lives of the 5 most remarkable characters: a cool bounty hunter, his tough gung-ho partner, their beautiful female companion, their brilliant/weird hacker kid, and their dog.See you Space Cowboy, Someday, Somewhere...5 years ago in Personal More Like This
I speak, of course, about Cowboy Bebop, which, ever since its debut in 1998, has astonished many both in & outside of the world of anime. The phenomenal actors who halped bring the show to the Western world have won much praise for their performances. The show's music has been reissued again & again and has been hailed far & wide as some of the best jazz compositions in yeara. But you already knew all that.
You probably also already know how the series' director, Shinchiro Watanabe, has ben hailed far & wide for managing to nail several diffrent genres of film distinctly together while maintaining an even flow throughout. And how the series composer, Yoko Kanno, created several songs that not only are excellent TV composi
