Finally finished!

This is for a Green Lantern redesign contest at Project Rooftop. [link] I'm not a huge Green Lantern fan but I really wanted to be a part of it. So I did a lot of research on John Stewart. I knew him best from Justice League and I can relate to his character more so than Hals. He's an analytical architect and former marine acting currently as an intergalactic law enforcement officer of the Green Lantern Corps. I tried to reflect that in the suit.

-Lightweight armor strengthened by the ring. Sufficient on its own.

-Logo on his shoulders because everything about him tells me so.

-Ring generated battle mask, because that's always useful.

I plan on redesigning Beast too, for fan art Friday.

I guess a different take on GL, not too different though. I liked Jim Lee’s take on GL, the uniform was organic and alien, that was really appealing to me. I thought about how being a ringbearer would have a symbiotic relationship and how more exposure to the ring would cause the uniform to adapt to its wearer. So in the beginning, it would be very alien-like from its last host and then would slowly change to suit its new host. It allows the ring to be a character onto itself, that it remembers its hosts. Its just a thought…

Redesign Contest, Green Lantern

Hal Jordan Redesign
Hal grew from an arrogant test pilot to a leader figure for the Green Lanterns of sector 2814. His design revolves around the theme of a pilot and a space cowboy. The costume of a military figure evokes a sense of respect and authority.

Mr. Pilot Eyebrows.

Sometimes my stuff leans toward semi-realism (last submission) and sometimes it looks cartoony, like this. Where's my freaking consistency?! :iconpapmingplz:

I feel real bad that I didn't consult the original design, like, at all... but I was pretty determined to create my own personal GL design - with the help of a couple of dA concepts that were floating around in my favorites. For instance, the whole green half thing came from this piece of awesome work from Zander Yurami and The Kid Lantern [link], while the idea of bringing a lot of emphasis to the ring hand came from this [link] (which is amazing and perfect and I wish I thought of it first and I tried real hard to keep myself from copying any aspect of it... though I really love the space camo idea... D: ohmygosh).

I'm sad because I forgot to make his badge glow. Actually I'm kind of sad that I forgot to make more of his costume glow in general. I always think of him as the ultimate nightlight, hence why Batman hates his guts. xD But at the same time I like this more militaristic, darker green scheme going on. Maybe he envelopes himself in an aura or something, like the way Stewart does it in the JL animated series.

I originally drew and colored a close-up of his face with his domino mask on to be included in this pic, but I really botched up his hair and only noticed at the last second, then I accidentally saved over the original, non-merged file. ;C Tears.

I definitely thought the offset badge thing was a cool idea. I felt like it brought about a policeman vibe, which is what the Corps essentially is in my eyes, albeit with a military/ambassador flair.

To explain the full mask idea, I never thought the domino mask was the greatest disguise, so during the small occasions where he has to deal with friends or the press, he has a more appropriate disguise to fall back on. That and he thinks he looks hardcore. <<; All in all, he's usually wearing the domino mask or not at all.

Do you all know who Olan Rogers is? Well, my Hal's personality has some traits based off of him, so to pay tribute I gave him Olan's amazing dimples.

:iconolanrogersplz:

As usual, I'm open for criticism regarding any design or anatomy issues, just don't judge the lineart itself. I know his left hand looks washed out. That's because I had to replace its colors at the last minute. >_o

And yes, I understand that the departure is quite drastic. I uh... hope it's not too bad.

Thanks for taking a quick look! <3

I was reading one of my an old issues of Wizard Magazine (If you know what that is, then like me, you have no life what so ever either) and in it was this feature where they took DC characters and updated them in the Marvel Ultimate style. It was really cool, and so I wanted to try and do the same for kicks, redesigning my favorite Justice Leaguers.

I just didn't drawing the characters, I really tried to put so,e thought in the redesigns, some of them came out really successful to me and some I borrowed too heavily from the concepts in the Wizard mag.

Superman is like my 2nd favorite out of the line up, no cape, gold shield in the front. Everybody knows that the S symbol is actually Superman's Kryptonian family's crest, but if you ever read old Superman comics from 60s and 70s, his costume was actually described as being common dress for Kryptonians, seeing Superman in his blue tights and red cape was like seeing some dude in a business suit, and so that concept is what I had in mind. I wanted his costume to like very alien or futuristic, that you can tell he is from another world.

Batman is very high tech, metal gear solid like, but the main thing is his mask completely conceals his face. I know it's very Casandra Cain, but I think it works much better on a full grown man than a 16 year old girl in what it's meant to do, invoke fear. My concept was that this Batman here is trying to give the illusion that he is something otherworldly. When you first meet this Batman, you don't see that high tech suit underneath the cape, you see this weird black thing with pointy ears and no face, and if you a dumb criminal, you piss your pants because you have no IDEA what this is coming after you.

Wonder Woman is not much of a big change from the original design. I view Wonder Woman as DC's equivalent of Thor, I mean let's look at it, both are super strong warrior heirs to a royal family that reigns over a race of mythological beings, both have mystical weapons and both have long beautiful hair, and so with her, I wanted to make her more majestic and mystical, like a warrior lost in time. Wonder Woman is the toughest fighter on the League, and so I wanted to convey that with this design, but the major change is her weapon of choice. It's looks like a staff now, but that is the Golden Lasso, in this concept, the lasso has shape-shifting abilities, turning into a wide arrange of weapons for what ever the situation.

The Flash, I admit, I borrowed a little too much from the magazine. Mainly I wanted him to look fast as hell, so it costume kinda resembles a race car driver, especially with the helmet, which I love. I think I made him too small however, like Spider-man small. It makes him look really young.

The Green Lantern was the hardest to conceptualize and honestly not one of my favs. I wanted to convey the raw power that comes with being a green lantern, you have a weapon on your finger that allows you to create ANYTHING you can think of, so I wanted my GL to look godly, omnipotent. I went with the universal void costume, like he looks like a walking black hole, and inside is this green nebula cloud that forms the GL symbol. This cloud is meant to represent his will power, and the stronger his will grows, the brighter the cloud gets. Oh and he is a human, that's suppose to be Hal.

Green Arrow is my 3rd fav. I feel like Green Arrow is the most realistic out of all these heroes, and so with him I gave GA the most realistic costume. Unlike Batman, who owns shit that doesn't exist, Green Arrow costume is made to look like it was made from material from an Army Surplus store.

And Finally, the little alien at the end is the Martian Manhunter. This is my number one favorite and I completely stole it from Wizard. In the wizard mag, their take on J'onn was basically E.t. painted green, but I love that idea so much that hear I did my own version of that concept. Judging by his size, it's safe to say that this Martian isn't super strong, but he still has all the mental powers, but upgraded to a Prof. X wearing Cerebro level. He talks telepathically, but that weird sac on what I guess is his face is his mouth. he only opens his mouth to eat and it opens sideways, with a little tentacles tongue reaching out to grab cookies. It's quite disturbing.

And so with that, here's my DC Remix. I plan on doing more characters, but first tell me what you think of this line up

I would also like to add that this is FAN ARTWORK and was solely done for amusement and in no means is meant to infringe on DC Comics and its characters

Redesign Contest, Green Lantern

Kyle Rayner Redesign
Making Kyle young looking, more fun loving and implusive and flamboyant. Kyle being an artist therefore I gave him a more casual, fashionable, hippier and light-weigh design, while still retaining the essense of the original costume design that made him stand out from the rest of the Corps.

full download is huge, but totally worth it.

The latest in my dc characters redesign series, going from right to left we have green arrow, black canary, hawkgirl, huntress, supergirl, aquaman, green lantern, superman, martian manhunter in the back, wonder woman, batman, the flash, power girl , wonder girl , doctor fate, speedy, and cyborg on the far left... This will all eventually be stylized and hand illustrated one day when I have the time, but for now expect some oddities in the appearances. Mainly this is for concept, not artistic purposes.

ok so working back left to right here is the rationale behind the designs

Cyborg- I wanted someone that looked tough, athletic, and more grown than vic usually gets treated. So I went with tyrese gibson. the tech is supposed to look futuristic in some ways but purely prosthetic in others. experiemental combat prosthetics. that was the approach, so i kind of mismoshed iron man, robocop, and mechwarrior around in my head to get this.

speedy - I wanted to go with Mia as soon as i decided to put speedy in there. So considering mias style of movement in conjunction with her strengths and weak points i came up with this. a sleek, yet protective and flexible costume that is sexy, but shows very little skin at the same time... her hood still needs work

Dr Fate- I wanted spooky, ancient, mystic, crossed with hero... I think i managed it.

Wonder girl- no longer looks like a texas street walker. yay! I just wanted to make a blonde look like the daughter of Zeus. So yeah i made her costume less modern, more amazonian. I like it that way

power girl- an older alternate reality super girl whose whole original world looked like it would fit in at a roller disco. So i made her design reflect a retro vibe, reflection of what supergirl could have grown into.

flash - super speed needs areodynamics + eye protection + crash protection... Personally I would like to see him kind of like neil patrick harris under the suit.

see my big three individually for the reasons for them.

so after skipping bats ww and supes, we get to...

Green lantern - hal jordan. I wanted mature fighter pilot who would still have the right attitude... so he's kind of a mix between nathon fillion, david boreanaz, and john hamm. for the suit I kept coming back to the thought of power. powering up, emitting power, etc... and for some reason it made me think of tron, and a futuristic flight suit rolled together... this was the result.

Aquaman- Atlantean prince...pure simple.

supergirl - see my philosophy on supes and then feminize it.

huntress- sexy, catholic, night, rosario dawson... and daughter of a mobster. also considered were ease of movement and protection.

hawkgirl - ancient egyptian inspired alien tech

black canary - pink as a biker chick

green arrow - night vision first off, cause he mainly works at night, but i wanted high tech unobstructed night vision... so i designed some glasses. then I went crazy on the whole premise of modern robin hood.

btw just found this. find it interesting.

Quick collage of some of my DC character redesigns. Colors are far from finished. I'll probably never get around to finishing it, though. Yes, I know, Batman's face is kinda foik'd up. :)

Here's the last one to finish out the set - Green Lantern. I've always liked the simplicity of John Stewart's GL costume, so I kept this one fairly simple, too.

I might do a group shot of these together at a later date...not sure though. Thanks for watching!
