dear dA: age is irrelevantthis recent deviantart poll "At what age does an artist have the most artistic freedom?" is a condescending and narrow-minded question.dear dA: age is irrelevant3 years ago in Personal More Like This
often i see people have opinions about age and how it relates to art. some say that they are too young or too old to do one thing or the other.
well, i have not been on this planet very long, i can't speak for everyone and everyone's circumstances are different. but i will say this.
you are alive. and since you are, there is nothing that can stop you from your freedom to express yourself through art or anything that you have a passion for - especially your age.
don't let anyone's preconceived notions about your social status stop you from doing something that is so much bigger.
a blank canvas doesn't care how old you are, where you came from or what inspires you. you will always be able to fill it with what inspires you no matter what.

Getting started with needle feltingEDIT 7/4/12: Added a couple of additional sources for wool.Getting started with needle felting2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'll probably add more to this later. This is various bits of info about needle felting, and my favorite shops for supplies. They're all in the US though, I really don't know where to get supplies outside the US. Some will ship internationally, though.
Here's what I'd recommend to get started felting: The most important tool would be a good felting needle. I haven't seen the better needles or good wool in craft stores, so you'll have to go to a specialty store or order online. I got some needles from Michael's because they were cheap, but they don't have very many barbs so I don't generally use them now. "Star" needles are my favorite, because they have more sides and more barbs to catch the wool. You don't really need multiple sizes to get started, but you might get at least one spare needle. They do break sometimes. (I'm special, I hit my wire armatures all the time with no problem, but I've broken all sizes of needles on ey

SERIOUSLY ONLY 3. If you don't have your entry in yet, I really suggest you start working on it now, because if you leave it to the last day, you'll find that you don't have time for it, and your chance of getting 600 and more is gone .A.
also, there is no need to ask "May I join?" Please look at pervious comments, I keep saying "Yes, Anyone can join." It's getting a bit repetitive now

Appreciate Voice Overs and AnimatorsMarcia Wallace (Voice of The Simpsons Mrs. Krabappel) passed away and it's been a stark reminder to appreciate those who bring your favorite cartoons to life.Appreciate Voice Overs and Animators1 year ago in Personal More Like This
When we watch a cartoon, you don't really think about the people who voice them. They're just there. They don't seem to have age or a mortality to them. In our minds we tend to think of cartoons as immortal. You can drop an anvil on them and they just keep going. Unfortunately, those who give them life, through voice acting and animation, do not. Something to consider when watching any cartoon. Enjoy them, appreciate them. More importantly appreciate the talents behind them. They wont be around forever. (Myself included unfortunately) Stupid mortality.

Let's face it, drawing is hard. Especially for a beginner, learning to draw seem dauntingly challenging. Even more experienced artists have it hard and I'm not anyway different from that. At the same time, weirdly enough, drawing is surprisingly simple and straightforward thing to do. But that's when you know what you are doing.
In fact, drawing is probably hard for you just because you don't know how it's done. And if you ask an artist how it's done, you will likely get rather vague answer. They know how to do it, but they don't know how to explain it for you. Drawing is full of concepts that simply don't translate well for an average Joe. Also, even if a great artists gives you a tip how to draw something, you probably still have troubles at executing it. You just don't see things the way the artist does., so you might even end up using the tip wrong, but believing in it so hard that you can't correct yourself. Not to mention the actu

Concept vs Visual AestheticRecently, on my piece I got into an interesting discussion that I find would be of importance to some of my watchers, despite the person being helpless in said discussion and just looking to waste their time.Concept vs Visual Aesthetic8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Basically, I encountered yet another person who cannot grasp the difference between concept and visual aesthetic, and is quick to brand any widespread concept as similar to some popular piece of media that utilized such a concept.
I personally define visual aesthetic in concept art as series of image elements, art techniques and stylistic patterns that unify an array of objects in art into a single, wholesome, stand-out microcosm which is recognized by these elements. It's what allows us to relate a piece of art to a certain time period ("that's so 80's!"), a culture ("typically oriental stuff!") or movement ("absolutely baroque!").
A concept, on the other hand, is a concept – an idea made into flesh. The concept might have a definitive visual aesthe

DA's Insular Taste PhenomenonIt's been quite a while since I wrote a preachy "THINK ABOUT YO' ART"-type journal, and some of my newer watchers may not know that this is a particular(ly annoying) habit of mine. This is a subject I've had on my mind for quite some time for a number of reasons, and it's recently coalesced into a semi-soluble form so here we go. (As an aside- this journal does have some recycled ideas from a previous post of mine, but obviously I hadn't really said everything I wanted to on the subject.)DA's Insular Taste Phenomenon3 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's no mystery that I love this website. I came in at the tail end of the pre-critique wonder years, when the internet discovered and exploited that, yes, we don't always produce the highest quality art here. There's a lot of unpleasantness directed towards DeviantArt. At RISD, I made a point to never mention that I had an account here, because of the looks of disgust I would get haha and people would think about me differently. It was

So a few friends have been asking me lately what I've got against this inexplicably popular series that seems to have popped up recently called Axis Powers Hetalia. They love it... and I HATE it. Hate it hate it hate it!!! But the mere fact that it fills me with boiling rage everytime I think about it is not a good enough reason for them, so I guess I'll try to piece together why it pisses me off so very much. -I'm- not even entirely sure why I d
What's that brush ?A lot of people ask about what kind of brush we use to get that pastely, textured, gouache- like quality for quite some time. Since it is kind of a hassle to create a tutorial for this, (we have to use MS paint to make/edit something like this, no lie), we could explain in more simpler terms. Follow the instructions carefully! What's that brush ?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
We primarily use Photoshop CS3 for this, but it probably doesn't matter what version of Photoshop you use, I believe.
Go under the brush menu (the one that looks like a filing folder), and click Dry Media Brushes to use as your main brush, otherwise known as the Brush Tip Shape .
Click on Number 63 or 36 brush for the Brush Tip Shape.
Now, go under the Dual Brush setting, and choose Number 49 brush .
Go under the Spacing setting under the Dual Brush, and adjust the spacing a tad bit so you can get some of that fuzzy/ grainy texture.
Finally, go to the other Dynamics setting, and put

Yeah, it was back in the day when we all watched those goofy and wacky Saturday morning cartoons and specials on ABC, NBC what have you, the good old days of the 90's...all the good cartoons where on like Sonic, 2 Stupid Dogs, and Tom and Jerry Kids...wait what?
But what about the old original Tom and Jerry 'toons, the ones that really made their mark on animation history? Oh theres more apparently...we're talking A Pup Named Scooby Doo, Flintstone Kids, Muppet Babies, Tiny Toon Adventures and more (I'm sure of it). Yup, revamped for the 90's, is what is was all about back then...why show the originals when you can make more money off of a brand new younger audience...although some of these 'toons came and went in the 80's yet some survived through to the 90's. Hanna-Barbera seemed to take on most of these reboots of older cartoons, and I really don't know why...maybe its a Turner thing. But hey, this rev

I was hanging out with Evin(my rl galfran) earlier today, so i was wearing a cutie patootie dress...because I like to do that when I'm with her.
Rough doodle of what I looked like >> http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h199/plutogurl_2006/panera1.png
Not gonna lie. I was pretty cute.
So I drop Evin off at home and on the way back I think, "Wow... I'm hungry for some Panera", So I drive into the Panera parking lot and nab a good parking spot.
I get out of the car and started heading towards the entrance when I see this hot piece of meat heading towards the door too.
So yeah... In my head I'm like "Hot daaaamnnn"
Of course we get to the door at the same time, and he holds it open for me and I'm like "thank youuuuuuuu *//w//*;;;"
at this point I can already feel my awkwardness pouring in.
I can feel my self forgetting how to walk... forgetting how to talk. Little mini-panic starting.

For those of you with a compulsion to message artists all of the time, I decided to compile a list of all the ways you can be sure that any new people you decide to talk to will block you as quickly as possible! These tips will help you keep a neat and tidy buddy-list.
1: Don't bother ever actually liking/favoriting/commenting/critiquing any of their work. Don't PM them or strike up a conversation on their main page. This might make them feel like you have common ground with them. Heck, they might even be comfortable around you. No, you must strike without them ever actually having an inkling of who you are and bombard their instant messenger without warning.
2: Find an artist who doesn't update more than once a week. This means they have a busy schedule and have little patien
