11 Things I Love About dAdeviantART has served us for 11 years already and, no matter when we joined, it definitely changed something for every one of us. Some of us have found friends, others received inspiration to create or improve their skills, or experienced changes in many different personal aspects as well.11 Things I Love About dA3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So why don't we take a moment for dA's 11th birthday to write a list of 11 things we love about dA? How did it help us? Did it make us grow as artists? Is it fun? What did it get you addicted to?
Your entry can be sincere and profound, as well as silly and fun - it's up to you!
You can only submit one entry, and you have an entire week to submit your list to Contests > 2011 > 11th Birthday Contests > 11 Things I Love about dA. This gallery will be closed on the 7th of August 2011 11:59pm (PDT) and we'll be rewarding the best entries in the after-party!

If you’re a follower of devBUG, you already have some familiarity with Stash -- the name we’ve given to the revamp of deviantART’s exisiting submission process.
However, Stash is so much more than a simple revamp. Your Stash on deviantART will become home to all your images, writing... everything! Here's how it works:
You can drag and drop multiple files into your Stash, quickly and easily.
However, those files won’t appear in your Gallery, or to your Watchers, until you specifically say so. Allowing you an easy place to storage images until you’re ready to publish

A mere eleven years ago, deviantART met its humble beginnings. Since that time, we've grown to be the world's largest online art community, but even a site as massive and established as deviantART had to start somewhere. We never forget those few small sparks that launched deviantART to be where it is today, and that's what we're celebrating during our birthday season.
For this year's community event, we're embracing the idea of starting small and creating something amazing from just a few quick sketches. We've started this work for you and challenge you to finish it with the pizzazz that only the best art community in the world co

What Do You See?
Challenge: Take a look at one of these four photographs.
Then simply show us what you see! But here's the catch - it MUST be dA related!
Here is an example I did:
Rules and Guidelines
The deviation should be dA themed, as this is a birthday contest! For example, you may wish to include Fella, popular emotes, llamas, ninjas etc
You may NOT use the image directly.
Whichever shapes you see in the stock images should be translated as closely as possible in your finished piece. For example, the mountain in my example is the same shape as the wallpaper rip.
Please link to the stock image used and say what part of your image it's used in. For example I used the shape of the wallpa

A dA birthday Contest
About the contest [Bullet; Blue][Bullet; Blue]
To celebrate dA's 11th birthday your community volunteers team is organizing a devious contest! The idea is easy: 11 years of dAvolution
11 years of evolution of deviantArt, of new features, epic moments, changes, incredible celebrations, projects, contests, etc.
Many of us did just enjoyed a little part of this 11 years, but we all know there's been huge changes, big events we'll never forget, new features that change our experience as deviants, and, to summarize, things that make this site evolve to what is today.
Your duty: represent this dAvolution, represent the event(s) or changes you think that really had a huge impact on deviantArt and deviants.
The participants will be able to use whatever

THE FASTEST CONTEST SINCE THE UNIVERSE BEGAN!
(AKA the "Pick A Theme For September" Mini-Contest)
The color-me-club is wrapping up the coloring portion of the August Contest. But before it ends, we need to know what's next for September! That's when you come in. We need you to recommend a theme for the September lineart contest.
Simply comment either in this news article or this poll: http://color-me-club.deviantart.com/journal/poll/2241302/
In the comment, state the theme. If you want, feel free to include a short (short!) description of why you think it's a great theme, and why it would generate lots and lots of contest entries.

The August 'Ice Cream' Coloring Contest
It's that time again. Courtesy of the #color-me-club, another contest is being held, and it is open to the entire dA community! Last month, we held a lineart contest for the theme 'Ice Cream.' A winner was chosen, and now the winning two linearts will be the subject of this month's coloring contest!
You read that right. We're changing it up a bit this month, and extending the opportunity to select one of two linearts. Or, if you want, you can select both sets of lineart and participate twice!
HOW IT WORKS:
The contest is simple. Take any (or both if you feel dangerous) of the lines above, download the full resolution, print it off, or open it
Try Something New! - Photomanipulation.Okay, we're going to try something new here to get people designing and trying out new things (hence the title). This will either be a bi-monthly or trimester challenge, depending on how well it is received.Try Something New! - Photomanipulation.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time, your challenge is to use one of the tutorials in our Photomanipulation folder to create your own manipulation:
(There are more great photomanipulation tutorials in our gallery, and these four were only selected to get you started).
So why not give it a go? There is not set theme, so literally all you have to do is create a photomanipulation. Any manipulation which you create from now until our next "Try Something New!" will be featured here, so really it's a win-win situation. You get to try a new art style, and you get a free feature!

When Being Human Just Isn't Enough:icontechgnotic:When Being Human Just Isn't Enough3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The allure of Anthro Art is obvious to anyone who ever “owned” and loved a pet. (Only those who have never loved and shared lives with a pet speak of pet “ownership”!) Once a bond has been formed between a human and an animal the rigid distinctions between what is human and what is animal begin to fracture.
The definition of “being” becomes suddenly far more expansive. And soon the bonded human begins feeling spiritual affinities with the “animal” that are undeniably powerful and as “real” as any felt with other humans. The desire to leave all the lies and hypocrisies of human society behind and join in with a simpler and somehow more “honest” society of different beings in nature can become palpable and intense. “The grass is always greener…” and, oh!, to scamper across it on four liberating paws!
Notes to aspiring photographers 4Capturing subjects in motion.Notes to aspiring photographers 42 years ago in Personal More Like This
Ten random tips for getting better results with 'action' photography.
1. If your subject is moving and your intention is that the subject is sharp in your picture, putting the camera on a tripod is a bad idea.
2. There are only two ways to capture a moving target; panning/following the subject, and maximising shutter speed. (Using flash is essentially the same as raising the shutter speed.)
3. If you use flash to arrest movement, make sure that the contribution from the flash is significantly greater than ambient light, and don't try to use shutter speed AND flash at the same time or you'll run into synchronisation problems.
4. Blurry can be beautiful, so don't delete 'failures' in camera. They may be buried treasure when you see them full size.
5. When you are panning to freeze a subject, make sure you 'follow through' like a golf stroke, and make sure your stance is comfortable.
6. Panning/tracking at low shutter speeds will give

Unrealistic expectations for the aspiring photographer in a retouched society
tldr - the cake is a lie
Let me say first of all that I am a great admirer of photography retouchers. For good or for bad, it has never failed to astound me the extent to which a retoucher may alter the most subtle to the most obvious aspects of a photo and then re-present the manipulated image as a readily believable and acceptable depiction of reality.
Today one of the photographers I follow released a behind the scenes look and before and after post-editing/retouching comparison of one of her photos. I only discovered this photographer a short time ago but definitely admired her attention to detail and aspired to someday be able to also achieve such clean style and high standards so I was excited to see how she achieved her final photo. I expected some color and contrast touch ups, maybe a little skin smoothening here and ther
