Pro-Choice Except When I Want to Choose For HerAll righty, Damey's here to give up some motherfuckin' truths.Pro-Choice Except When I Want to Choose For Her1 year ago in Personal More Like This
We may not always like what people do but that doesn't mean we have the right to tell them what to do and make them do it.
Pro-choice means you respect bodily autonomy. Bodily autonomy means you are independent and are not controlled by anyone else. Nobody can use or invade or harm your body without your consent.
This includes fetuses.
If a fetus is a person, there is no human right that demands a pregnant person to house it. There is no human right that says you owe another your body for their life. This is common sense. People need organs and blood all the time, but it is not against the law for me to decide not to give. People are dying every day, every single day, because of lack of blood, serum, organs, plasma, bone marrow, and people aren't stepping up to donate, and it's not illegal for them to choose not to. People died today in the thousands. Do they have a right to life? Yes. Do they have such a right to life they
What YOU Can DoWhat is something that anti-choicers are notorious for? Something that can help our cause as well, if utilized correctly? Posters and Pamphlets of course! I'm sure each and every one of us is all too aware of anti-choicers abuse of this method - plastering manipulative, inaccurate, and out right terrifying images paired with ridiculous and offensive slogans all over for the public eye to see. What YOU Can Do2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well, we don't want to do that. Let's not scare the children and the elderly, here - but they do have the right idea. Do you think all of these abominable laws would get passed if they sat there in their homes and whispered "I don't like this" to one another? Just think about it, spreading the word (even if 'the word' happens to be a poorly photoshopped lie) works. Look at the KONY 2012 scam, for example, it became huge - because you couldn't bat an eye without a poster showing up.
So I say it's time we get with the times and get out there. We've got to be loud, we've got to be heard, we've
Voice for ChoicePayback Is a Bitch for Abortion Clinic Protestors, Thanks to a Brilliant LandlordVoice for Choice2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Todd Stave has the unenviable position of being the landlord of a building in Germantown, Maryland, which he leases to an abortion provider called Reproductive Health Services Clinic. So he knows a little something about dealing patiently with anti-abortion protesters. But when they started calling him at home at all hours and harassing his family, he got fed up and came up with a very clever solution: Do unto others as they have been doing unto you.
Problems really began for Stave at the end of 2010, when he leased his building to LeRoy Carhart, one of the only doctors in the U.S. who openly acknowledges that he performs late-term abortions. As you can imagine, he’s a controversial man, and protesters come from far and wide. There is a constant group of them parked outside, praying an

This is no 'I wish I'd never been born' howl of angst. I love my mother, and having an abortion would have given her a better life.
If there is one thing that anti-choice activists do that makes me see red, it is when they parade out their poster children: men, women and children who were "targeted for abortion". They tell us "these people would not be alive today if abortion had been legal or if their mothers had made a different choice".
In the last couple of months, I have read two of these abortion deliverance stories that have been particularly offensive. The first story is one propagated by Rebecca Kiessling, the poster child for the no exceptions in cases of rape or incest. On her website Kiessling s

Having grown up Baptist in Alabama, I've always been cynical about conservative Christians' fervent opposition to Roe v. Wade. I don't doubt that religious devotion can lead to skepticism -- even fierce criticism -- of abortion rights. But those same religious principles should lead to efforts to boost the prospects for children, especially poor children, once they are born.
Apparently, the religious fervor that opposes abortion subsides considerably after children come squirming from the womb; it fails to wonder whether they have a chance at a decent life. That helps explain why the class divide in the United States is stark -- and only growing more so.
Over the last several months, the rabid anti-choice faction has posted several victories, passing laws that erode a woman's right to manage her reproductive life. Last week, Geo

Inflammatory anti-choice propaganda? Lies about sexuality? We need to keep in mind what goes on in many Christian schools when we discuss vouchers.
School vouchers have long been a pet cause of Christian school advocates who want to shore up profits and increase their ranks. In 2002, the United States Supreme Court ruled that public funds designated for private school tuition were not an infringement on church/state separation. That gave private Christian school advocates a green light to promote vouchers for themselves.
Though vouchers have beco
Tiny Rant. . . . .I'm so sick of hearing about this issue of abortion. It's needlessly complicated. The way I look at it is this: If you don't approve of abortion, then don't have one.Tiny Rant. . . . .2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I honestly try to look at the arguments from the pro-life point of view, but none of them make any sense to me.
What if the aborted fetus could have cured cancer? What if the aborted fetus could have become a serial killer?
Life begins at conception, and abortion is murder. If so, then why aren't you out there screaming about fertilized eggs used for in vitro fertilization being thrown away is murder?
It's dangerous! Abortion done right has a higher survival rate than going through with a pregnancy does, and making abortion illegal would only force women to undergo even more dangerous procedures.
I'm just sick of it. So here's my advice, because I'm cranky.
Stop being arrogant. Stop telling people how they should live their lives up to YOUR standards. Stop prea

You know those "crisis pregnancy centers" that set up shop near abortion clinics, pretending to offer "options"? Turns out they won't just terrify you into having the baby; they'll terrify you into handing it over to them.
Kathryn Joyce, author of Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, writes in The Nation:
"While there is growing awareness of how CPCs hinder abortion access, the centers have a broader agenda that is less well known: they seek not only to induce women to "choose life" but to choose adoption, either by offering adoption services themselves... or by referring women to Christian adoption agencies. Far more than other adoption agencies, conservative Christian agencies demonstrate a p
If your parents wanted to abort you...This isn't a news related journal, so I apologize if you look forward to those. But this is a thought provoking journal inspired by a commonly asked question of the Anti-Choicers.If your parents wanted to abort you...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
One of the Anti-Choicers favorite lines are "What if your mother had aborted you?" and there is only one answer to that - nothing. If your mother had aborted you, you wouldn't exist to be capable of having an opinion on the matter, simple as that.
But another, similar, question often asked is "what if your parents considered aborting you" and that is what this journal is about. How would you feel if you knew your parents considered aborting you, but were talked out of it by an Anti-Choicer:
-because they weren't financially ready for a child
-because they weren't emotionally ready for a child
-because they were raped
-because of a risky pregnancy
-because you had crippling medical issues
-put you into foster care/up for adoption
-died because you weren't aborted

Guest Post: A Doctor on Transvaginal Ultrasounds
Where Is The Physician Outrage?
I’m speaking, of course, about the required-transvaginal-ultrasound thing that seems to be the flavor-of-the-month in politics.
I do not care what your personal politics are. I think we can all agree that my right to swing my fist ends where your face begins.
I do not feel that it is reactionary or even inaccurate to describe an unwanted, non-indicated transvaginal ultrasound as “rape”. If I insert ANY object into ANY orifice without informed consent, it is rape. And coercion of any kind negates consent, informed or otherwise.
In all of the discussion and all of the outrage and all of the Doonesbury comics, I find it interesting that we physicians are relatively silent.
After all, it’s our hands that
