Creative Near-Sightedness. Do you have it?Thanks to a brief comment recently made by a friend, it spurred me into coining the phrase 'Creative Near-Sightedness' to describe something I've battled with and continue to battle with, throughout my journey. I hope that this might make some sense to others out there and shed some similar light on your situation like it has mine.Creative Near-Sightedness. Do you have it?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I have achieved some of the big goals I've set myself in life, but have always had trouble with achieving some of the more creative goals, due to the fact that, they are often rather ambiguous to begin with, for example:
How do you quantify / visualize a goal like 'I want to be a good artist' when being good is completely relative?
So firstly I want to break it down into a couple of things that might seem simple commonsense, but in my case something I need to constantly remind myself of:
The first thing is: Keep the major goal clear and simple!
Something you can understand and describe to someone simply when they ask you 'but what actually is it?'

This topic is about rates and wages that an artist should start to consider when taking on a new job. This is my advice, so take this as advice.
So let’s begin. As an artist you should know right away that you are valuable. You can recreate people’s imagination and ideas into reality. You are the one who brings people together to be able to all see the vision for the final product. This is valuable. Keep this in mind when you take new jobs. Think about how many hours you plan on slaving over iteration after iteration. Because even though you may have a voice, if you agree to whatever the arrangement are, you must live up to their standards. So make sure you are paid well.
Imagine a client asks you to do 50 hours of work for only $500 dollars. That’s $10 an hour. That is not enough. You can go get a job that could pay you as much if not more, without being an artist. I’ve seen people’s salaries as low as 30k a year. This is not acc

Fan Art Law
Mon Sep 10, 2012 by techgnotic
t seems there’s nothing quite as dear to the hearts of many of our deviants as their production of fan art, and at the same time, there is nothing so knotted with legal and ethical headaches. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the form of fan art it has also become one of the most frustratingly complicated. At some point, the sheer volume of fan art around a single property may become so large that the issue rises to another level of scrutiny by the creators of the original work.
With this dynamic in mind, we thought the following panel that Josh Wattles, our Advisor In Chief here at deviantART, and a mystery guest named Harold Smith, gave at Comic Con this year might be of immense help in understanding the ever evolving elements of fan art

Daily Deviations: How to SuggestI constantly find that many deviants, new and otherwise, simply do not know how to suggest a Daily Deviation.Daily Deviations: How to Suggest7 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Just to make sure we are all on the same page here:
Info to Know
The only rule applied to Daily Deviations is that a deviant may not receive more than one Daily Deviation within a period of three months.
All deviants, regardless of popularity, are eligible to receive Daily Deviations.
Popular deviants are still deviants and will not be disqualified on the mere charge of being popular from receiving a Daily Deviation.
Any deviation may possibly receive a Daily Deviation.
This is regardless of the amount of views or favorites it has garnered.
You are ALLOWED to suggest YOURSELF. Just don't abuse this.
The following are not rules on how to suggest Daily Deviations but rather guidelines that help staff capable to select Daily Deviations better and more quickly process suggestions.

Living Rainbow Taking Flight
The vibrant digital paintings of alicexz are fiery, emotional, and incredibly memorable.
The colors of her creations (mostly portraits of popular TV and Film characters) are unusually vibrant, which is remarkable considering how layered they appear to be. It’s sort of like what manga characters might look like if painted by one of the Dutch Masters. And this artist exhibits just the right amount of quirkiness to leave us wanting to know more: she has a penchant for painting redheads. But, then of course, there’s a lot of red and golden fire burning through most her artworks.

My DD GuidelinesAs most of you probably know by now, I'm one of the Literature CVs responsible for featuring literature DDs a few times a week. Exciting? I think so! Of course, there are a couple of things you should know about suggesting DDs to me before you do, just to keep everything running smooth and give that piece you want to see featured the best chance it's got at being picked. My DD Guidelines2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
Why Should You Suggest DDs?
Because it feels good to spread community spirit! No, really, it does. But honestly, sharing art you appreciate with others for a chance to be featured and loved is fantastic. It shows that you appreciate their work and are interested in promoting community spirit, as well. And, hey, who doesn't love to do that? Also, you never know! Good karma could come your way. After all, you the community are who help us scout DDs, so it's up to you to help us find spectacular literature and bring it out of the shadows!

Colorists: Having Difficulty Finding A Skintone? This happens to me all the time.Colorists: Having Difficulty Finding A Skintone?3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I'm starting out an image, and for the life of me, I just cannot determine what color I should use for the skintone. I wish I had a crystal ball that would show me thirty minutes into the future so I can see just how a character will look after applying all the necessary shading, anatomical detailing, and highlights based upon the base color I use. A lot of times, it'll appear too faint, too desaturated, or on the flip side, way too bold and gleaming like a bronzed deity caked in a thick lathering of walrus grease.
Which is delicious, by the way.
FORTUNATELY! The folks at The Humanae Tumblr seemed to have a crystal ball of their own. Not so much one that shows the final product of my work, but one that certainly told them of my many incredibly frustrating endeavors into spending a good chunk of time shading a character's skin only to realize the base tone was absolute g

(Please note, I'm not necessarily talking about deviantart's critique system, though this certainly applies to it. I'm talking about all feedback, whether in comments or notes, in person, or on another site. Deviantart simply has a good format for others to leave feedback to an artist.)
In art school, you tend two get two different types of young artists: people who are infatuated with their work, and people who have no confidence in it at all. But really, it all boils down to the same thing: as artists, we are incredibly reliant on other people's judgement of our work for our self-esteem. It sounds a bit stupid, but I don't know that I've talked to any serious business artists who say otherwise (though if you do, please tell me). Artists often view their work as an extension of themselves, or their soul, poured out on paper. We seek other people's approval, b

I’m writing this article for the type of people who say that just can’t find motivation to:
Make a portfolio
Finish a painting
Work on their personal project
I got three tips I’m about to write, and it’s just advice and things that I found useful for myself. If you are capable to do any of these things you should definitely try them.
Fear. Get rid of it. If you are fearful of the outcome it will unmotivate you immediately. Just finish whatever it is and think about how you can improve after. If you can’t see what you need to improve ask someone else to tell you. There is always room to improve, and if you go into a critique with an open mind you will grow exponentially.
Think of it like this. If you were running one lap, and half way through you stopped because you were afraid you were going to throw up or pass out, you will never really know how fast you can run that lap. You didn’t push yours
