Only a week left till the "Norouz" celebration in Persia.. each year we're celebrating the first of spring as the first day of our new year..
so happy Norouz to you all ..

Many, still are not listing mediums in their comments on their work. You will be getting a link to read regarding this. We really hate declining work for such a silly thing but we can't keep asking each and every one what they used. May I remind you that we are nearly 9,000 members. You can imagine the time it takes for us admins.
Also, because the "asking" process may take too long, the works with a listed medium are being accepted faster..
So listing mediums means your artwork will get into our gallery faster than others!
We have also decided to change the Mentors Corner and critique folder a little bit. We've noticed that there are less and less submission to the critique folder. Maybe some don't realize it is there, others may notice that there are n

Approximately 800,000 suicide deaths occur every year around the world. That means someone dies from suicide somewhere in the world every 40 seconds.1 Globally, the incidence of suicide among males is nearly twice that of females.1 In the United States, 1 out of every 5 adults will have a diagnosable mental health concern at some point during their lives.2 A similar statistic is not available for global mental health. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that mental illness is a sizable burden on our planet, and it is one that receives low priority and few resources for treating and/or preventing it. Did you know that, in 85 countries, there is only, at best, 1 psychiatrist for every 100,000 people? It's time to make the world start paying attention to mental health concerns. Think globally, act locally: What better place to start than DeviantArt?
Mental illness can be like a dark night of the soul, where it's hard not to lose hope of ever seeing t

Vance's storyYea I made a short background story of my OC VanceVance's story4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Thanks to CookieZoela, she fixed my awful grammar ;u;
Even at the age of 9 Vance didn't really have an interest in becoming a Pokémon trainer as a matter of fact he didn't even quite like Pokémon as he only cared about playing outside like a typical kid.
One day though Vance asked his dad if he wanted to have a trip, just him, his mom and his dad without bringing their Pokémon with them because he thought that his dad, being a Pokémon ranger and his mom a Pokémon breeder, spent too much of their time with them instead of being with him.
Vance did have a point though for his dad owned a very loyal young treecko, and it refused leave his dad's side, that alone showed how his dad put too much of his passion and interest in his Pokémon. They even had a hard time leaving his father's treecko behind but eventually his dad managed to ask treecko to patiently wait for him as they would only be gone just f
Creating a Beautiful Fractal ImageThere are so many beautiful fractal images in the art world...Creating a Beautiful Fractal Image2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
...and the ones here at Deviant Art are no exception! The images are as diverse as each person who creates it. I am a lay-person on the subject when it comes to explaining the art itself. Simply put...fractals are based on Mathematical Equations. The how and the why of this explanation still eludes me, but the beauty of the images keep my creating them. For information about the underlying mathematics check this Wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractals
This journal will look at the elements that go into creating a beautiful Fractal Image, rather then the complexity of the base mathematics.
I did not come to these thoughts about the "Perfe
This weekend I painted a large mural in Chinatown!I love painting large and it is always an honor to be asked by a wonderful organization to paint at their space and represent their community visually. This week I was asked to paint a piece in Oakland Chinatown at Lincoln Square. An amazing community center the has droves of smiling people enjoying the giant ship like playgrounds, the expansive b-ball courts, and sword fighting in the lawn bowling court, to name a few. The ages ranges from 1 to 100+ and all the folks were super stoked to see this painting in process. My good friend Christopher Mackessy, ( who took most of the photos for the deviantART Gear Shop,) is also a painter, As well as a teacher. He procured the walls through the community center with the blessings and we spent the last 2 days painting. Many of his students came out and we fitted them with brushes and oversized tee shirts and they went to town with our instruction. With the help of these smiling pint sized 8 year old Picassos we crushed it with a mixtureThis weekend I painted a large mural in Chinatown!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This

A touching note, and my advice on moving forward.AmirBeniz said the following:A touching note, and my advice on moving forward.3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I am a High school senior at the moment, and I'm choosing colleges to further develop my inspiration for art.
Right now I'm in a rut to decide which school to go to and how I am to pay for it.
I've been drawing everyday since I was a child but my art hasn't gotten to the professional level, ya know like yours.
What do you think I should do?
Re: Did you go to school for this?
I greatly appreciate note and I can say that I know exactly how you are feeling about the next steps from high school into art land. On your page it says "I am an upcoming artist whom generally started out drawing marvel superhero stick figure comics and grew up wanting to become part of Marvel's team of comic artists." I can honestly say now

Below is the latest installment of my "favorite faves" -- the best, in my opinion, of works I faved recently. Some of these pieces you have no doubt seen; others you may be viewing for the first time. If you come across something you like please let the artist know -- give them some DA love in the form of faves and comments; also take a look at their galleries -- you might like their work so much you'll want to watch them!
Remember, everyone could use a little more DA love!
(Many of the works shown below are included in the galleries of two groups I recently started. Visit Ugly-Mug-Portraits http://ugly-mug-portraits.deviantart.com/ and Surreal-Landscapes http://surreal-landscapes.deviantart.com/ to view even more incredible art created by very talented DA artists in need of your support!)

The Twenty under Twenty Features is a project for those members who have artworks with under 20 favourites. And I'm pretty sure we all have them, somewhere hidden in our galleries.
:iconthefavouriteshowcase: opens it's doors wide open to every piece of art the world has not yet seen.
This is the main goal of the Twenty under Twenty Features.
We want to expose the invisibles!
Every week we will feature works that have finally gotten over that twenty fave hump. This is open to everyone and every artistic venue. So submit your work, or suggest a friends, to The Invisible Folder and let us help you make it shine! But don't forget to look around and share the love with the rest of the folder!
These are the contributors that have volunteered their time to ensure your work stands out! Thank you all so much!

More Shutdown News and Google Using YouGOP Keeping the Government ShutdownMore Shutdown News and Google Using You2 years ago in Personal More Like This
What's really frustrating about the government shutdown is that BOTH SIDES want to reopen the government. Republican and Democrats alike want the government to continue to operate. However thanks to a handful of Republican leaders in Congress, things have been set up to basically STOP our government for their political gain.
Basically they've silently changed the way congress works to place the entire power of the shutdown in the hands of the GOP.
I do not think that your average republican is inherently evil or a bad person. There are actually a lot of laws that both Republican and Democrats agree on. But more and more I'm seeing the Republican PARTY start to exercise their ideas independently of their demographic. I mean, the whole point of the government shutdown (according to the Republican Party) was to stop Obamacare. But Obamacare still went into effect because it wasn't part of the budget plan that was actually under discus
Back to School and Accepting CriticismI am sick to death of people bitching to me that I can't accept criticism.Back to School and Accepting Criticism3 years ago in Personal More Like This
And I'm tired of people thinking that I don't WANT constructive feedback or that I block anyone who "offers" it.
But because I'm tired of writing long defense journals trying to open people's eyes to what I think is noticeable improvement on my part.... we're gonna try something a little different.
I think the best way to tell if I am accepting criticism is to SEE it in action. So this is what I'm gonna do. Each week I am going to post something I'm working on, be it a page from a comic, an illustration, or whatever. I'm gonna start with the pencil sketches and I'm going to allow everyone everywhere to critique it.
But hang on... I don't just want people writing longwinded essays pointing out what's wrong with it and how to improve...
I'm a visual learner and I need to see what I am doing wrong in order to get better. You'll be able to download it and draw on it, resubmit it as a link in a comment, redraw it ent
Government Up and Still Taking CommissionsGovernment Back UpGovernment Up and Still Taking Commissions2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So our government has be reinstated. Only hours before a final default would've gone into effect everyone finally came together and voted to restore our government. The Tea-Party Extremist who spearheaded the shutdown admitted defeat but not that they're going to give up that easily. Remember, this is only the extension that we were originally going to vote on before finally resolving the issue with the budget. So in a few months we're gonna be right back here singing the same song all over again.
Anyway... WE'RE BACK, BABY!
I'm still taking commissions as I mentioned in my previous journal. If you're interested please check it out as it has all the details you need: http://tompreston.deviantart.com/journal/Commissions-still-open-407716229

When I saw this piece I was blown away. So much detail, so many characters, and so much personality thrown in here. I love the subtle details of Alex Ze Pirate, Tom, Joe, Tenko, etc all being in the background. Plus Cleo just looks so cute and embarrassed!

This was one of the first entries and what I really enjoyed about it was the personalities being brought out of the characters. Not only does Carl look well rendered, but he's trying to tell the history of th
