Wikus van der Merwe woke from unsettled dreams to discover he'd been turned into a cockroach.
The strain of sleeping on the ramshackle chair for yet another night in Kisa's tent told on his back and legs. He opened his large golden eyes and stared for several minutes at the underside of the white canvas dome of the tent. The morning air was sultry and bleak, reeking of the garbage that had quickly amassed throughout District 10 as more and more junk was shoveled in from the remains of District 9, the place where once he'd studied and overseen.

Mohlakeng was a small, quiet town west of Johannesburg city and precisely what they needed to go about unnoticed. Syrup's uncles' house was in a suburb in the outskirts and it had a garage with enough capacity for two cars, so that no one would even see them get out of the vehicles to get in the house.
Syrup seemed to be really enjoying herself as she went out first and shushed loudly at the rest, heading for the door at the bottom of the garage that led to the house. It was dark and Ana could only hear her step away, tripping on a few metallic things. A thin line of pale light split the wall when Syrup opened the door and poked her head through. The ship, the mostly unappreciated yet undeniable emblem of the city of Johannesburg, was gone. The skyline seemed strangely blank. Even after sundown Black Jack had barely looked away from his window at the empty twilight sky. Ana exchanged one worried look with Kyler before going in the bathroom to get the dirt and traces of blood off herself, and inside she realized she could hardly recognize the woman looking back at her from beyond the mirror.
After a shower she went back to the couch, where she sat next to Kyler to watch the images that were now showing on every station, just a bunch of shots of the District and views of the ship's lift-off from all angles. It was all hardly conclusive and nothing to do directly with them or with the rest of PoHA, which made her both hopeful and restless.
