Advice For Anime Con Artist Alley TypesI was recently asked for some Artist Alley tips, and it made me realize two things: one, that I've been going to cons for 13 years and working Artist Alleys for 8 (good god), and two, that I had a huge guide typed up already. I'd been meaning to post this for a while - so I dug up that ancient draft, refined it, and put it over here: Massive Artist Alley Advice Post</b>Advice For Anime Con Artist Alley Types6 years ago in Personal More Like This
ETA Thu, July 7, 2011 - My LJ is locked, so I'm reposting the content here.
STUFF TO BRING:
- Large water bottle or thermos - Keep this with you and refill it often. You'll be talking ALL WEEKEND, so keep dehydration at bay. (Be sure someone can watch your table during pee breaks.)
- Cell phone - You won't be able to hear your phone ring over the noise of the alley, but text messaging is a godsend at cons. Make sure your phone is set to Vibrate, and keep it close to you.
- Healthy snacks that keep - I recommend apples, alm

Pokemon Gijinka Contest (closed)//EDIT: Even though I said which Pokemon were my favorite, I would love to see all them done~Pokemon Gijinka Contest (closed)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
//EDIT: ;A; No one made a Leafeon Gijinka yet~
My first time holding a contest. It will be a design contest. The point of this contest will be to design a male or female Gijinka of one of the six Pokemon listed.
~Gijinka (擬人化) is a Japanese word meaning "humanoid", "personification", or "anthropomorphic", although the use of the word outside of Japan has come to be slightly different from the use of the word "anthropomorphic" in the anime/manga/furry/etc communities. Rather than referring to just any animal with human characteristics, a gijinka is most often a fan re-design of an animal-like character in a human or humanoid form, (ex: a Digimon or Pokémon).
So I know everyone's art style is differ
How to set a commission price list.Ok, you have decided you want to try to take commissions so now what? How to set a commission price list.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well there is a lot involved. How will you take money? Will you ship? Make prints? Where do you list? Don't worry all that will be covered soon. But first. Lets lay a foundation.
Commissions are about getting paid for a custom drawing. So the first thing you need is a price list. And this is the hardest thing. "WHAT IS MY ART WORTH?" Well lets see if we can figure that out.
Step 1: Personal evaluation.
Ok, first thing, you need to be as brutally honest here as you can be. How good are you? Really? Know all art has value. Your work is not worthless. But you need to know where you fall in terms of skill. The better you are the more you can reasonably charge. The more skilled a surgeon the more they get paid. Same with art.
Ask people besides close friends and family how they would rank your art on a scale of 1-5. And ask them to be honest.
Ok, once you know where you rank its time to decide what you wan

How to set up DA commission business-edI think I have given enough advices to different people of the same thing I might as well write a journal about it. (So I can be lazy and just pass the link to them later.)How to set up DA commission business-ed8 years ago in Personal More Like This
This journal is for starters who wants to start their own DA commissioning business.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO START
When you have enough watchers and people interested in your art.
When you have a closely-bounded community around your work/gallery
How many is enough I won't say, because it soly depends on the community around you and your work. Some artists can live on one patron, others need to live on millions of them.
If you need more exposure, do fanart. After all, people would type and search famous series, not your name. If they do type your name, you are famous.
If you don't want to do fanart, the other option is draw the cliche-category.
Pirates are selling, draw pirates.
Angels and demons always sell
You get my drift?
HOW TO START

Artist Alley tips, tricks, and other stuff learnedThis past May I sold my art at Anime North Artist Alley, or as it is now renamed, Comic Market. It was literally like taking an entire business class practical exam squashed into three loooooooooooong days. Not counting the month of work I sweated and stressed over. But it was definitely worth it, and I recommend it to everyone. Less because it's a great opportunity to make money (DEFINITELY NOT, unless you have previous experience), but because of the amount of stuff you will LEARN.Artist Alley tips, tricks, and other stuff learned4 years ago in Personal More Like This
There are so many things I would do differently next time, all of which are pointed out on the list below. But the idea is that by doing it, I now know what exactly it is like, and things I hadn't thought of beforehand and now known to me. Not to say the entire thing was a disaster; rather, it really went 50/50. Below are tips, but also examples from my own experiences. This is written for the newbie, but anyone's welcome.
I'd like to stress that "everyone is different". I think the outcome of your experie
How does a tailmouth work?reposting from my FA journal, I wrote this a while ago.How does a tailmouth work?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've had a few people ask about my interpretations of tailmouths, and now I've really had time to formulate how they live and work I thought it'd be cool to write up an info post!
This is just my interpretation of them - yours DO NOT have to be like this (actually I might prefer it if they weren't). You can change anything and everything, it can be completely and totally different, I don't want anyone to feel like this is the "official" way the species works or whatever.
For a tad bit of info first, in my worldbuilding there are humans, "demihumans", normal animals, and "demons". Even within the world the distinction between demihuman and demon is somewhat blurred though most people consider demons to be demihumans with magic basically. Demihumans and demons are human-like creatures, sometimes fur-covered and sometimes with human skin, that usually have some sort of animal distinction - ears or tail or whatever. Tailmouths are a t

Artist Alley First-Timer? What You Need to Know!
A little advice after my time at the artist alley.
An original article by Scar23
Artist Alley: My First Time!
Many of us have been to some form of comic or anime convention and traveled through the artist alley. The first time I ever went to a convention was WonderCon in San Francisco, California, and the first place I stopped was at the artist alley. I remember being so surprised that there was actually a place completely devoted to artists. After browsing through the artist alley and meeting some of the artists, I thought to myself, “One day, you’ll be here, too.” About 5 years later, I was coerced into getting my first artist alley table at Sac-Con in Sacramento, California on March 6th, 2011.
Preparing to have an artist alley table was one of the most stressful thin

Take all your frustrations, doubts, negativity and use them as fuel for the fire. Tell your self you'll prove your doubts wrong. You might not be good enough today but you can do it someday. That's the kind of attitude I've always had. You don't think I can do it! Well I'll show you someday! you'll see.
If you think you can't draw realistically, but want to be good at Anime then... STOP RIGHT THERE! Every good artist whether it be anime, cartoons, anything will be able to draw Realistically to at least a degree. Not what people want to hear but it's true. But it doesn't mean you have to give up what you love, take what you learn and apply to what you love.
(´･ω･`) I actually don't feel like I can be taken seriously when I say that because of they way I draw... But it's what I really do think. Well I'll just have to get

Commission WidgetTook a peek at DA's new commission widget. Right idea, wrong execution IMO.Commission Widget2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'd much rather be able to accept actual money than DA's faulty and cumbersome point system, and the fact DA takes a "cut" of the commission money just for using the app is a really shitty move.
For example a $30 commission = 3000 points, but I would only get 2400 points or $24 according to the widget. That means DA is taking about a 20% cut of your earnings, which is bullshit. Also, the app only goes up to a maximum of 4000 points. So people who charge more than $40 can't use the app.
I'm probably not even doing the math correctly, it just seems overly laborious and frustratingly convoluted. I'm all for an app that makes taking commissions easier, and honestly 10 years was a LONG way to wait for such an app to finally be implemented.. It just needs refining.
It just makes more work for the consumers to force them to put down money to buy points (which DA takes a percentage of), only to allow them to pay for a

You are a glitch. Unable to leave your game, and unable to be loved by the other game characters. You live in the game Fix-it Felix Jr. You really don't know how you got here. You just... appeared, I guess. You think your a nicelander, but you are very different. You are very tall and slim, you would say you were about 5 foot 9, meaning that the normal nicelanders were at your knee. Like, you said you indeed dressed like a nicelander. You wore a long (f/c) dress and some (f/c) flats. You weren't allowed to be in the game, so you would just hang out in the dump where all the bricks went. After closing, a nice woman named Mary would take you in and she would let you make cakes with her.
One day, at closing, you were making some small cakes with Mary when you looked out the window. You saw the game's villian, Wrec

I removed all of the old drawings because they... are ugly and I didn't want them on my front page forever LOL. but this still exists:
And the rest is history
So don't give up hope guys. Whether you're 10, 15, 20, or older, as long as you keep at it, you WILL improve. Look at anatomy books and proper reference, that's something I wish I did more of when I was little. But you guys have SO many resources now! And computer programs galore. I really didn't have the internet at all for 1/5th of my artistic life, and then another 1/5th I just stopped drawing because I gave up. So take use of those resources, look at tutorials on Deviantart, and keep practicing. And mimicry is okay. Just try and branch out and create your own individual style once you get the hang of things!
Good luck everyone I still have a long way to go, too.
