DeviantART will not be "going black" tomorrow (January 18th) in boycott of SOPA & PIPA. You can expect the site to remain online, with no interruptions to normal service.
However, we are looking forward to providing a forum for educated discussion on the matter. Keep an eye on #hq for more details.
Comments have been disabled as there is clearly confusion regarding the intent of these stamps. These stamps exist for the sake of providing this community's artists with simple media to express their opinion. These SOPA-related stamps are not implicit of deviantART's opinion of the bill. Again, please stay tuned to #hq for an upcoming discussion of SOPA & PIPA.
Here We Go Again: Apparently the Government doesn't want to listen or care about the freedom of the internet. Typical, right? They're trying to keep bringing it back and trying to pass it once again. Here's a couple links to the petitions to Stop SOPA 2014. Anyone is able to sign it, even if you don't live in North America! petitions.whitehouse.gov/petit… petitions.whitehouse.gov/petit…
One More Time Update 2013: The petition has EXCEEDED the amount of signatures BEFORE September! While you don't have to sign it anymore, the bigger the fight against SOPA, the more impact we will have on the government. Let them know we want a free internet, and we vow to keep fighting to keep it that way. "It isn't the people who should fear their government. It's the government who should fear its people." - V for Vendetta
Update Edit: In a recent journal, it brings up a much needed point. I suggest reading it and maybe tweeking the current petition/make a new one under the SOPA 201 name, so the legislation can target the problem we have with it. I know the current petition is about 75% into its goal, but it's vague on what we have issues with it. Again, read the journal to get more of an understanding on the issue. Youtube is still under some heavy threat by this. Journal: flamewarflipsides.deviantart.c…
URGENT UPDATE!!!: It turns out SOPA is back up on its feet, trying to pass AGAIN. This time, it's targeting sites like Youtube, Justin.tv and Twitch.tv. Don't know what that means? If you are streaming copyrighted content in a live video stream, you will be fined and sent to jail for YEARS. This MUST be stopped before September 21, otherwise this time, SOPA will win. So, what can YOU do? This; sign this Petition for greater good. It will also explain briefly what SOPA is targeting (from what I heard, they're still taking down sites wrongfully). So, take a couple minutes to sign it. You also don't need to be a US citizen to sign it either. Petition: petitions.whitehouse.gov/petit…
Update Again!: The people who originated this bill are trying to bring it back into the spotlight again. I think it's still under the same name of "SOPA". They think since we won, we have relaxed and have forgotten about it. Apparently, they haven't learned their lesson the FIRST time. So far, it's been pushed forward three times, only to have it pushed back three times, so they're obviously persistent. We're just gonna repeat the same process as before: wasting time and wasting money on a poorly worded bill. Right now, just keep an eye on it, and make sure it stays where it was originally put.
Update!: The government can't TAKE A HINT that SOPA/CISPA is a "poorly worded bill". It violates our 4th amendment, and it's not going to help anything, only hinder, if not hurt, us. Do whatever you can to tell your state rep (in a professional way, this is crucial), letter or e-mail, to please tell them NOT to pass the bill. This will also help too: www.cispaisback.org/ Tweet, share, do whatever to spread the word! THIS BILL MUST NOT PASS!!
SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is out to destroy our American Internet Freedom. If this bill passes, we will lose sites such as Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter. People who LP (Let's Play) games will also vanish (Chuggaaconroy, NintendoCapriSun, OctaneBlue, etc). You can send a letter to your state representative, telling them to not pass this unfair bill. Or you can sign multiple petitions that are trying to stop this bill as well. Or you can do both.
In a nutshell, SOPA supporters want to control the internet. And what's the root to all of this? Money. They have been distributing the downloadable software so you can download music, moves, TV shows, etc. Now, they're turning around and gonna sue those downloaders for thousands of dollars. Is this fair? No. It's called GREED, one of the seven deadly sins. So if you don't wanna get your ass sued, fight back this greedy and corrupt bill. Don't believe me? Check out the second video in this description.
Edit: Thanks for the faves everyone. Though this will be taken down when the time is right and SOPA is no longer an issue. Edit 2: Don't forget, you can comment your thoughts on SOPA, though faves already say a lot. Edit 3: Those who support this don't know what we're in for, and that's the saddest thing. Edit 4: Geez, this thing got popular quick. ._. Thanks for all the favorites!
<__< People dun know about this one. Which is sad.. but understandable. ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement [It is an INTERNATIONAL "treaty"]
Similar to SOPA in how it is a threat to our freedom on the internet, but worse still.
While SOPA might have taken down websites that had material that violated copyright, ACTA actually gives companies the incentive to not only police their customers actions, but also give out personal information, make any actions that are currently protected by Fair Use punishable, but also block the internet use of those citizens who infringe on copyright in any way.
ACTA is much more dangerous for how it directly attacks the security and freedom on the public. But what also makes it more threatening is the fact that ACTA has been negotiated internationally SECRETLY.
Both the Bush and Obama administration have ruled to keep information on ACTA private from the public. The agreement isn't being argued even by our democratically elected representatives.
The American people are both blinded from seeing what this "treaty" is about, AND have absolutely no say in regards to it.
Make sure that while we are celebrating over the blow to SOPA and PIPA, realize that there is even worse a danger to the public.
save the interwebs, sign the petition against SOPA. D: If this bill passes it could possibly block Facebook. No one would be able to access it, That means no more Happy pets, no more farmville... No more ANYTHING. Even if you dont live in the USA you can still sign the petition and write them a letter saying "Hey, this is gonna affect the world" because it will! The bill basicly will block any website that has the ability to host anything pirated. Facebook, youtube, photobucket, DeviantArt, FurAffinity.. ANYTHING. Gone. So please, let your voice be heard. It'll be decided by congress today, the 21st. [link]
Heres a Youtube that explains SOPA further and a lot more detailed then I did: [link]
Also Appropriate song for this event if it occurs: [link]
Update The debate has be postponed until January 2012; according to this article. [link]
We have a right to cosplay! Make covers of our favorite songs! Draw batman and ponies! We have a right to our copyrights and freedom of speech! America is not a Socialist government, we're a democracy! Remind them!
Jesus told us: "Do not judge so that you will not be judged. "For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? "Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye? "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. (Matthew 7:1-5)"
He ALSO told us "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)"
And thus is why I say that when people judge other people, we are actually hurting them spiritually.
Christians are NOT supposed to judge other people as if they were of a higher standard than anybody else. Christians are only sinners who have been saved. If God showed mercy on us, then why wouldn't we show mercy on other people?
To put yourself on a pedestal as if you can judge other people, is not only hypocritical; but trying to use scripture to support your doing so and in the name of the lord is Blasphemy.
This commentary can also be considered hypocritical I know: however, people need to know the truth about Christianity: and the truth isn't that Christians are any better than other people save for that they have been given mercy for what they've done.
To continue living in hypocrisy and HATRED goes against everything that God taught Christians.
We are not in God's place to judge other people. NOBODY is perfect.
The only real way to get people to see reason is to show them love and support to what is right: So do not harm your neighbors spiritually by judging them: Show them the love and care that Jesus taught us to show one another.
Is it not a commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself?
