Exploring Art 37: Does your muse have adhd?Hello friends. I am here to discuss a serious problem.Exploring Art 37: Does your muse have adhd?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Adhd in Muses.
You see, this is something that rarely goes diagnosed, much less treated, but it is a situation we all know. You are there, working hard. Your muse is leaning over your shoulder offering words of encouragement, and then... suddenly..
"Yes, yes that's looking wonderful, just a line to the left no-SHINEY! TENTACLES! BUTTERFLIES! WE SHOULD SCULPT! I KNOW I KNOW CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAFT FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAM! HEY YOU HAVENT DONE OIL PAINTING EVER, WE SHOULD START NOW! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
There you sit, gazing in wide eyed startlement as your once refined, elegant inspiration flings itself in a frenzy around the room leaving a trail of art supplies in it's wake. We've all been there, but I am here to say.. you are not alone. There is help.
The first step is to contain the muse. This may not be easily done, but I have found constructing a cage of colored pencils that have been taped together with artist's duck tape works wonders o
Don't be afraidAll your life people are going to knock you down. They're going to call you names, they're going to drag you down into the mud. And unfortunately, you are part of that mob of faceless people who'll drag you down as well. You'll look in the mirror and say "I'm not good enough". You'll work real hard and it just won't be enough. You'll be different from everyone else and wonder "What's wrong with me."Don't be afraid11 months ago in Personal More Like This
If you're lucky, you'll get really good at something. Really great at it. People will compliment you and you'll swell with pride... and then be told "Don't be arrogant". "Don't be too cocky" for showing pride in your accomplishments. If you're a woman and you KNOW something is right, and you stand up for your opinions, well... you'll be called opinionated. Bossy. You'll be knocked down, the legs kicked out from under you to bring you back down to the level of everyone else.
And then you'll start apologizing. You'll start being ashamed of the things you were proud of. You'll start prefacing

How to become better at art? How to gain necessary skill and how to stay motivated and inspired?
There are no right, or wrong answers to these questions, as we all are different and we have our own creative journeys - but here are some of my thoughts about the topic and I hope that they might be helpful.
1. Make art with your heart
Make the art that you enjoy to create. Make what resonates with you, put your heart in it (not literally) and it will show through your artworks.
2. Be consistent
Commit to yourself. Do something daily, even if it's just a sketch. Perhaps, do a study every morning or make speedpaintings. You may not see the progress at first, but you shouldn't get discouraged by that. Not every single one of your artworks has to be a masterpiece and it's totally okay to have a bad drawing every once
An Introduction to Medieval ManuscriptsEarly Christian and Byzantine ManuscriptsAn Introduction to Medieval Manuscripts11 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Before the book, there was the manuscript. I’m talking medieval manuscripts, those ancient tomes associated with dusty monasteries and devout prayers. In fact, most European medieval manuscripts were made for religious purposes, and the first known manuscripts, or codices, are early Christian. The codex was developed in the 4th to 6th centuries C.E. as a means to carry and read texts in an easier way. In ancient times, scrolls and tablets were the common way to go. With the coming of the evangelic Bible, other means were needed to carry the Christian message across the world. The codex was lighter than a tablet, and easier to read than a scroll. It was also made from parchment or vellum, which lasted much longer than papyrus, the material used for scrolls. There are scientific, philosophical and mythical texts written down in manuscripts. However, by far the most manuscripts of Medieval Europe contain texts from the
How to gain more exposure on deviantART!So you think you're a pretty good artist, and have some decent pieces, but nobody to show. Or perhaps you're a learning artist who wishes to attract more attention to your pieces to get advice and criticism. Sound like you? Many artists on deviantART wish that they could have more exposure in the art world, but I've noticed that not many of them know how to go about doing so. There are actually many options, and we shall examine them thoroughly, to hopefully get you more exposure!
First off, just so that we're all on the same page, please don't expect exposure if you have nothing in your gallery. You need to be serious and dedicated about this. Also, ALWAYS make sure that the work is your own, and not stolen from someone else. It will surely get back to the artist from which you took it from, and you will be severely penalized.
Now that we've cleared that up, we'll begin!
1. The most common way to get exposure, comments and favourites is to
10 beneficial things artists should ask themselvesHere's 10 important questions to ask yourself. Read them constantly as a checklist to make sure your are heading in the right direction and using your artistic potential.10 beneficial things artists should ask themselves4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
1. What motivates you to create art? Write down your answer and think about how you can use this very important information.
2. What kinds of information have you been putting on the internet? The internet is the new resume. If I can find dumb pics or comments from you then other people can too...
3. Does your art express something interesting? Great art means something to its viewers, not just its creator.
4. Does failure push you forward? How you deal with failure will determine how skillfull you will become.
5. Do you enjoy arguing or flaming people's work? If you are the type of person to hate on others, it will come back to you. Especially with the internet and all the social networking.
6. Do you try out new methods/materials/subjects that might be unconfortable at first? Success is inevitable if you always choo
how to improve at drawing: a guideSo as I sit and read my comments, I found that alot of people want to know how to improve.how to improve at drawing: a guide2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm betting you are tired of hearing people say "practice"?
Well for me, improving is not instant. I may not even notice it, but every time I draw im improving a little.
How to Improve:
Draw all the time, draw everything you see, draw what you want to draw, draw in other peoples styles, draw realistic, draw cartoon, anything. JUST DRAW. Do it all the time. Draw in your notebooks and on your homework.
Do you hate the way you draw eyes? Maybe your paws/hands need more practice? Then find references and use them. I personally don't always find the time to use references, but I find when I do, my art is 10x better. Just practice drawing those eyes you've never gotten quite right. Look at other art and see what you really like about their style. And then try it out.
Now that you've practiced a bit more, draw somethin
Where does it come from? III. - The Czech FlagČeská Vlajka - The Czech FlagWhere does it come from? III. - The Czech Flag5 months ago in Personal More Like This
There are a number of stories about how we came to the flag today but let me start with a bit of history. Since accepting white lion on red as a symbol of the Bohemian kings, the two colors have naturally followed. Either used as streamers or as the red-white bicolour (the white is on top because it is the color of the charge). There is no way to point to a date and say "the flag originated here" but we can say that whit and red were made the official state colors of Bohemia in 1253 (and were used for example, on the sealing cord for official documents)and the flag arose some time within the 13th to 14th century. Although never made official, we can find many depictions of the banner on historical images, often flown as a swallow-tail.
As we enter the 16th century, we see the Habsburgs gain the throne of the Kingdom of Bohemia with g

This journal exists because the other one's getting old and i needed something to keep this interesting. Also, the amateurish journal skin i created years ago annoys me and since i'm an absolute N00b when it comes to CSS i thought it would be best to finally remove it.
The last nights i was biking through our town to do nightshift (i love doing that. Not a single soul around and you realise how quiet even the civilised parts of the world can get) and while letting my thoughts flow i was grabbed by some intense nostalgia for some reason. I remembered my childhood especially and....how ridiculously naive i used to be back then. The way i saw the world, all the things i had to learn and understand first (the very anatomy of „sarcasm" for example).
I remembered some cases that appear especially wondrous to me nowadays when i think about it so i thought it would be funny if i share some of them.

Douchebag of the year AwardSo, this happened a few nights ago.Douchebag of the year Award1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I live out in a rural county and have to take a fairly windy, two-lane road to get into town. I am on said road at dusk, going five under because the deer like to play chicken with my van. A muscle car with a souped-up engine, flame decals and the license plate "WRK 4 FUN" comes roaring up behind me, going at least 20 over the limit. the road is made of blind curves so he cannot pass me. This infuriates him, so he flashes his brights, curses, gives me the finger, etc. I do not speed up, because hitting a deer might kill me. After about 60 seconds, he decides to pass me on the left, on a blind curve.
…and he hits the oncoming police car.
I slam on the brakes and get out to make sure everyone is okay. He hit the cruiser mostly on the side, so the driver's side engine, mirror and door are wasted but no-one is seriously hurt.
Douchebag gets out first, and starts cussing at me, the police officer, and life in general: "FUCKING FUCK FUCK, YOU FUCKED UP MY

Dealing with Copyright InfringementEver since I started contributing stock and admiring the beautiful artworks submitted on this site, copyright infringement has always been a hot issue. Some topics & discussions are better left to run their course and fade away, but I think repetition should be encouraged when it comes to copyright infringement. For every person who learns about the importance of intellectual property, there are still many others who remain ignorant or just don't care.Dealing with Copyright Infringement2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I can sympathize somewhat with the well-intentioned person who simply didn't know any better, although it's still no excuse to steal images. Thing is, they didn't know they were stealing, so it makes it easier for me to forgive as long as they are receptive, take my concerns seriously and learn a life lesson to never infringe on copyrights again.
There are however more shady characters who know full well they are stealing images, but just don't care. And even when you confront them about it, they will tell you to go to hell because the s

to have all kinds of sexual orientation..."
"...as long as you have one.
If you don't then you're broken."
The Asexual Orientation
Asexuality is a sexual orientation where a person does not experience sexual attraction. One out of every hundred people is likely to be asexual and facts such as this are still pushing boundaries and challenging the thought that the pursuit of happiness doesn't have to include sexual attraction.
I am very passionate about creating bridges of understanding, as I have said many times before. To understand asexuality better, take into consideration that there are different ways of being attracted to a person and that these attractions are not necessarily tied together.

LAST MAN STANDING - KILLBOOK OF A BOUNTY HUNTERSo, the book is out!LAST MAN STANDING - KILLBOOK OF A BOUNTY HUNTER1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Yes, it's actually in stores now. I know, crazy right?
It's a property I've been working on for the past five years, and started here on DeviantArt. Thanks to the loyal fanbase of it, it was able to be turned into a book first for Heavy Metal. After, it was picked up by Paramount Pictures to be turned into a film, and now picked up by Dark Horse Comics.
I can't tell you how excited I am for you to all finally see it.
But most importantly, to the 2012 Pre-Orders, your books are on the way (TO US!) Once I receive them, I will personalize each one, and send the two signed prints as well. Thank you for your patience, it means the world to me.
To everyone else interested, here are some awesome reviews and link to the book itself.
Much love from Gabriel and I.

Iiiiit's contest time! All original literature welcome.
This is a speculative fiction contest—the technology requirement could cover steampunk, 'John Carter,' 'The Windup Girl,' 'Watchmen,' '2001: A Space Odyssey' or about anything else you can think of. The one thing that isn't permissible is magic.
That was a joke.
Your story must center around the development of a relationship between two entities.
Some things to consider:What kind of relationship is it? (No, "relationship" doesn't have to mean "romance.")Who/what is it between? Is the development positive/negative?
The relationship must be noticeably changed at the end.Distance/death don't count if they're still besties or whatever.I don't mean changed personalities. I mean a changed relationship.
Plausible but (currently) nonexistent technology must be integral to the development of this relationship.Time travel goes forward.Nothing goes faster than light, a

The Secret Drawing IngredientIf you're an artist of any kind it's extremely important to hone your craft and technical abilities. After all, the better you draw and the better you are at mastering the drawing tools you use - the easier it is to convey your unique message for public consumption. The Secret Drawing Ingredient10 months ago in Personal More Like This
But how important is technical ability, really? Obviously, it's very important. Understanding anatomy, light and shadow and perspective are key to solid drawing. It's important to always be improving in those departments. It's also very important to master the tools you use to draw with. Learning to render or color professionally can only increase your appeal to both fans and other professionals.
But what about developing artistic appeal on a much deeper level?
It's not just about finding a pleasing style. Anyone can do that with enough practice. You can always choose a popular artist and emulate his or her style. The blueprint is right there. But why d
