Don't be afraidAll your life people are going to knock you down. They're going to call you names, they're going to drag you down into the mud. And unfortunately, you are part of that mob of faceless people who'll drag you down as well. You'll look in the mirror and say "I'm not good enough". You'll work real hard and it just won't be enough. You'll be different from everyone else and wonder "What's wrong with me."Don't be afraid2 years ago in Personal More Like This
If you're lucky, you'll get really good at something. Really great at it. People will compliment you and you'll swell with pride... and then be told "Don't be arrogant". "Don't be too cocky" for showing pride in your accomplishments. If you're a woman and you KNOW something is right, and you stand up for your opinions, well... you'll be called opinionated. Bossy. You'll be knocked down, the legs kicked out from under you to bring you back down to the level of everyone else.
And then you'll start apologizing. You'll start being ashamed of the things you were proud of. You'll start prefacing
Exploring Art 37: Does your muse have adhd?Hello friends. I am here to discuss a serious problem.Exploring Art 37: Does your muse have adhd?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Adhd in Muses.
You see, this is something that rarely goes diagnosed, much less treated, but it is a situation we all know. You are there, working hard. Your muse is leaning over your shoulder offering words of encouragement, and then... suddenly..
"Yes, yes that's looking wonderful, just a line to the left no-SHINEY! TENTACLES! BUTTERFLIES! WE SHOULD SCULPT! I KNOW I KNOW CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAFT FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAM! HEY YOU HAVENT DONE OIL PAINTING EVER, WE SHOULD START NOW! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
There you sit, gazing in wide eyed startlement as your once refined, elegant inspiration flings itself in a frenzy around the room leaving a trail of art supplies in it's wake. We've all been there, but I am here to say.. you are not alone. There is help.
The first step is to contain the muse. This may not be easily done, but I have found constructing a cage of colored pencils that have been taped together with artist's duck tape works wonders o
BC Bookbinding Instructional Book!I have created some tutorials in response to several requests over the years. In that time I have also been gathering and formulating for my own Instructional book to have published in the near future.BC Bookbinding Instructional Book!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I have myself used instructional books over the years, but have found that they only go so far or are redundant. I want to bring to my audience and those with the desire to learn the craft a book that will instruct in a way that is easy to understand and excites the creator.
Some of my bookbinding friends have warned me not to reveal all my secrets. I do not intend to do this, but what I do intend to do is help others create and feel confident in creating a durable leather-bound book with the quality and the techniques of old.
I only ask for your patience as this is in the works and will not be rushed. I will reveal when I intend to publish.
I would love some feedback and any requests that all of you wonderful people might have. Remember, this instructional book will be created with my g

A reference guide on bookbinding typesA reference guide on bookbinding typesA reference guide on bookbinding types2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
When I tell people I'm a bookbinder they often think I make only one type of book; the library kind. That, however, is only one of the many ways an artist can create a book. For me, it's a fun challenge to pick the right binding style to go with the purpose of the book. Whether it is a novel that needs to look really classy or medieval, a sketchbook for a graphic novelist or a paper about connections that lets me show the binding. In this article I'm going to tell you a little bit about all the types of bookbinding that I know. I'm not going into details but, if possible, I will link to images and tutorials that do.
If you're here for inspiration: this guide is pretty long. I recommend scrolling through the images first!
To make a start...
The different ways of binding books can be broken down into two general groups: adhesive bindings and non-adhesive bindings. Adhesive b
Blind Winter Poetry ContestThe Blind Winter Poetry ContestBlind Winter Poetry Contest4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
With the winter comes a specific sense of appearance, be it snow, a frosty window and a fireplace, or blistering sun, the beach, and a cool drink. No matter where the location, the season brings a certain sense of familiarity...and we're challenging you to reconsider that familiar scene!
The prompt, should you choose to take it on, is to write a poem about winter as you know it. The challenge, however, is that you can't use the sense of sight within the poem. Deprived of sight, you'll have to rely on your other four senses as a means of describing winter as you know it.
Only new poetry will be accepted for this contest, so no recycling older works as entries.
All entries must be posted to the Literature gallery (not Scraps), though any subcategory in the poetry category is allowed.
Entries must be no longer than 50 lines.
Bookbinding Resources - Buying SuppliesFor some of the new binders out there, I thought it might be helpful to provide a few resources. I've compiled a small list of online sites that I have used to purchase bookbinding supplies. A good scrapbooking website that I found - for decorating the inside of your books!

An Introduction to Medieval ManuscriptsEarly Christian and Byzantine ManuscriptsAn Introduction to Medieval Manuscripts2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Before the book, there was the manuscript. I’m talking medieval manuscripts, those ancient tomes associated with dusty monasteries and devout prayers. In fact, most European medieval manuscripts were made for religious purposes, and the first known manuscripts, or codices, are early Christian. The codex was developed in the 4th to 6th centuries C.E. as a means to carry and read texts in an easier way. In ancient times, scrolls and tablets were the common way to go. With the coming of the evangelic Bible, other means were needed to carry the Christian message across the world. The codex was lighter than a tablet, and easier to read than a scroll. It was also made from parchment or vellum, which lasted much longer than papyrus, the material used for scrolls. There are scientific, philosophical and mythical texts written down in manuscripts. However, by far the most manuscripts of Medieval Europe contain texts from the

A.k.a. "That beautiful detailed flowery art style".
Art Nouveau is an art movement that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. It originated in England and France, where it spread over the last two decades of the 19th century. The origins in each respective country vary though. For example, the German "Jugendstil" was first used 1897 as criticism against cheap mass production of works from artists like Henry van de Velde. Art Nouveau was by far no consistent art movement; there were several geographical differences, although some basic characteristics stayed the same. Those key features are decorative curves and flowery elements.
All in all "Art Nouveau" constisted of divergent art movements in Europe.

How to become better at art? How to gain necessary skill and how to stay motivated and inspired?
There are no right, or wrong answers to these questions, as we all are different and we have our own creative journeys - but here are some of my thoughts about the topic and I hope that they might be helpful.
1. Make art with your heart
Make the art that you enjoy to create. Make what resonates with you, put your heart in it (not literally) and it will show through your artworks.
2. Be consistent
Commit to yourself. Do something daily, even if it's just a sketch. Perhaps, do a study every morning or make speedpaintings. You may not see the progress at first, but you shouldn't get discouraged by that. Not every single one of your artworks has to be a masterpiece and it's totally okay to have a bad drawing every once

What is bookbinding?
We all have books at home, whether they be schoolbooks, novels, journals or sketchbooks. They might be paperbacks or hardbacks, though I'm guessing not many of you own hand-crafted books. With books being commonly used and readily available items today we forget that books are (or can be) works of art! Bookbinding is a craft especially cultivated in the Middle Ages, where books were still quite rare and expensive. The art of bookbinding has survived until today, although it is no longer necessary to bind books by hand, since we have machines that can do that for us. Nevertheless, a hand-made book is a beautiful thing, and has the special appeal of something unique.
