For those of you wondering what SOPA/PIPA are, take a look at this video http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa/
As a protest of #SOPA and #PIPA (The Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act) two pieces of legislation that are up for debate once again on January 18, 2012, I will be blacked out from all my websites, deviantART included. What does this mean?
"On January 18, between 8am and 8pm EST (or 13:00 and 01:00 UTC), Reddit will be blacking out their website in protest of SOPA and PROTECT IP. We request all website administrators worldwide - and especially those running large user-content websites - to black out their website at the same time, to voice their opposition of SOPA and PROTECT IP. This legislation may very well not only change the future of the in

I find that a lot of them would like it, but know that deviantART has openly stated that they will not transfer anyone's content over.Username changing and you!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Relatively recently, Xehara, a deviant who wants to change her username posted a deviantART Suggestion here which got a Daily Deviation. I was a suggester, which shows that I am in full support of this idea.
On this Suggestion, I commented the following:
"I like this suggestion, but I know that dA's thing is that they don't want to confuse people by having people's profile links broken. So, I was thinking that instead of putting your old username back open for anyone to get, you pay the fee to have it disabled and whenever someone goes to that link, it redirects to your new page (like with Skittleboi redirecting to Josh)!"

I know that many deviants have had a rough past year. I know I have. For some, it was the economy, for some changes in their families and loved ones, and I know for some it has even been on deviantART. We have all had struggles, but this time of year, whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, is as good a time as any to thank people for what we DO have.
In this world of little, we all have something we hold dear to our hearts. Now is the time to say thanks.
So, what I would like to invite everyone to do is in the next 48 hours (Today + Thanksgiving), fave this journal to show your support, then comment with 4 things you are thankful for:
1 thing on deviantART you are thankful for
1 thing with your family, loved ones, friends, etc. you are thankful for
1 thing in your life you are thankful for

Regarding SOPA and deviantART (update)Our view at deviantART regarding SOPA is that it's probably a bad idea. There should be better ways to deal with mass infringement on the Internet than this. This bill in our view can be seen as a threat to the open Internet itself and this is very hard to digest or support.Regarding SOPA and deviantART (update)3 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
I personally have found information at the EFF and at Public Knowledge to be very helpful in understanding what is at stake.

Interested in Dreamworks? Lighting ResourceSo I attended a talk by Bert Poole - He's currently serving as a CG Supervisor on their new movie "The Croods" scheduled for release in March 2013. His most recent movie, you all know of is How to Train Your Dragon, where he was also a CG Supervisor. If you don't know what that means, that means he worked on lighting C: What I'm putting below is from notes I took during his lecture.Interested in Dreamworks? His job is to take the directors vision and make the movie look like it. He's making compositions and helping the story to better read. If you've ever talked to me on DA for three or more posts, you might have heard me blab about my major and what I'd like to do. I'd like to do into Lighting, animation second. I just don't feel my skills are as suited for animation, even though I really enjoy it.

Daily Deviations UpdateHappy Monday MorningDaily Deviations Update3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I started this morning by signing something "Moonbam13" so either this typo means I need more coffee, or this week is going to be BAMTASTIC!
I'm rooting for the latter
I wanted to post a quick update on changes to Daily Deviations. It is important to note that these changes have not been hard-coded so my team is manually following these new guidelines. This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated
The following guideline changes are in effect:
The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)
Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.
The Neglected Importance of the Online CommunityWhat is the Worldwide Online Community? The Neglected Importance of the Online Community3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The Worldwide Online Community is simply a group of people from a wide variety of countries and continents who come together to share their skills, experience, and/or love for a subject. Online communities are a fairly new faction and are not fully understood, their importance is neglected and may not reach their full potential until the next generation incorporates them more and more. It wasn't until the '90s that the Internet or World Wide Web really became a part of the culture, but in less then 20 years its impact has changed society from top to bottom.
In order to really delve into the importance of the worldwide online community, one must first define what it is. There are hundreds of different definitions of what an online community is, but this statement is generally accepted throughout these definitions.
Worldwide online communities are groups of people who join together on the Internet with a common int

IF you guys are tired with all the story of SOPA and PIPA, Lamar Smith, creator of thise bills is at it AGAIN.
Now he has created the bill H.R. 1981 which has more potential to invave our pricacy and control the internet users than SOPA ever had!
His bill uses Child Pornography as a screen to monitor your credit card and bank activity on the internet. It requires that Internet Providers hold on to information about your browsing history for up to 18 months.
Altough he says our personal infortmation will be kept in a ''safe'' place, anyone knows this is the perfect excuse for hackers to steal our personal information. it is MCUH MORE dangerous than SOPA and PIPA.
Haly-K and me made a petition here:

Remember this: The Nazis started by burning books, ACTA/PIPA/SOPA started by burning websites. Megaupload was the first, it will not be the last. When the masses no logner have information, they will be easy prey for the politicians to mould and shape to their will.
Wikipedia has so much copyrighted but not authorized material that its, by my estimate, 15 million web pages will become victims of ACTA in short order if laws supporting the ACTA treaty, signed secretly on October 1, 2011, are passed. That is equal to the number of Holocaust deaths of all groups, not just Jews. It is a bastion of modern knowledge, and let's face it, knowledge is power, they take our knowledge away, they take our power away, where does our power go? To them, of course. Websites may not be equal to human lives, but to us, they are negligible compared to l

The United States Congress is proposing two laws that address the problem of wide-scale unlicensed distribution on the Internet of motion pictures, songs, trademarked goods, and patented pharmaceuticals.
One of the proposals is called SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and would direct search engines in the United States to block Internet sites outside the United States that are primarily engaged in distributing unlicensed content.Another proposal called PIPA (Protect IP Act) would block websites located in the United States as well. The Obama administration is putting a stop to these proposals. It wants the Internet companies and the content companies to get together and come up with more functional and less destructive solutions.

Improving your Art
The dA news platform is a great way to adress the community and teach them things about a wide range of topics, and of course to find information that you didn't even know you were looking for! Over time I've collected many great articles. This series will bring them together per topic so it's easy to find what you're looking for! Besides helping people find information they need, the aim of this series is also to promote quality on the news platform.
For this issue, I chose articles about Improving your Art. There may be more issues on this topic in the future
Articles may overlap on some areas, and may contain outdated info though I've tried to avoid this.

First, part of being in a community is being understanding. deviantART Staff faces this daily as we understand member concerns and try our best to serve you.
In situations like the one we face right now with Journals, I ask you to be understanding with us as we battle with difficult circumstances balancing the needs of millions of members.
Any change we make creates frustration, but if we do not make changes then we are killed by change itself.

SixWordStories is the place where, alongside quality, quantity really does matter. As a Group, we encourage writers to explore their boundaries with prompts, collaborations and more, but we accept anyone and everyone too! Whether you are a digital artist, photographer, or something else entirely, if you can string six words together into a story, this is the place to be!
So getting to the point of this article, we are kickstarting this year with a six word story contest! We have some awesome prizes and hopefully enough freedom for you to enjoy yourselves too! Please support the contest and the article so that more can join in on the fun!

UPDATE 8 - As of Saturday, November 17, 2012, we are at 125,125 points, with only 34,875 points left to go! I was able to purchase 2,000 points a moment ago to put directly into the pool myself. My original intent was to get 8,000, but I ended up working less than I expected this week and was unable to, but as of my next paycheck (in two weeks), I will be able to purchase 8,000! That will leave us with 26,875. And after TimberClipse's AWESOME point doubler, like the one that helped out and did so amazingly earlier in the year, that will be another 8,000, leaving us with only 18,875! And his doubler is already halfway full with much thanks to rainylake for immediately putting 2,000 points in

#ToMyUnbornChild became a trending topic on Twitter a few weeks ago, and while most people used it to write loving tweets to their future children, some homophobes decided to do just the opposite.
@Homophobes, a Twitter account that retweets homophobes to expose their ignorance, published an article of 100 extremely homophobic tweets, which gained quite a bit of attention around the web.
Charlotte Moore was inspired, and decided to write and direct a PSA using the tweets. The video was produced by Brian Lee and Nick Heim.

Message Center Performance Upgrades Message Center news to know!Message Center Performance Upgrades3 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
Today we completed a three-month process of implementing performance upgrades to the Message Center. With these improvements in place, we're able to increase site speed and decrease the amount of errors deviants may experience in their Message Centers. Our Devious Technology and Tech Ops teams have been working hard to move Message Center data to its own dedicated database cluster. We made a considerable investment in servers with 96GB of memory and 12 CPU cores to handle 6 billion messages and 6500 queries per second.
What does this mean for you?
Absolutely nothing. We hope. The upgrades have already taken place and you shouldn't notice any change in your normal deviantART experience. Eventually, you should notice an increase in site speed and a decrease in Message Center errors.

DA Lit : Who We AreI am proud to be exclusively a literature artist. I really don't know how to do anything else. Here on DA, Literature is not necessarily under appreciated by most of the people in the community, it is just widely ignored. I think, really, many of us are completely okay with that. We are here for each other. We don't have thousands of followers. We don't have millions of faves. But for the most part, we have been able to find other artists that help us to refine our art. One monstroooo, ChibiDomo, or any other of my adamant critique-rs is worth a thousand faceless, nameless followers.

Why I disagree with Kony 2012Many on here and on Facebook have messaged me about the Kony 2012 movie. It's very well-made and definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.Why I disagree with Kony 20123 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Kony is a terrible criminal, and I am very much for bringing him to justice. However, I do not share the enthusiasm of the overwhelming majority about the movie and the proposals put forward by the makers. Here are ten criticisms I came up with, in no particular order.
1) If something is being hyped up all around you, this is a strong signal to think for yourself. Be especially suspicious when someone wants to use FORCE to do GOOD. Paradoxically, if you REALLY care - don't fall for appeal to emotion, as is being done here. Consider the implications and outcomes, rather than the motives. Don't let the public opinion shape yours, let the facts do so. Don't let one issue overshadow other issues which could be more important. Don't be afraid to disagree with the majority. Truth i

This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many other
