God is Not an American ValueLadies and Gentlemen of Congress, thank you for allowing me to speak today.
I do not stand before you with a hate filled heart.
I do not stand before you today wishing to destroy anyone's beliefs or ways of life.
I do not stand before you today hoping to achieve a victory for one group while hurting another.
Instead, I stand before you today in the hope that you listen open-mindedly.
That is all I ask.
In 1956, "In God We Trust" was adopted as the United States official motto. This motto has been on our coins since 1864 and on our paper currency since 1957. In 1954, the words "Under God" where added to the Pledge of Allegiance. The question of whether or not these phrases are constitutional has been argued on all levels, from the dinner tables of average Americans, all the way up to the Supreme Court. I personally believe that these phrases are unconstitutional, but the arguments for it have been so overused that I feel repeating them would be beating a dead horse.
No, instead I will b
You're Selling Broken Souls? You sell already broken soulsYou're Selling Broken Souls?3 years ago in Free Verse More Like This
Blaming your customers for soul corruption
You're trying to sell us Free Will
Which we already own in abundance
Next, you tell us you know the cure
for the sad souls you barter
"Give us back that free will
or we'll just make your lives harder!"
You sell pre-corrupted souls
to hook us on the dream
You slander me, "Fool!"
for calling out your scheme
To vote against gays and women?
Then I will truly be free?
Turn around and call ME intolerant
When it's YOUR OWN bigotry being screamed
You sell me a damaged soul
that I neither want, nor need
You expect ME to fix YOUR product
Before YOUR god can feed!
Repeating meaningless praises
just to ignore his greed
Who cares about evidence?
Or Life itself?
When your place in heaven is "guaranteed"
You sell me a soul jam-packed with your filth
- a soul you have yet to show me
You claim the crime of an ancestor is my guilt
Hah! Well, you can go ahead and blow me!
If you can sway me without ins
You do not need "God" to be Moral."If you don't believe in God, then why believe in morality?"You do not need "God" to be Moral.3 years ago in Articles & Interviews More Like This
This question was once asked by a stampmaker who has since deactivated their account here on deviantART. To this person, it seemed that morality was something that required faith. Faith, in the sense of the word that the religious use in reference to their relationship with their particular god, and not in the other sense that is used when someone speaks of trust or confidence in someone or something, based off of previous experiences.
I have always been of the opinion that we do not need god to be a good person. Some have asked me, where does the concept of good come from, but from God? It's an interesting and thought-provoking question. Where does the concept of good come from? Is it something that is learned? And if not learned, is it something that we are born with?
I feel that the solution to these questions can be found by viewing our behavior in the same wa
Common abrahamic excuses that hold little waterCommon abrahamic excuses that hold little water3 years ago in Philosophical More Like This
"God gaves us free will, ergo it's pur own fault": Except that the Bible nor the Qu'ran put emphasis on free will. Hell, this excuse is so very recent, that, until a few centuries ago, the idea that God had absolute control over our lives was very popular.
"Its our fault; Adam and Eve's sin created evil, not God!": If you have read Genesis, you'll know this is bullshit (Hell, even Yahweh admits he created evil!). Likewise, at no point is the first sin ever considered a "Pandora's Box" situation.
"God is goodness incarnate! Evil is against his nature!":...have you even read the Bible? Yahweh is also considered to not be goodness incarnate until the NT and Qu'ran; in the OT, he is treated as a Lawful Neutral agent.
"Your're putting everything out of context!": Considering I actually bother to read the Bible/Qu'ran, while you only cherry pick passages your pastor dictates...
"He died for your sins! You should be grateful!":
1- His sacrifice was pointless, He only rescued saints from Sheol
