TIP! Easy Way to Prevent Facebook TrackingFacebook surveils everyone's web browsing regardless of whether they have an account or not, as described in this paper: http://ssrn.com/abstract=1717563TIP! Easy Way to Prevent Facebook Tracking1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
A simple way to prevent any packets being sent to or received from Facebook is to set up filtering using iptables. On most GNU and Linux distributions, you can run the following three commands as root:
iptables -A INPUT -d facebook.com -j DROP
iptables -A OUTPUT -d facebook.com -j DROP
iptables -A FORWARD -d facebook.com -j DROP
The URL can be changed for other sites as well if you wish. Eg - for Twitter's "tweet" buttons run the same commands but using platform.twitter.com as the domain to reject.
For more documentation on iptables, I recommend the Arch Wiki - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Iptables

Text Beside Icons on the Desktop - NautilusI've decided to re-write this little tutorial for those who are interested in a more "Mac Feel" on the gnome Desktop.Text Beside Icons on the Desktop - Nautilus1 year ago in Personal More Like This
First, open terminal and write:
apt-get source nautilus
sudo apt-get build-dep nautilus
The build-dep command will install all the build dependencies for nautilus.
In nautilus sorce folder you just downloaded, navigate to: src\file-manager.
Find the file named: fm-desktop-icon-view.c
Open with your favorite Text Editor and find the line:
real_supports_labels_beside_icons (FMIconView *view)
Below it you'd see this line: return FALSE;
Change it to:
On GNOME3 and Nautilus 3.x+ search for the file: /src/nautilus-desktop-icon-view.c in the directory you just downloaded.
And look for this line: "supports-labels-beside-icons", FALSE,
Change FALSE to TRUE
Save the file.
Now start to compile Nautilus.
sudo make install
Choose Text Beside Icons in the Preferences.
Nautilus now should draw Text beside ico
KDE 4Now KDE 4.10 has been released, the Smoother plasma theme I'm working on will be ready for KDE 4.10. There is nothing major but I'm just making sure it will offer some of the changes in 4.10, specifically new widget handle icons, adapted thin scrollbar design and some other bits that have changed.KDE 410 months ago in Personal More Like This
It's nice to work on themes that don't break in every release, KDE have done a great job in preserving legacy for theme makers throughout the 4 series and extending customisation, UI options for the users. KDE4 isn't a one size fits all design, so never does it force a hard coded desktop design that's half for PC's and half for other devices(i.e like GNOME3, Windows 8, Unity does), it gives you a desktop the way you want it. KDE also made good decisions at the start of KDE4 with Kwin and desktop compositing, you don't need a separate desktop if you don't have 3D acceleration, in fact KDE4 can use Xrender software acceleration, which gives you some of the features of 3D acceleration(like trans

Breaking the HabitJust curious, but do you ever tell your parents or other friends that you have a "social life" online?Breaking the Habit2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The other day, I told my mother and my sister that. I told them that that was the reason why I am on the internet so much after getting into an argument with them. And that I lied about a few things about why I'm trying to send letters to friends that "I know". They suspected that I have been socializing on the Internet more than in real life, and that they are scared that I may be hanging out with the wrong crowd. I assured them that deviantART is, in general, not like Facebook, Myspace, or Youtube. My mom and my sister said that they were upset that I lied to them to cover up the fact that I do indeed talk to people that I've never met, but they do not mind now that I talk to you guys and trust every word that you write. I am older now, and I am smarter about the Internet than I was when I was about 11 or 12; I know what I am doing.
After that long talk, I got to tell them a

Sometimes in youth we play crazy mind games. One gruesome game was trying to think of the worst way to die. Or even better, the "which would you choose" version of the same conceit. Another was what would be the worst torture to endure. If there is one international touchstone that best captures youthful fears and wonders in speculation of what lies beyond the veil of death and awaits as possible punishment for our sins, it must be - to the few who have actually read it to the millions who "know" it – "Dante's Inferno." Who does not shiver at the thought of being lost somewhere in the "Nine Rings of Hell?"

The Devil Is In The DetailI'm taking my time on the Smoother Plasma theme, trying to get the more finer details right everywhere and making sure it looks right for KDE 4.10.The Devil Is In The Detail10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Here is the add widgets dialogue.
Here are the tasks.
Of course the details need to be smooth so I've paid attention in keeping the theme looking smooth all round and consistent. Hope you like it so far.
Changes to Zuki* projects.Zukitwo has been updated to work with 3.6. Plenty of new and old bugs plus regressions so far. Also some larger changes to certain parts of the theme.Changes to Zuki* projects.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Zukitwo-Dark has been scrapped because of lack of motivation. Gnome 3.6 is the worst Gnome release so far after all. (Apart from 3.0.)
Still not decided what to do with Zukini and Zukiwi. I like my latest creations more than Zukitwo, so maybe I'll just scrap all of them and create something new instead. (Once 3.8 is released maybe.)
I also think there are some Ubuntu specific bugs that I have no idea how to fix. I didn't take a closer look. No styles for the 3.4 components that are used in Ubuntu.
Advice for Forum n00bsDo you want to become a forum god? Do you want to avoid being humiliated when you post in the Deviants forum for the first time? Do you hate the idea of being called a n00b?Advice for Forum n00bs3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
If you dont know the rules of the forum (official and unofficial), the regulars will happily eat you alive. With this in mind, I asked the forum regulars to give all the n00bs some friendly forum advice. Dont say we never did anything for you.
*Note: Every forum is different. While this advice may be helpful in other forums, it was created with the Deviants (General Discussion) forum in mind.*
Ask people to give serious replies only, stop replying please, or just be nice. It wont happen, and youre much more likely to get the opposite.
