In the universe, there are an infinite number of dimensions, an infinite number of realities where people of different species go about their lives, most utterly oblivious to the fact that such an infinite number of possibilities exist. For those who do know, this knowledge is more often than not considered to be too mind-bendingly overwhelming to think about, and they do their best to ignore it, usually over a hot cup of tea.
But this story is not about any such people.
The ones in this story are completely unaware that they have lived many different lives, being reborn again and again, destined to be the best of friends, bosom buddies, two peas in a pod you get the idea. Their names are Cera and Garadun. These names were given to them when they first came into existence, and they've been stuck with them in one form or another through all their various lives. Let it not be said that Fate doesn't h

The Fighting Fusiliers were a brand-new mercenary company and a small one at that, but traditions have to start somewhere. One thing that seemed to be emerging as a Fusilier tradition was taking on people who were misfits in one way or another.
Take their new recruit, Laura Bauer. She was twenty-six standard years old and tall and beautiful, with blue eyes and long blonde hair. But her model-quality looks weren't what made her a misfit. It was her record.
Hailing from the Lyran Commonwealth world of Mississauga, Laura came from a middle-class family with a history of military service. Both her parents had been in the LCAF as enlisted personnel. They had saved up and sent their daughter first to the Port St. William Military School, and then on to the highly respected Coventry Academy. Laura had thrived and worked very hard. She'd done so well in fact that s

Garadun sat in the command couch of his Hunchback, his feet up on the control panel and his neurohelmet hanging on its hook on the side of the chair as he listened to music and read a magazine. He was ready for the match, but Jimmy wasn't.
After asking for and getting a bunch of volunteers from the Innsbruck Militia's technical company to help him, Jimmy had gone to the abandoned factory the next day to set up remote holocameras all over the ruined factory to capture the entire upcoming match. Unfortunately, the job had been a lot more difficult than expected and they had had to continue their work all through Saturday morning, the day of the fight itself. It was now past 1600 hours local time and they were still at it. The holocameras had sat in sub-zero temperatures for more than a day and several of them had had to be replaced. Jimmy and his team were in the process

Cera checked her pockets one last time to make sure she had everything, then locked the door to her flat and made her way down the stairs to the ground floor of her apartment building and out the front door, pausing to keep it open for Mrs Fujita, her elderly neighbour who thanked her for her kindness.
Garadun was parked and waiting for her in front of the building, and she quickly got into the car with him. Barely audible, the vehicle's electric motor revved higher as he got them going. His car was a Scarab, a common model produced by Gienah Automotives, who also supplied wheeled armoured fighting vehicles to the Lyran military. The car was affordable and could go for about 1500 kilometres before needing a recharge. Garadun's had its fair share of dings and scratches, with a rear bumper sticker that read MY OTHER CAR IS A BATTLEMECH. Which, ironically, was true.
The sky was dismally grey and overcast,

Garadun strolled into the Innsbruck Barracks main hangar wearing his cooling suit, his neurohelmet tucked under his arm. It seemed like forever since he'd done this and he was filled with a great sense of excitement. He had a BattleMech again.
Everything had gone pretty much to plan. It had taken two days to get Shearling ready for launch, and then she had lifted off to meet with Distant Memory at the pirate point. The ship jumped to Newton Square where Shearling detached and began the in-system journey, which took just over four standard days. There was some bureaucracy to deal with once they landed, which slowed things down, but Jimmy was able to give the Stinger in question a complete inspection. It was a typical STG-3R model, about ten years old and in relatively good shape. It would need work and customization to bring it up to Fusiliers standards, but th

The world is cool and dry: a nuclear winter devastated the planetary ecology, and desertification in the wake of massive die-offs of vegetation has left huge swathes of rock and sand only slowly being reclaimed by vegetation. Much of the world is also still radioactive: much of what was once the Southwest, Midwest and East coast of the US remain barren wastelands. Background radiation remains high, promoting a high mutation level. There is no moon: a failed effort to perfect a starship drive sent it flying out of the solar system in 1999. As a result, some pretty catastrophic changes have taken place in shoreline ecologies.
Most of the planet is ruled by upright-walking sapient beings of primate ancestry. Hardly any of them belong to the variety Homo Sapiens Sapiens.

Standing on an outcropping of rock at the top of a hill, with the Great Boreal Forest behind him and the Inn Valley stretching out in front of him, and Apollo in its red, blue and purple glory filling a large part of the sky, Garadun couldn't help but feel moved by the beauty of Kolovraty. This was a world worth protecting.
He took a deep breath, enjoying the fresh cool air. It was a few degrees above freezing and there was a thin layer of snow on the ground, broken up across the valley with bare patches of open terrain. He could just make out the Inn River from here. He understood why people had made this planet their home. He gave a last look around, then made his way back to where his Hunchback stood waiting. He climbed the ladder to the 'Mech's shoulder and stood for a moment before retracting the chain ladder and ducking into the cockpit, sealing the hatch behind him.

The Altstadt Palace was the most spectacular building on Kolovraty and the official residence of Duke Josef Sheridan. First built in 2673 when the system was part of the Rim Worlds Republic, the building was a close copy of the Hofburg Palace found in Vienna, Austria on Old Earth. The ruler of Kolovraty at the time had wanted something beautiful and grand, and had looked to the distant past for inspiration. It had been badly damaged during the Amaris Civil War, but when the Lyran Commonwealth annexed the system after the war, Duke Sheridan's ancestor restored it to its former glory.
In the heart of the palace complex were a series of magnificent halls that could serve a variety of functions, and one of the most impressive was the Ceremonial Hall. It was here that Duke Sheridan was hosting the royal ball in honour of the Fusiliers. In attendance were assorted members of Kolovraty's nobi

As Marley left the train, her reception committee, aunt Angela and her husband Gregor, were already waiting and a wide smile appeared on the girl's freckled face. The sixteen-year old bolted over the platform, doing her best to imitate a bouncy ball. "Auntie! Gregor!" she cried out, pony-tailed blond hair flying behind, and flung her arms around her aunt's neck.
"Easy, girl!" Angela, a quite attractive woman still short of forty, replied laughing, her husband grinning at the scene, but she returned her niece's powerful hug. "Do you want to kill me?"
Marley smiled. "Never!" she exclaimed, "You're my favorite aunt, after all. But I'm SO excited! That's going to be the best two weeks of my life, accompanying you on your tour!"
Her aunt chuckled

"Mars Flame Sniper!" the arrow of pure flame sped upwards, searing easily through the fluttering cellophane wing, causing the wing's bearer, already struggling to remain aloft on a single insect-wing, to plummet to the ground where she collapsed in a heap. The fallen woman stood slowly, seething with now-impotent wrath. She was a peculiar sight, wearing a head visor with large compact eyes, with short, curly antennae poking out of her short-cut brown hair. Her clothing was stranger: black and yellow stripes dominated the rest of her ensemble, with a revealing corset, long latex gloves and kneesocks, and formerly, black cellophane wings lined with yellow veins, though those had since been destroyed. Once she might have been beautiful, though now she was simply thoroughly disheveled, battle-scarred in her losing confrontation with the Sailor Senshi.
"This cannot be!" she spat

As he sat down, he felt a small box in his back pocket press against his butt. Yelping from pain, he jumped up. He reached into the pocket and took the box out. The box was a gift from her, but he haven't yet seen what was inside. Lifting the lid, he found a small snakeskin bracelet, dyed a deep blue. This bracelet looked really old and tribal. It had threads of yarn dangling from it, each end with a colored bead.
'Probably used for snake worshiping', he thought. His girlfriend did share a lot about Cambodian history during the time she was away.
He unclasped the bracelet, and put it on. It fitted on quite nicely, and Noah was pleased with it.
'Time to go shower then'. He got up from the sofa he was sitting on.
After taking a few steps, he suddenly lost control of his legs, and fell

Deep within the collective multiverse, there exists a single entity of unimaginable power, one that even the most powerful of gods within any world cannot destroy. It is known simply as The Orb of Desire, or just The Orb to some simpler folk. It bounces between the limitless universes randomly, never returning to the same one ever again. But other than that, what else makes this small glass ball all that special?
It grants wishes, that’s what.
Wishes that can bend reality to fit The Orb’s holder’s greatest desires. Its mere presence helps influence its holder to tell his or her deepest wishes, which the Orb will then grant. How it grants the wish, however, varies. In fact, some might even call the results random. Either way, things will change because of them. The reactions of the wishers vary just as much.
Maybe they’ll notice the changes. Maybe they’ll be the only ones. Heck, maybe they’ll be the only ones oblivious to the changes. It’s a spo

The door to his quarters slid open with a faint hiss, and Garadun stepped inside with his cat carrier in his arms. After the door closed he set the carrier on the floor and opened it. His two kittens, Wasp and Stinger, hesitated for a moment and then slowly crept out, looking around and sniffing.
“It’s okay, sweeties, it’s our old room,” he said and reached down and stroked them. This eased their anxiety and they began exploring. Garadun glanced around the cabin and sighed. His luggage hadn’t been delivered yet, but he wasn’t in a rush. Plenty of time for that later. Months, in fact.
The Fighting Fusiliers had completed their contract and finished their tour of duty garrisoning the world of Kolovraty. It had been highly successful. They had obliterated two groups of raiding pirates and made a lot of good friends with the Innsbruck Militia, the small local military unit.

From the black pest, to the Spanish flu; Ebola, or AIDS, Cancer... the list goes on.
But nothing compared to the Blue Flower disease.
The first cases appeared a bit over a year ago, a group of tourists going back from an expedition in Africa suddenly burst in flames at the airport, being reduced to no more than ashes within seconds.
For weeks no one knew what had produced it, or if it hadn't been actually some kind of terrorist attack.
That is, until several more people in England suffered a same fate near a bus station.
Around that moment, the scientists managed to uncover an entirely new and unique virus among the ashes of the diseased. Not a week latter of this second i

The city looked like a war zone, because it was. Buildings were damaged and scorched, most of the windows were blown out, rubble lay in piles on the streets, and burnt-out vehicles littered the roadways. Smoke drifted from many of the structures and ash was in the air. There was no sign of life – but that didn’t mean it wasn’t there.
Moving as cautiously as she could in a ten-meter-tall robot, Sayuki edged her Panther around the corner of an apartment building riddled with bullet strikes and into the street. She turned the ‘Mech’s head back and forth, scanning, and kept its right arm – which was equipped with a PPC – raised and ready to fire. The street seemed clear apart from all the debris. Stepping over a destroyed van, she continued her way forward.
“See anything yet, baby?” came Ian’s voice from the comm system.

He looked sadly at the violin as he let his fingers slowly slid over the surface of the instrument. He then grabbed the neck of the violin with one hand and the base of it with the other and carefully took it out from it's case. Thereafter he picked out the bow. In the end, Martin Padway failed to bring about a full-blown scientific revolution: scientific revolutions require new ways of thinking as well as accumulated knowledge, and Martin, an archeologist rather than a historian of science, did not succeed in changing enough 6th-century minds in 20th century minds for the technological revolution he began to become self-sustaining. His post-death canonization did not help, either: science would evolve only slowly and through many reversals and setbacks.
Although after innumerable trials and failures he succeeded in producing high-quality gunpowder, and further trial and error (and a lot of fatalities from explosions) finally produced good cannon, attempts at individual hand-held weapons remained somewhat iffy at the time of his death. As for the steam engine, the limits of 6th century engineering combined with Martin's somewhat shaky ideas as the physical construction of such a device insured that steam-powered machines

It was a fine autumn day, and Olivia Herald was walking through the forest on her way home from school. Life was good for her: she'd finished her tests, had turned in an English paper, and had been on timeto all her classes for once. And it seemed that nature agreed with her. The sun was shining, Sentrets and Furrets played in the sunlight, and Hoppips were flying through the air in bliss.
"What an utterly perfect day!" she said, glancing around her at the wonderous spectacle of nature. "On a day like this, how could anything possibly go wrong?"
While on any other day her statement would have been correct, today it was in error. What Olivia didn't know was that several yards away from her current position was a den, in which three orphaned Eevee kits lived. The first, and oldest kit had fur that was a stormy gray color, and this earned him the name of Stormfur. The second and third kits were twins named Earthpaw and Browneyes. When Stormfur was

Why Free Market Capitalism FailsIn this essay, I expose the flaws in the two mechanisms that are supposed to power the free market: Adam Smith's invisible hand and trickle down economics. The notion of the invisible hand holds that in a free marketplace, the buyer's self-interest will tend to drive the price down, while the seller's self-interest will tend to drive the price up, so that both parties' self-interest will naturally cause the price to settle on an amount that both find reasonable. Trickle-down economics maintains that the rich are the ones who start and expand businesses and hire employees, so the laws should favor them increasing their wealth as much as possible so they can hire more people, thus growing the economy. Why Free Market Capitalism Fails3 years ago in Philosophical More Like This

Chapter 01: Celebration
Kayden Ackart's wife almost lost her husband. Even now, each lightning flash and thunder boom reminded him of the muzzle-flashes and claps from autocannon fire. Each one could have killed him, leaving her a widow with a baby on the way. To think that he followed in his father's footsteps when he lived in his own mother's womb--what went through his mind? How could a father-to-be still fight a war? Not want to quit and return home?
He shook his head, hanging it down just a little as he applauded with the rest of the crowd. Award, after award, after promotion, after award; Ackart clapped with the others around him, feeling the sting of both hands slapping each other. Even a smile hid his dead face when he looked back up, killed during the fight only a week before.
As lightning flashed through the vents from outside, the memories continued to flood in as if like rain that forever washed the planet Marduk during winter; washing over his mind and bo
