How to become popular on deviantART(The following "guide" is based on my own experience, but it's not meant to be taken seriously)
Alright everyone! You wanna know how to become popular on deviantART? Then follow these easy steps and you'll reach popularity in no time!
Change your usernameMake a new account
Whoops, sorry. I thought deviantART had a username-change system, but it doesn't. Looks like you'll have to start over and make a new account! Transfer your faves and the people you watch, because you need a good username if you want to be taken seriously here, and making a new account is the only option for now.
Make sure not to choose the name of an anime character and a bunch of random numbers as your username (naruto12345), choose one that's easy to remember and defines your person. Because seriously, who chooses a random word and random numbers as their username?
Step 2: Start making art
The site is called deviantART
WIN POINTS- The winnersTHE POINT WINNERS ARE:WIN POINTS- The winners4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I'll be doing another journal like this really soon, so watch out for this.
The 'winners' will be receiving their points really soon
I just realised I have and I'm never going to buy anything on dA. So I decided to give most of them away!
Here's what you have to do:
FAVE THIS JOURNAL
For every 30 faves(or less if this doesn't get faved too much!), a random person out of these 30 will get some . It might be 10, 20, 30, I don't know, I haven't decided yet. I'll list the 'winners' as I go along.
Please do not fave/unfave because I'll be keeping a list of usernames as this gets faved(if it gets faved at all )
:iconprosaixplz: Your time starts now :iconprosaixplz:
EDIT: First few winners coming soon!
EDIT2: Lol looks like I'm one of these people

Pay the PayPal FeesHave you seen someone take commissions with the following in their terms: you must pay the PayPal fee (calculate it at a site like http://www.ppcalc.com)?Pay the PayPal Fees4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Every time I run across someone with those terms, I tell them this is against PayPal's terms of service. Some respond 'oh, okay' and remove it, others argue with me and say it's not against their terms. One person has said they will refuse to work on the commission unless I do pay the fees.
I contacted PayPal directly regarding this to get final word on whether this is a violation or not.
Here is my question:
When I am shopping online, I often see people have a rule that if you pay with PayPal, you have to calculate the "paypal fee" and add that on top of the price of the product or service. Some people will refuse to ship or work if they do not receive the "full amount" (without the paypal fee added in).
Is it against the paypal terms of service for these people to do this? What should I tell them
[CONTEST OVER] My Best Friends Contest!Last day to enter! If you haven't yet and are considering entering, this is your last day to do so! The contest ends on the 3rd of August![CONTEST OVER] My Best Friends Contest!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
EDIT: When submitting entries to the contest, please specify in the title of the deviation that they're for this contest, or in the description.
EDIT: You can only enter new images made specifically for this contest. We've had a lot of people enter stuff that they've done months ago, which therefore don't count. Any deviations submitted to DA before the contest was made won't be accepted.
It's summer time and most people are now out of college, university and general schooling and thus have a chance to kick back and enjoy the summer. A lot of other contests are currently running that wish to seize upon this fact, and now we're going to be joining the masses with our first group contest entitled, “My Best Friends”. User SAB3600 has generously offered to contribute some excellent prizes.

Disclaimer: I'm no lawyer, I do not work for deviantArt, I'm merely someone who has been doing photomanips for quite a while and has taken the time to read quite a few articles on the topic. The views expressed hereunder are mine alone. They do not reflect any "official dA opinion" nor are they to be taken as "legal advice". Furthermore, you may live in a country that hasn't signed any of the treaties that govern international copyright law, so you'd have to check with your country's national laws.
I strongly urge you to not only read the journal, but also the comments underneath it as there are a lot more examples of what you can and can't do as well as more links to information being shared by your fellow deviants!
What is Copyright?
I'll paraphrase/quote the wikipedia article on the topic for this:

Hello Everybody and welcome to my Stamp making guide. You may be wondering, why is TheSaltyMonster making a stamp guide? Well the answer is because a lot of people have been asking me how I make my stamps, and how to get started. So here it goes, and pardon the journal title. Please also check out the stamp feature towards the end of the journal
If you use any of the resources I have included in this journal, make sure to credit the original artist in your deviation description
How to get started..
Well, first things come first: What do you want to make a stamp about? Is it dA related, is it of your favorite TV show, or food? Or is it just an inspirational quote?
This is absolutely the first step in planning.
Is your message funny, girly, cute, serious? Depending on the type of message you're going to be portraying, you need to choose an appropriate stamp:
Underappreciated MammalsClass Mammalia contains a lot of the world's favorite megafauna--tigers, lions, wolves, elephants, zebras, dolphins, etc--so it's easy to see how "less charismatic" species get overlooked, not just in the public eye but in the scientific realm too. Rodents and bats contribute to over half of all mammal species, but the majority of mammalogists work with carnivores or ungulates, particularly game species. Here are some very cool mammal species that need more time in the public eye. Some are common, some are rare, and some are near extinction, but all could use a bit more appreciation.Underappreciated Mammals3 years ago in Art Features More Like This

The Problem With Character SheetsAlright, there are some pretty awesome character sheets out there. I don't personally use them, but I've seen others make them work. I'm not here to dispute the fact that they've got some utility, but I am here to point out one big problem with relying on a list of traits—which is generally how character sheets present these things—to define your character. The Problem With Character Sheets2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
(Note: This also applies to Mary Sue tests. 'Not a Mary Sue' just means your character isn't a perfect storm of coincidence. It has nothing to do with likeability or even believability. <insert dictator here> isn't a Mary Sue, either.)
I think this approach is, if it's the only approach you take to figuring out a character, a really bad idea.
Take a moment to think about your best friend. What's their favorite food? What are they good at, and what are things they do that make you Google good places to dump a body?

Today we are looking at the Literature gallery, with our Top Tips.
Before you start
READ the piece all the way through.
Read it again, making notes of what you would like to point out in your critique.
Stay Objective- you are critiquing the piece not the person.
These tips are areas which aren't just necessary in critiquing others' work, but also when self-critiquing your own writing. This is one person's suggestions and I welcome any further tips in addition.
A good opening. The opening to any form of writing doesn't necessarily need to involve a physical explosion, but it needs to have an initial hook; something to entice the reader in. It needs to be clear, something that

According to deviantART's hq, "deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results (ie. front page) is known as Fair Exposure. The goal is to maximize the display of the most popular deviations in a variety of topics with Fair Exposure, the community is exposed to a varied cross-section of deviantART. "
What this boils down to is that certain art categories have inherent ranking advantages and others inherent ranking disadvantages on front page as a means of ensuring that a variety of works from across deviantART are visible on front page and not just that of one category. Sounds pretty good right?
Well let me say before I continue that I do not know deviantART's actual mathematical algorithm for front page ranking. However, I think that anyone who notices the composition of front pages (whether 8 hour or 24, main or by category) and the statistics of the pieces that populate those fronts pages can give you a pretty good guess.

It's All About Presentation (Mostly)As more and more people start taking pictures of their nether regions on their iphones or posing myspace style in front of their HTC's - the competitive world of getting a Daily Deviation gets just that much harder... I kid. But... daily, I am bombarded with awesome suggestions (which I love) and I'm not complaining about. But there has to be a criteria of sorts, that sets an image above the rest. Here are a few things I look for that you might not have noticed before... The first thing I look at when I stumble across an image or view a suggestion from somebody, is how the artist has presented their work to the deviantART Community. It's All About Presentation (Mostly)3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Your image isn't everything. Not anymore. In the past I have given Daily Deviations to pieces with titles that are a combination of random letters and numbers, or that are very obviously still the source file title - or that tends to be just a keyboard mash-up. Everyday CVs are sent many many notes suggesting pieces o

(Please note, I'm not necessarily talking about deviantart's critique system, though this certainly applies to it. I'm talking about all feedback, whether in comments or notes, in person, or on another site. Deviantart simply has a good format for others to leave feedback to an artist.)
In art school, you tend two get two different types of young artists: people who are infatuated with their work, and people who have no confidence in it at all. But really, it all boils down to the same thing: as artists, we are incredibly reliant on other people's judgement of our work for our self-esteem. It sounds a bit stupid, but I don't know that I've talked to any serious business artists who say otherwise (though if you do, please tell me). Artists often view their work as an extension of themselves, or their soul, poured out on paper. We seek other people's approval, b

Take the time to realize this is aimed at commissioners, not artists. Yes, there are a ton of things artists fuck up on, trust me, I know. Oh, I know. However that alone could be a whole 'nother journal- which I might go ahead and do because I've had frustrating experiences with artists. When I'm talking about bad commissioners here though, I'm talking about the worst of the worst. Why on earth do I think a timid question 3 weeks after your commission was accepted asking about how it's going is "badgering"?
These are things I've witnessed, I'm talking about the horribly entitled, belittling, superior attitude commissioners! The ones that send you a billion notes and PMs asking when their art will be done, and rudely, when it's only been 3 days! So no, I'm not saying artists should step all over you- because trust me, some will. And by god, they sh

I can't remember the source, but a few years ago I read this famous author's account of how it felt to have his first book come out, and he mentioned buying a copy himself because he was afraid no one would take an interest. Now this is a guy who managed to get not only an agency but a publisher (which is a whole pile of people who were like yesplz), and he's still afraid readers won't care. I was like, 'whoa mind blown.'
But anyway, the fact is that we are all strangers on the Internet and, by default, there is no reason for you to read my stuff or vice-versa. If you went and stood in Times Square with copies of your latest story, how many people would give you more than a passing glance? And how many of those people would get to the end of your work, and how many of those would offer critical feedback?
And, if you were one of the passersby, whom would you stop for?
Okay, I'm done scaring the shi

Do you know the times when you put in a lot of effort and time into a deviation; however it does not get the attention that you think it deserves? This is a very common occurrence that deviants experience. You would like it if people commented on your work, for example, like expressing their opinions and critiques. However you see that there are very few comments for your deviation. Do you wish that you could do something to make your user page more appealing for other deviants to have an incentive to view your art? This guide might be able to help you by informing you of some simple tips and techniques. And hopefully these tips and techniques can give deviants more of an incentive to view and comment on your art, and possibly watch you also.

Relatively recently, Xehara, a deviant who wants to change her username posted a deviantART Suggestion here which got a Daily Deviation. I was a suggester, which shows that I am in full support of this idea.
On this Suggestion, I commented the following:
"I like this suggestion, but I know that dA's thing is that they don't want to confuse people by having people's profile links broken. So, I was thinking that instead of putting your old username back open for anyone to get, you pay the fee to have it disabled and whenever someone goes to that link, it redirects to your new page (like with Skittleboi redirecting to Josh)!"

How to REALLY become PopularHow to REALLY become Popular5 years ago in Academic Essays More Like This
Is it really worth it chasing after that meaningless "page view" count? Or is page views a synonym for popularity? Sure, we all want more watchers, but how much more? If you type the word "popular" in the DA search engine you will get a long stream of deviations bashing popular artworks and artists. I mean hey! It's easy to say "My art is 10 times better then that crap on the front page!", and it's okay to say that funnily enough, because art is subjective. But what's not okay to say is "I deserve to be more popular then them it's unfair!" the reason why they are more popular than you is because they know the "method".
Everybody's method is different find yours
What is this "method?" you must be thinking. The method is essentially their own way to gain awareness, sounds silly doesn't it? Most of the biggest artists on DA never asked to be popular; it just came to them naturally. Yet regardless, subconsciously they knew which deviations to upload would make a big hit.
