The results of Draw Tom Ripley contest
It has been 4 and a half months since I started holding my first contest Draw Tom Ripley Contest which is a long journey full of new experiences. The origin is just an idea to cope with many deviants who kept asking me for points since I won 5,000 points from Plan Gone Wrong Contest last year. I told them to draw me Tom Ripley first and I'd give them some points in return. After I had got 2 pieces, I started to think "why not make it as a contest? It's gonna be fun."

My 2 cents about educationON THE SUBJECT OF SCHOOLS, I FELT COMPELLED TO CHIME IN. If you can afford an expensive school then take it if you like but if you can't then obviously don't go to an expensive school. Just like you wouldn't buy a car you couldn't afford. My 2 cents about education2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The best thing about the "good" schools are the students because when you hear a school is great everybody flocks there, including many of the most talented... but notice I said "many" and not "all" the most talented.
"Superstars" can come from city, any shape, any color, ANY AGE. We've seen it many times before.
The best way to cultivate talent is to interact with other talented or potentially talented people. It just makes us all work even harder. I had the great fortune of being in the same school and year with Pixar's James Robertson, Dani Strijleva, Ben Su and John Lee. And these are just a handful of the very talented people from my year. Just by being in the same class, this has influenced me to work harder than ever when I really didn't w
I met Phil CoulsonOnce apon a time I went to see Captain America, when I left the theater this random guy pops out of a corner right in front of me and this was our conversation:I met Phil Coulson3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Guy: So did you like the movie!?
Me: ...Yeah, it was really good... (.__.;
Guy: I KNOW! What was your favorite part!?
Me: Hard say... it was all really good...
Me: Well I have to go *Shuffles away* (>_>)
Guy: Ok... *goes back and waits for the next group of people to leave the theater*
Later that day me and my friends were cracking up making jokes about how that guy was a weirdo fanboy nerd and that talking we had was probably the highlight of his week (Of couse we didn't really mean it, that would just be messed up).
But just know I realized... that guy was Phil Coulson... in disguise.... and I feel really bad...
Apparel Collection: Monster TalkTogether, we are deviantART, an amazingly diverse community of fantastic individuals from all reaches of the globe. It’s a beautiful, creative ecosystem where the wildest voices can speak their minds and share their expressions. When designing this collection, I wanted to celebrate that diversity. When you’re at a concert, on an airplane, or sitting at a café, it's sometimes fun to look at the people moving and talking around you, each with their own unique style and outlook. Be part of the big conversation, where all voices matter and everyone can be involved.Apparel Collection: Monster Talk2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The characters in this piece spawned from a conversation I had while teaching a high school class on character illustration. The topic was making interesting-looking characters, and everyone seemed to agree that you have to make a complex contour shape in order to satisfy the goal. I countered by simply drawing a line of jelly bean shapes on the board. At first, it looked boring -- just a bunch of wonky

fandom things I don't understandIf there are two things I don't understand with fandoms it's when:fandom things I don't understand3 years ago in Personal More Like This
1) People say "so-and-so doesn't get enough love" or "this character could use more attention" when it's actually one of the most popular characters in the fandom and you can find at least six billion pieces of fanart or material related to said character by doing one search alone.
2) People think they're "special" or "just weird like that ^__^" for liking 'psycho' characters. The "lol yea im sort of different becuz my fetish is crazy guys/chicks/characters and i guess that makes me strange lolol xD" variety.
Because seeing at least ten million characters, original or established, with the same 'tude grin, blood-covered mouth, goffick or scene attire, and "i-will-lick-this-bloody-knife-to-show-how-hardcore-i-am" generic anime "crazy person" pose is something you'd never find in a million years.
Actually, no. I do understand. I just think it's dumb.
That is all.
Edit: To prevent misunderstanding, that's not to say there

Missiles, military service and HamasWarning: This is a serious journal about a serious issue.Missiles, military service and Hamas2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Last week I've been recruited to the military once again as part of an emergency operation regarding Gaza. I was just about to return to my apartment after a tiring school day, when I got this emergency phone call from my commander, telling me I have to pack my stuff and go to the south as far as I can. I had to put on my old uniform, go to the far south, to a city called Be'er Sheva, and "report from the fire field" where the Hamas sent their missiles to. Some of you may have noticed that the relations between Israel and Gaza are not so great...I saw their missiles blowing up right above me during my service, I heard the alarm and explosions all around me. It was a very interesting experience, I tell you that...
I really don't want to get into politics, but I want everyone to know that people in the southern cities of Israel got hurt, buildings have been damaged, schools had to be closed so children would not be a
An Introduction To Fine MetalworkingCommunity WeekAn Introduction To Fine Metalworking1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Co-written by melzika!
Fine metalworking is most often considered a medium for jewelry making, although it can be used for other works as well. Many artists have made wall pieces, sculptures, reliquaries, vessels, and other less traditional works with metals. Fine metal is a very versatile and exciting medium that challenges the artist to create beautiful works of art from something that, at first glance, might seem very hard, rigid and unforgiving. Fortunately crafters have been working with metals throughout history, and contemporary artists can still rely on the techniques of those pioneers to see metals in a new light - as soft, malleable and functional.
This article will introduce you to some of these basic metalworking techniques. This is in no way meant as a tutorial, and reading this article won’t qualify you to begin working immediately in metals. There are a lot of safety precautions involved in working wit
this movie, omg... "Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki"this movie, omg...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
watch it. It's amazing, seriously.
(image found on Tumblr: http://evangelizer.tumblr.com/post/43670310560 )
It's about werewolves, yes, but not cheesy, stupid Twilight "werewolves" or whatever... These are my new favorite type of werewolves, and I'll probably never think of werewolves as vicious bad-guys ever again.
This was a beautiful story of a mother and her two children. I loved the story, really did. I even sort of started wanting to have kids on my own as well I mean, Ami and Yuki were so sweet, and funny, and realistic - personality and behavior wise.
And their mother was a fantastic character. I really, really liked how she was portrayed.
I could go on about how much I just loved this movie.. But I'll shut up and just recommend it to you all instead.
Do yourself a favor, and watch this incredible movie
'Jack The Giant Slayer', or 'Women Are Useless'So I just got back from watching Jack the Giant Slayer. The verdict? Flawed and corny at times, but a lot of fun.'Jack The Giant Slayer', or 'Women Are Useless'2 years ago in Personal More Like This
BEWARE: MILD SPOILERS TO FOLLOW
- The film does well with the scope and design of its worlds. They're nothing on the level of something like Lord of the Rings, but you buy the fantasy world and the mythos behind it.
- The supporting characters are a hell of a lot of fun. Stanley Tucci hams it up like a motherfucker as the king's shady advisor, and Ewan McGregor and Ian McShane are badass as the captain of the guard and the king respectively. The giants are fun too, and to my surprise, they didn't follow the modern concept of trying to humanize them; these giants are classic fairy tale monsters every step of the way, and I honestly liked that.
- The film kept surprising me in how they handled character deaths. Many characters died way earlier than I expected them to, keeping me guessing as to what would happen next. Though honestly, I just spent the

Due to Twitter's updated API and the removal of their first API, which was the original foundation for deviantART's Twitter Widget, the Twitter Widget for Profile Pages has been updated to match Twitter branding. The widget now displays retweets with the icon of the person you've retweeted, and images can be shown in-line, so that deviants don't have to click through to see images you're sharing.

Back to School and Accepting CriticismI am sick to death of people bitching to me that I can't accept criticism.Back to School and Accepting Criticism3 years ago in Personal More Like This
And I'm tired of people thinking that I don't WANT constructive feedback or that I block anyone who "offers" it.
But because I'm tired of writing long defense journals trying to open people's eyes to what I think is noticeable improvement on my part.... we're gonna try something a little different.
I think the best way to tell if I am accepting criticism is to SEE it in action. So this is what I'm gonna do. Each week I am going to post something I'm working on, be it a page from a comic, an illustration, or whatever. I'm gonna start with the pencil sketches and I'm going to allow everyone everywhere to critique it.
But hang on... I don't just want people writing longwinded essays pointing out what's wrong with it and how to improve...
I'm a visual learner and I need to see what I am doing wrong in order to get better. You'll be able to download it and draw on it, resubmit it as a link in a comment, redraw it ent

Please this article to spread the word
WHY IS THIS CONTEST BEING HELD?
This contest is being held to raise awareness of The Undershaw Preservation Trust (UPT). They are vigourously working toward saving Undershaw (the home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer of the Sherlock Holmes stories) from development and preserving it as Conan Doyle's home for future generations of Doyleans, Holmesians/Sherlockians, and literary fans of all kinds. Go to "A Brief History of Undershaw" on their website to find out what has happened to ACD's former home.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
We are creating a montage of Sherlock Holmes fans showing their support for the UPT's cause. When the project closes (May 6th) the montage will then be sold as a print (not on DeviantART) and ALL profits will go to the future of Undershaw

Fandom Abuse (WARNING: RANT)All right. Clearly this is going to be a rant. Look out, I like to rage.Fandom Abuse (WARNING: RANT)3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So, as I was looking through my 200 watch messages today, I found a deviation that kind of insulted me. I'm not going to name what it was or who made it, but I can say I'm not happy. It was a Loki drawing, a decent one. The deviation itself didn't annoy me, it was the description, which said something like this:
"I don't like Loki but if this gets me the views I so rightly deserve then there."
NO. Just, no.
The italicized part is what I laugh about. If you feel you deserve views, submit the art that you like doing to groups that accept the sort. Doing a piece of art just for the sake of publicity is twisted and desperate, in my opinion.
That is a blatant abuse of a fandom. If you draw Loki, Percy Jackson, YFM or basically anyone or anything that has a fanbase solely for the sake of views, get out of my sight. EVEN IF YOUR WORK IS THE BEST THING I'VE SEE

Birds are fascinating creatures. Many of them possess incredible abilities. For example, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds migrate 500 miles non-stop with their tiny wings, and Chickadees are able to remember exactly where they stashed their seeds in up to a hundred hiding places for a month!
Several species are in decline and are at risk of extinction due to habitat loss, pollution and other reasons. See what you can do to help here: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/conservation
