Dear ArtistsSorry I've been distant lately, it's hard to explain, but I can't deny I appreciate the encouragement I receive here from every one of you... it always helps... whatever my questions, and reservations, doubts and fears, I always come back here and find a reason to keep going and it means a lot to me... it seriously does. I found this online, it's from a favorite Photographer I follow, and it's awesome advice, and I thought it was worth sharing... here's the link to his blog
For Jennifer, Whomever You Are.
Jennifer is a composite of all the students who’ve asked me to look at their work online and offer some advice. My advice has changed over the years.
I’m a second-year photography student. Would you look at my work and offer me any advice?
Thank you for the invitation to spend some time with your work. I know

BalanceI think life is such a delicate balance between confidence and self doubt, but rather than straddle that line, I seem to meander along it like a drunk person failing a sobriety test.Balance2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I have a poster in my office of a quote from Henry David Thoreau "Live the Life you have Imagined."
I try to remember that whenever I'm discouraged. Inevitably I let self doubt wash over me, and I start to wonder why I put so much time, money, and hope into something that may just end up being a hobby. Hobbies are Necessary, but if this dream fails to manifest into reality, it will feel like a colossal disappointment. Anyway, enough with the negative... whenever I start to get down, God throws me a blessing, it's literally like I'm being reminded that life isn't supposed to be given to you, that's not how success works... keep going, keep learning, keep growing, and keep smiling! Good Things always come.

What does your username mean?
My username came from my gaming handle which was always 'Moonbeam'. I chose something girly and harmless so people wouldn't think I was any good (I was devious back then too). When I joined DeviantArt the name was already taken so I shoved my favorite number at the end and tada!
Describe yourself in three words.
Compassionate, Organized and Adventurous.
Are you left or right handed?
Fun fact: I started left handed and switched to my right when I was younger. As a result, I tend to be left-handed when playing sports but I use my right to write -- it can be confusing.
What was your first deviation?

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”
What an awesome quote.
by the NumbersI wanted so bad to just be constantly responding yesterday, but I had to work Afternoon turn, and anyone who's ever worked turns can tell you, it sucks. Every week a different sleep schedule, a different routine. I can't wait to break free of this job. I need to create, to be free to explore, I feel it, everyday that feeling gets stronger. I have all these ideas and dreams, but I hesitantly move forward, little by little, convincing myself that the end of one chapter is literally only a few pages away and the beginning of a whole new book is about to begin. I want to believe that so bad!! I do believe it.by the Numbers1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Anyway, I came here a few years ago, I got to know a lot of amazing people, I tried to remain anonymous, but it's just not my nature, I either open up with people or I stay completely quiet. Inevitably I started to open up, which scared me within the context of this project which is quite vulnerable. I let that internal conflict eat away at me and I left. It became a cycle for awhile.

I've been reading this book, and it's so on point and Inspiring! I'm sure it would speak to every artist I know, which is why I'm sharing that quote right now, and recommending this book to all of you!
I'm not sure what it is about the struggle, about the fear, but as an artist, it's something that constantly consumes me.
It's not even based in reality, it's a million made up scenarios in my head, simply possibilities, that if I were smart, I wouldn't even allow to occupy space in my mind.
I feel like the Universe is speaking to me lately though, almost like I'm being pushed onto the dance floor, reluctantly at first, but slowly my inhibitions are falling away one by one, and I'm actually emb

Gratitude Day 1Be Thankful. Be Grateful.Gratitude Day 110 months ago in Personal More Like This
I heard a podcast the other day about happiness it was from an author named Shawn Achor. He offered some amazing insights and advice. Here's the Ted Talk,
the podcast I heard was different and more recent, but this is short and interesting too. One of the exercises to train your brain to be happier and more positive was a 21 day challenge to write down 3 gratitudes. As I was listening to the podcast I instantly thought of you guys, and my struggles with this project, and fighting depression and fear; and decided I wanted to share this here. Not just the information, but I actually wanted to experience this with you guys. In the podcast he mentioned how happiness is contagious, how we feed off of each other and I thought maybe it would be cool to start this here, to be open and honest and real with all of you and if my thought process transforms and positivity takes hold and succes

"To help us bring benefit to others through our words and actions, it is useful to cultivate an attitude of sympathetic joy in others’ achievements and good fortune. This attitude is a powerful antidote against envy, which is not only a source of unnecessary suffering on the individual level but also an obstacle to our ability to reach out and engage with others. " -Dalai Lama
Those are some pretty awesome words aren't they? Think about that for a second, now think about it how it relates to you as an artist. Look beyond the "how many favs did I get on this" and instead look at what is around you, what others are creating, photographing, capturing and be inspired from what you see, not envious because someone got that pat on the back which you didn't get. If you see something which you like, tell the artist, let them know exactly what you like in the piece and what stands out the most to you. Little words like those
New Username Symbols: The JourneyA New Road to TravelNew Username Symbols: The Journey2 years ago in Personal More Like This
When I was first approached with the project to redesign and replace our user symbols I was naturally quite shocked. For those of us who've been part of deviantART for a long while, changing the username symbols seemed like changing the colour of the sky, or asking everyone to suddenly start walking backwards, right? It seemed like such a fundamental part of what deviantART is that it was hard to take on board. But then really, when you think about it, the old symbols were meaningless at face value. And that, my dear friends, is exactly why we set about looking at rethinking them.
Think about when you first found and joined deviantART. Did any of the symbols make sense? Did you stop and think "what is this ~ before my name and why is it there?" Maybe, but possibly you're probably like me and just kinda accepted it because that's the reality presented to you. After a while, though, you'd have seen the * and maybe even a ` or ^ an

and as i watch each flake of you fall from my hands
teach me how to fall gracefully
teach me how to hide in the atmosphere
and you're an empty helicopter
with only the wind to rescue
and when the wind comes
you can land anywhere
and anywhere can be the sea
and the sea can be the memory
that there is no rift between anywhere
and you are an ampersand
with no nouns to stand between
you connect all the spaces
there are no words for
your molecules are continents with no name
their coastlines know
that there is no such thing as discovery
and your breath of knowledge
can be the library of the wind
let the current take you wherever you need to go
and just know, that if you were to collide with concrete
it is not a crash
it is but a silent whispering in your own bones
buried under the earth's skin
and you are home
you are home.
ARTISTIC NUDES AND FETISHGallery Info: Artistic NudeARTISTIC NUDES AND FETISH4 years ago in Personal More Like This
High quality fine art photography that makes use of a nude or partially nude human subject.
That is how deviantArt defines Artistic Nudes which for me is vague. I feel there should be more definition than that, that it should help the users submitting to the gallery determine if it's porn or not. How would we do that, though? How could we redefine it if at all?
How would you define "Artistic Nude"?
:iconquietchildae: This one might get me in trouble with some people, but... I don't. What's art to me isn't art to someone else, what's my cup of tea, other people think is pornography. I also strongly believe that everyone has to start out somewhere, and while they might not be doing gorgeous black and white, beautifully composed and lit images, who knows what they might be capable of in the future? Rather than telling someone their work isn't art, I prefer to encourage people in improving their craft. Of course, with nudit
Nude in anonymityI've been approached by a model who poses nude with the stipulation that her identity be concealed - she has a successful fashion modeling career and judges that nudity is not supportive. I had originally declined due to the constraint. However after a second contact I gave it some thought.Nude in anonymity3 months ago in Personal More Like This
My vision is fairly straightforward - and I realized it was more constrained than many of the photographers that I admire.
Perhaps an additional constraint will force me to see differently. I have, of course, over the years made images that do conceal the model's identity. It was sometimes required.
And sometimes it was an artistic decision.
But in looking back through my catalog of images I find anonymous nudes are really quite rare in my work.
I am very inspired by a number of Deviant Artists. In particular there is a set of nude self-portraitists whose work
