Exploring IndustrialThis time around we are looking at Industrial Photography within the Urban and Rural Photography Gallery.Exploring Industrial2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's a simple term and it pretty much explains itself. Industrial is factories, industrial areas, cranes, machinery
and so on.Quite often you can mix industrial Photography with Urban Exploration -
The two often go hand in hand.
The use of photographs to depict industrial activity and products began in the 1850s and 1860s.
Few firms employed their own photographers, but commissioned independent operators, or
employees who could use a camera.

Industrial photography cannot be tied to a particular aesthetic or function. There are innumerable
links with other branches of the medium, such as portraiture, reportage, and architectural and
advertising photography.
Industrial images hold a history, a world that many of us w

“I can’t tell you how many pictures I’ve missed, ignored, trampled, or otherwise lost just ‘cause I’ve been so hell bent on getting the shot I think I want.”
-Joe McNally-
I recently blogged about Joe McNally and his book The Moment It Clicks. I've not yet read it but it's on my Birthday list for April. However I have read some of the quotes from inside the book - one in particular is the 'pause for thought' for this article this week. As some of you might know I'm taking part in the 365 day Photography Challenge and I would thoroughly recommend it to anybody who wishes to think outside the box and get more creative with their photography. How many times do we ignore, trample or loose the real one in a million shot bec

So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many others who deviate to be recognised in the crowd.
Today, we present to you the following deviants who have all been awarded Seniority as part of our 11th birthday celebrations. They have all been nominated

1. Daily Deviations
Recently, I announced changes to Daily Deviations in this journal and I'm happy to say that the response has been favorable. To review, we have made the following changes:
a> The "3-month rule" is now the "6-month rule" meaning an artist cannot receive another DD if they have had one in the last 6 months.
b> Daily Deviation selectors are limited to a maximum of one selection per day. This has been put in place to focus on quality vs quantity.
The hard-coding of these new guidelines is now in place (special thanks to $ZombieCoder for that).
These changes are part of an ongoing initiative to better our Dai

Project Educate: Composition BasicsThe action of putting things together; formation or construction.Project Educate: Composition Basics2 years ago in Community Relations More Like This
The term composition simply means 'putting together' and is applied to all forms of art. In this respect, composition is all about the placement, arrangement or organisation of the individual elements within a photo. The composition of a photograph is what catches the viewer's attention and is what makes the image pleasing to the eye. By practicing and developing basic composition techniques, you can produce pieces of work which can recreate the impact of the original scene.
Some tips for developing composition skills are;
Look around using the viewfinder every time you take a picture.Look at each element and how it impacts the overall composition.Become familiar with your camera. Learn how it works, play around with settings and really get to know how each setting changes the overall image.Experiment and practice. Experiment and practice. Experiment and practice.Study other pieces of art; photogr

Presenting: Community VolunteersA BRIEF OVERVIEWPresenting: Community Volunteers2 years ago in Community Relations More Like This
Over the years, we've been proud to offer the opportunity to volunteer with deviantART. We believe that our volunteers play a crucial role in helping our community develop and grow in positive ways.
The Gallery Moderator (previously known as Gallery Director) and Message Network Admin (MN@) teams have become a much loved and appreciated role, with many volunteers proudly detailing their experience in applications to enter into successful careers with companies who all recognise the value of volunteering in such a vibrant and eclectic community. Did you know that some of our now full time Staff were once volunteers? $fourteenthstar, $Moonbeam13, $pachunka, $aunjuli, $y2jenn, $damphyr, `Tachy-on, $dxd and $Ikue all volunteered in various roles -- and we are all very proud of that fact!
Over the past few months, we've been taking a close look at the volunteer experience -- what's worked, what hasn't worked a

1. Reflections
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly a year can fly by. I've made it a practice over the years to sit back and reflect on the year, what went well, what didn't and where I'd like to see the new year go. A year can bring a lot of lessons and without reflection it's hard to ensure that you've taken away everything important from it. I apply this personally and to deviantART and it's that time again
A couple of fun highlights:I got to sit next to Felicia Day and help conduct our interview with her at SXSW. I'm a pretty big fan so this was very cool. Our presence at SXSW was also a v

Daily Deviations UpdateHappy Monday MorningDaily Deviations Update1 year ago in Community Relations More Like This
I started this morning by signing something "Moonbam13" so either this typo means I need more coffee, or this week is going to be BAMTASTIC!
I'm rooting for the latter
I wanted to post a quick update on changes to Daily Deviations. It is important to note that these changes have not been hard-coded so my team is manually following these new guidelines. This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated![]()
The following guideline changes are in effect:The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)
Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.
