No Women in eSports, and A Talk About SJWWomen segregated in eSports to “legitimize” the sportsNo Women in eSports, and A Talk About SJW1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I personally think that eSports is kinda a silly idea. The idea that video game competitions should be treated with the same respect as the Olympics is just... head scratching to me. But just because I personally don’t “get it” doesn’t mean I can’t support others who DO actually want to legitimize their hobbies or activities into being real things they can compete in.
However... if your way of “legitimizing” your eSport is to SEGREGATE WOMEN... you’re kinda shooting yourself in the foot. Earlier this week the International e-Sports Federation announced that it was going to separate it’s competitions into “male only” and “female only” groups... an act defended by the IEF as being (and I quote) “part of our effort to promote e-Sports as a legitimate sports”
Naturally, this ended up pissing a LOT
I don't fave watermarks.I’ve harped on about this before and I’m going to do it again…..and again and again…..until people stop doing it.I don't fave watermarks.6 months ago in Personal More Like This
I do not fave pictures that have watermarks right across them.
This isn’t me being monumentally arrogant and thinking that I alone faving a piece of work bestows upon it some kind of greatness. This is just me having an artistic eye.
If you’ve slaved to create the most astounding piece of work to have ever graced the galleries of deviantart, something that puts all your peers to shame and will remain a benchmark that others aim to match for years to come…..and then across the middle of it you decide to slap a watermark that you spent 5 minutes farting out: you just f**ked up your artwork. You have added something that detracts from my enjoyment of the piece and I’m not going to fave it.
There are a number of brilliant artists out there who I’m on the verge of unfollowing, simply because it irks me so much to see a
The E.T. Cartridge Landfill has been foundIn the early 1980’s the American video game industry bombed so spectacularly, that it was rumored Atari just dumped their unsold copies of E.T. in a landfill in the New Mexico desert. It’s been a longstanding folk tale of the modern video game industry. And now it’s been proven true. The E.T. Cartridge Landfill has been found1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Microsoft (of all companies) teamed up with a documentary filmmaker to go and explore the desert in the hopes of uncovering this legendary landfill of shitty games. And it looks like they were successful. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134045-E-T-Cartridges-Found-in-New-Mexico-Landfill-After-30-Years
As cool as this is... I can’t help but feel a little... disappointed. And more or less it’s because the hard working Angry Video Game Nerd left his post of doing regular updates to start filming an actual feature film with the plot being uncovering the mystery around the legendary E.T. landfill. The AVGN uprooted his home life, moved to California for a year, hired acto

Recently I found out that one of the commissions I undertook a while back was, in fact, a setup. It was hired by forum members of Encyclopedia Dramatica, one of whom I actually use to talk to and have good discussions with. They pooled their resources to pay for it, sent me the info and money, and then proceeded to sit back and document everything I did or didn’t do per their highly specific criterias. The user in question then posting a lengthy take-down (though through a disclaimer on the top of the journal it’s clearly not a takedown! lulz!) here on DA.
Here is the commission:
The journal in question talks at great length about my seemingly lack of transparency. IE: that I don’t communicate every little facet of what I’m doing to them, such as the number of commissions I have, what my “job” is, what my home schedule is like, etc. And honestly? This is WHY I’m not transpar
JUST MAKE COMICS!I’ve been getting a lot of complaints from people saying they don’t like all the “feminism” and “SJW” messages that I’ve been putting into my comics lately. They want me to just make comics that are fun and don’t have political meanings or messages behind them.JUST MAKE COMICS!9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Alright... I can get behind that. I understand that sometimes reiterating yourself on your political points can get a bit tiring, especially when you don’t yourself marinate in social justice issues 24/7. No problem!
Except... I haven’t really been doing that. Like, at all. These are the latest 27 comics and Illustrations I’ve made:
SYAC - BINGO by TomPreston NSYAC - Time After Time by TomPreston NSYAC - Winging It by TomPreston NSYAC - Crafty by TomPreston NSYAC - Dirty Fingers by TomPreston NSYAC - Premature Departure by TomPreston NSYAC - Less Is More by TomPreston NSYAC - Why Ask Why by TomPreston NSYAC - Listening In by TomPreston :thumb46741033
ParodiesSo here’s the thing. Ever since my “stop doing sexist things” joke in SYAC a while back, there have been a number of parody comics about me and my views floating around tumblr and DA. Granted, parody work of my stuff has been there since the very beginning of SYAC, but these are actual comics themselves not just reskins of my own art.Parodies1 year ago in Personal More Like This
And you know what? That’s perfectly fine. While I will flag work that takes my actual artwork and just changes the text to be derogatory, if you actually make the work yourself... then it’s fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. And while I may block people for being assholes to me or my fans, that doesn’t mean I actually want to “censor” their right to speak anywhere else on the internet.
In the past I have tried to use the law to take down certain things. For example, I tried to get KnowYourMeme to remove their user article about me, because it was obviously a carbon-copy of the E
Being Critical =/= HateLooks like I need to remind people about this again, as yesterday I got several comments in a row from people who assumed that me being critical about something automatically translated into me outright hating it. I don't know how to stress this enough but that's not the case... You can be critical of stuff you like and not hate it. I don't know why our culture tries so hard to force everything into such black and white terms but come on guys, really... being critical and smart about what you love doesn't mean you hate it.Being Critical =/= Hate2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Take the Dragon's Crown comic, for example, in which I was critical of the Sorceress's design. From that someone hypothesized that I must HATE the game, and that's farthest from the truth. I know full well that Vanillaware is an amazing studio and they do fantastic work. One of my favorite games of theirs is Muramasa the Demon Blade. Dragon's Crown has scored really highly and it's most definitely worth your money to buy/download it if you can. BUT... I can still be
A Brief History of Marvel's Film RightsSome people took interest in this from my last journal ( Spider-Man and the Avengers ) so I thought I’d try to explain it better here. Please keep in mind that this is a SUPER CONDENSED version of events that took place (starting 60 years ago) that led to the convoluted mess that is currently Marvel’s various film franchises. Also keep in mind that I will be using industry shorthand like saying “comic book industry” to refer to the American comic book industry giants of Marvel and DC, because that’s how we do things here. Anyway, here we go!A Brief History of Marvel's Film Rights10 months ago in Personal More Like This
“Seduction of the Innocent” comes out (a moral panic book which blames comics for kid’s wayward negative behavior), massive book burnings and censorship of comics ensues. Old comics burned or lost, thus increasing the value of the few comics that remain.

What do you think of reputations? As of this moment, the reputation of comic artist Randy Queen is being quickly eroded away to almost nothing within a matter of hours. The inciting incident of him issuing take down notices for a tumblr blog posting “corrections” of his artwork is doing more harm to him than if he just left it alone. But in the comments to the journal where I went into more detail about this whole debacle (link here if you’re interested: http://tompreston.deviantart.com/journal/Randy-Queen-vs-Eschergirls-473253186 ), I noticed a couple people wondering aloud why anyone really gives a crap about “reputations” in the first place. What do you think of reputations?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
So I thought that might be an interesting point of discussion here. Do you think reputations are important?
There’s a lot of evidence, in my opinion, that yes they are. If you (either as a person or a company) have good reputation, people are more willing to forgive you little mistakes or promote you when you do something right. But if you hav
Potentially Unpopular Musings Junk DrawerI’ve been saving up a bunch of topics I wanted to talk about, but for some reason haven’t been able to stretch out into full journal discussions. So I’m just gonna lump them all together here in one big “junk drawer” journal to get them out. I’d like to think that these aren’t “unpopular ideas” at all, and just common sense. But as I’ve learned about the internet just believing that women are people is considered a “controversial opinion” so... I’m just gonna lump these all under the idea of “potentially unpopular musings.”Potentially Unpopular Musings Junk Drawer1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Being 100% Objective is Impossible
If there’s one myth I wish I could dispel, it’s that criticism is suppose to be devoid of bias in favor of being objective. While this is a nice sort of unobtainable Buddhist enlightenment concept... it’s just not technically or realistically possible. Everything around us affects our mood, disposition, opi
Feminism in Comics and Gaming - What Would Happen?I’m genuinely curious. What exactly is it you fear would happen to gaming/comics/geek culture if feminism DID actually have it’s way and take everything over? I’m serious, I am curious as to what exactly about feminism or hell, even humanism, is so “scary” and what people seem to think will happen if they accept it.Feminism in Comics and Gaming - What Would Happen?11 months ago in Personal More Like This

Black and White Mindset? After the government shutdown post I made yesterday I started thinking about something... Is it at all possible that the reason why internet opinions and interactions are so blindly polarizing and extreme is because the American political system is so polarizing and extreme? Could the reason discourse online is so black and white be a result of being seeped in such black and white political mindsets for so long that we have difficulty breaking out of the mold?Black and White Mindset?2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Overthought, Underbaked: The Controversial New DA Logo
So, in response to requests for my thoughts on the new DA logo — and being disinclined to type the same response repeatedly — I will lay out my impressions here.
To paraphrase a certain swordsman: "You keep using that logo, but I do not think it conveys what you think it does."
The new logo is certainly clever, and as a designer — setting aside any resemblance to the platzkart.ru logo, accidental or otherwise — one can easily imagine the careful thought that went into its concept and execution, but...
If there is one thing that I took from my schooling in graphic design, it was the importance of clarity: of meaning, of import, of impression. This was true for any work, its composition, it layout, its style — its effective visceral message. Logo design, above all, is go

Don't let the low level graphics fool you. This is a seriously unique game and the retro feel and chiptune music all work together beautifully. It's kinda like crossing the level difficult insanity of Battle Kid with the exploration style gameplay of Metroid infused with the "no worries try again" aesthetic of Bit Trip Runner.
It's very difficult to describe this game but I'm gonna try anyway. The entire thing is built around the core mechanic of flipping gravity up and down. Your character cannot jump at all. The only way to move around is to flip gravity causing you to fall up or down. The level layouts are phenomenal at keeping you from getting too stuck or worried you might hit something bad, and there are plenty of checkpoints to ensure that you never have to

I can't help but feel sympathetic for them. They've made their mistakes in previous updates, but how do you think they must feel if they know they can't make a sensible update without getting major backlash?
I mean, come on people, you're getting riled up about stars. Things that the staff coded in order to allow newer users the benefit of actually understanding what the symbols mean at first. You may be asking me, "Why couldn't they just check out the FAQ instead to find out?". Most of us I'm assuming wouldn't figure to do this first, as it's only a small symbol - nothing that bothering. I honestly didn't realize there were symbols there until I started using :dev so-an-so:'s, about 6 months ago, and I've been here for 2 years.

It’s been a few hours, you’ve just been hanging there. You’ve been quiet, too quiet. Usually there’s music playing, or your foot steps could be heard. But today, you’re quiet. Your little sister, who doesn’t normally come to greet you because you lock yourself away, decides to see what you’re doing. She assumes you’re taking a nap, or doing some homework quietly. She runs up the stairs, eager to see, but she comes to an immediate halt. You’re not doing your homework, nor taking a nap. Your music isn’t playing and you aren’t walking around. You’re hanging there, completely still, now just like her. At this moment, her whole world shatters. Everything she has ever known, looked up to, loved, is hanging there by a thread. At this moment, her life has been changed forever. At this moment, she wishes sh

It’s all being taken very seriously by certain parties. Some scientists have approached the UN and asked for the issue to be addressed in a more formal capacity, with a hope that laws against these machines taking certain roles will be put in place. Specifically “killer robots”. They don’t want to see a machine deciding when it’s right to pull the trigger.
That concern is perfectly understandable, but there’s another that is less touched on: are robots getting too cute?
To Enable or Disable - THAT is the questionPewDiePie is closing comments on his YouTube videos. In his opinion the disconnect between YouTube personality and fans is too great, and most YouTube comments are worthless spamming, hating, or just plain garbage. While he has turned off comments before in protest of certain things, this time around he says comments are gone for good on all future videos uploaded to YouTube. You can watch his video describing this new change here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_hHKlEZ9GoTo Enable or Disable - THAT is the question11 months ago in Personal More Like This
What interests me about this, however, is the way in which people are reacting to it. A lot of people are saying “good!” or “YouTube comments are terrible, so I totally understand why he’d do that!” Which is a little surprising to me... because of Anita Sarkeesian.
Now we’ve talked about Anita Sarkeesian before. She makes feminist videos dissecting tropes about women in gaming. As a result of her doing this, she’s gotten ungodly amounts of backlash and hatred. Since her vid

Before you make that first cut, please keep in mind that you will find the pain release and the blood really addictive.
You may think to yourself that you’ll be able to control it, that you won’t let it get out of hand.
You may think that you can just stick to a few small, shallow cuts here and there that won’t be deep and that will heal quickly and easily.
But you’re wrong.
You can’t control it, it’s impossible to control. It controls you. It’s an addiction.
The cuts will get deeper, they’ll scar. They’ll take weeks and to months to heal and years for the scars to actually begin to fade.
Soon, you’ll depend on it. You can’t go more than a few days without cutting. You’ll go crazy as your skin itches and burns, your hands shake, your head pounds, your vision goes blurry as you try to keep your mind off of it, try to hold

The Downside to Internet Fame
This has been a topic on my mind a lot lately, especially over the recent Phil Fish controversy. In a lot of ways I find myself in the same shoes as Phil. My “reputation” online is not a very good one, and it often precedes me. No matter what website I go to, if I make an account and comment anywhere on the internet... those that dislike me will find me and make their presence known.
Part of the problem with being “famous” on the internet is that if you want to have a semblance of a normal life again, you essentially have to give up EVERYTHING that everyone else online takes for granted. I essentially have to give up twitter, Facebook, tumblr, DA, Pinterest, SA, YouTube, and pretty much any other website where I’m allowed to have a presence.
If I comment on someone else’s art, I risk bringi

I agree with her closing points too. It’s funny how we’re perfectly willing to suspend disbelief when it comes to health regeneration, invisible walls, quest markers, super powers, crazy game mechanics etc... but when it comes to treating women as... well... women... why do we have to keep coming up with excuses to give it a pass? In all honesty.. why do so many games even NEED these depictions in them? Take them out and I guarantee you that the games would play and feel pretty much exactly the same.
And that’s my last bit of criticism too. Most of the games listed are rated M... but they’re not mature by any stretch of the imagination. Watchdogs, GTA, Red Dead Redemption, Hitman etc are immature games. But because they’re dressed up with “swearing” and
