Pandora, with her 'jar'. In the original greek version it was a jar containing all the world's evils. (The word 'box' was a medieval mistranslation or supposed improvement.)
Here the evils seep out like smoke rather than rushing out like a burst dam, and Pandora slowly begins to understand what she's done.

(Though really it was Zeus' fault. He put the evils in the jar, he made Pandora its keeper, he 'gifted' her with curiosity, and left her with it saying 'don't touch!'. Sound familiar? :hmm: )

Isis, Egyptian goddess of life and fertility who even managed to bring her husband back from the dead. In one hand she holds the ankh, in the other a lotus. Behind her head (rather than on it) is her crown in the shape of the heiroglyph for 'throne', symbolising her royalty.

Persephone, daughter of the goddess Demeter, who was abducted by Hades (here [link]) Lord of the Underworld to be his wife.
At first she refused all food that was offered her, but eventually she ate six little seeds from a pomegranate and in doing so doomed herself to spend six months of every year in Hades' domain.
