New Share Buttons: Pinterest and Google+
We've added two more share buttons to deviation pages! This was a popular request, both in comments from members here on deviantART as well as on deviantART's Google+ Page, and so we've be adding buttons that allow you to share on Google+ and Pinterest, in addition to the share tools that are already in place.

Updates for April 1stLooks like my April Fools joke went over pretty well. I was quite surprised to see the response, honestly! Was it the most original prank in the books? Absolutely not, but considering that I usually ignore April Fools Day and that people STILL believed it, I think it's alright. Sometimes the oldest jokes are the best and it's not like this was a contest trying to outdo everyone around me. Just having some fun for a change, which is something I need to do more often.Updates for April 1st3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Also, it shows how many people actually followed the link. Anyone who read the journal and followed the link to the trolololo song would've known it was a joke. But it seems a LOT of people didn't bother doing that, hehe.
Speaking of April Fools though, did you know that it was 4 years ago today that I began the Alex Ze Pirate web series? April 1st, 2008 was the day I began posting short one page gags involving my pirate characters on SheezyArt. It's kinda hard to believe it's only been 4 years as so much has happened since

Daily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.
Be careful what you wish for!
Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.
Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama.
Some people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part

Disney vs Lucas ArtsIf ever you bring up Disney in a conversation, people immediately recite tired old issues with the company that haven't been true for a long time. For example, complaining about the excess of half-assed sequels. That was part of Michael Eisner's regime. When he left the studio the quality Disney was producing suddenly skyrocketed considerably. Likewise the excessive merchandising and branding of Disney related products has also ceased to be as all-consuming now that Eisner is gone. In fact, a lot of the main issues people had with Disney during the 90's and early 2000's was a result of Eisner.Disney vs Lucas Arts2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since Eisner left, the Disney studio has done a REMARKABLE job in clearing their name of many of the atrocities they had committed during his regime. They promptly turned the animation department around and have even begun doing 2-D animated films again after Eisner said "no." Granted, at the moment 2-D is still in hiatus, but the situation isn't as dire as it use to be and there's still promise

About my TMNT rantGot a long journal head of you. I tried to break it up a bit so you can skim parts.About my TMNT rant4 months ago in Personal More Like This
It appears some people were a little less than happy with the idea that I’m not going to see the new TMNT movie, yet have already formed a negative opinion about it. Some people, who don’t understand what the word means, are calling this “hypocritical” since I often ask that people try to see both sides of an issue, so taking a definitive stance here with (what appears to be to them) incomplete data is wrongheaded of me. So now I gotta write this journal to explain my actions better. Hope you’re happy ‘bout that...
It’s just a movie! Why does it matter?
Because it’s not JUST a movie. Movies do not exist in a vacuum. How well (or bad) a movie does informs YEARS of upcoming movies and careers. Thousands of people’s jobs are dictated on the whim of what the box office rankings are for opening weekend. A now famous example is Guillermo
Photography Troubleshooting: How to work with MistGetting the camera out, and the scarf, hat and gloves, and heading into a misty morning or hazy evening can result in the best kind of photographs. Atmospheric, moody and ultimately a fine example of whatever current season you're in - these kinds of shots present themselves at awkward moments so it's vitally important to be prepared. In previous years I've got up at the crack of dawn and ventured out with all the excitement of a young child on their first day of school - only to come home with a grazed knee and broken felt tip pens. Or rather, washed out, blurred and altogether rubbish photographs.Photography Troubleshooting: How to work with Mist2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Fog is a popular mist - we often get confused and just term it all as fog or all as mist. It's not quite like that. It's all about the visibility, if we can see less than 1km through it then it's fog. If we can see between 1 - 2 km then it's mist. So when is the best time to catch these ground level clouds at their best? Fo
Bitching About April Fools on DeviantartLets get a little perspective, peopleBitching About April Fools on Deviantart3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I Know that it is common knowledge that the art-world generally regards deviantart as a beckon of professionalism and respectability. To see something like this while browsing for serious prospective employees on another busy work sunday on a serious talent search site that is totally serious business guys is totally going to get you banned from the art world and loose you all the jobz you would have gotten that day! This is an outrageous prank! This is not what DA is about!
Come on guys, perspective.
If your gallery is so important to your life and career that you can not stand to have even one of your precious thumbnails momentarily obscured lest every employer decide that cats are no longer the "in" thing this year and black list you from the industry, you probably shouldn't be on DA. Yes, some people get a lot of traffic from DA, but lets be honest, this is not an appropriate site in which to host any kind of serious portfolio. Fine,
Quiet.I'm drawing every day.Quiet.3 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
And taking photos every day.
And designing every day.
The drawing usually leads to the designing. Or vice versa.
The photos are just something I can't help. If I miss a shot, but see the photograph that could have been, I get kinda depressed about it. So I just take photos to avoid that feeling. I miss a lot of photos anyway. But I try to remind myself that those were photos just for me. And that's a nice feeling when you can see photos that someone else will never see. Really incredible things happen all around, all the time, so long as you're looking for it. Challenging yourself to see the art out there even if it hasn't been pointed out by anyone but you, for you.
The designing is all deviantART. Plus designing apartments for new friends in town, or helping friends with their apps or startups. Like http://www.trendabl.com or something. But usually it's for internal deviantART projects.
Stuff we've been working on forever that hasn't seen the light of day

In the past I’ve drawn my own artwork to explain things, but that’s always resulted in people accusing me of not knowing what I’m talking about and demanding actual sources. I don’t like the idea of using actual sources because my criticism of these techniques could easily be misinterpreted as criticism against specific artists, which is entirely the wrong idea. A lot of the time, these are pervasive techniques used throughout the mainstream (American) comic industry and are not the fault of any one particular artist. It’s more of a condemnation of perpetuating “bad habits” than anything else.
As a result, this new batch of “Things I Wish Comics Would Stop Doing” strips will feature actual artwork

over your feral human animal!
A couple weeks ago, I went to a raucous furry party.
Oh heavens, that's an odd way to start a personal story.
A good friend of mine called me up, saying that she and her friend were going to a monthly get-together in Orange County where a bunch of furries throw a party open to everyone. Furries...not really my thing. My experience within the furry community is limited to the occasional commission I get, but when it comes to conversing and interacting with furries, I'm a bit inexperienced.
"Just a party?" I ask.
"Yeah, something they do every month."
"Ah, so just a get-together," I breathe a sigh of relief. "Not like a bunch of fursuiters or crazies."
"..." She replies.
"..." I implore.
"..." She laments.
Apparently...it was a bunch of the crazies.
"Yeah, they're actually going to do a fursuit parade."

In my last journal I talked about my stance on Daily Deviations. In this occasion I'll tell you some of the reasons that make me choose some artworks, and the reasons that make me not choose others. Hopefully it will be interesting for some, useful for others or simply a good reading if you're really boring.
What makes me choose a deviation to be featured?
Such a simple question with such an indefinite answer, and I apologize in advance for giving such a vague response but I'll put it simple: Sometimes not even I know!
There's not a secret formula I have to determine if a piece is going to be featured or not, sometimes I really have a hard time making a decision and it really is a case-by-case situation. The deviation needs to STAND OUT, be different, have that "wow" factor. Unfortunately this is very difficult to explain. However ther
Photography Troubleshooting: Winter WildlifeFor many parts of the world, Winter provides a beautiful backdrop for some of the best landscape and water scape Photography out there. Snowy hills, Frosty trees and more help to convert a world of vibrant Summer or Autumn into subdued yet awe-inspiring Winter. But what about the wildlife? Extreme weather conditions can make it more challenging to get out and about with the camera, but can also give you more opportunity to capture those elusive animals.Photography Troubleshooting: Winter Wildlife2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
When I first started investigating Winter Wildlife Photography I thought that I would have to aim for things like Foxes, Deer and other wild and sometimes elusive animals. But actually, wildlife Photography and in particular in the Winter - can start right in the back garden.
Birds in particular get hungrier and needier during Winter months in England. I'm sure this is true for many parts of the world too. Depending on the kinds that frequent your garden, you could encourage them to linger pretty quickly or it might

Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing SnowThe best of the Wintery weather conditions often come later on in the season, especially here in the UK. The next week or so will hopefully provide many photographers with the chance to capture those snowy scenes. So what’s the best way to achieve them?Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing Snow2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I’m sure many will agree that snowy landscapes are amongst the trickiest things to photograph. Exposure is the common problem; temperature is usually a close second! If your camera has a snow or winter setting then this will help override the auto white balance and lower the exposure, so you are already set to go. But if your camera doesn’t have these functions, then you might find these tips handy:
1.Before you head out, check your equipment. The white skies that often accompany a snowy scene are the most likely out of any shot you’ll take, to show up the dirt on your lens. Give it a good clean beforehand or you’ll be spending a long time with th
