We're sponsoring Artists' Alley 2012!

We're headed to Comic-Con International:
San Diego to sponsor Artists' Alley!

We Love Artists' Alley

We're back at Comic-Con!

Last year, our sponsorship of Artists' Alley was a huge success. We were able to provide a more comfortable environment for the artists, display their art on huge screens over the Alley, and let people attending the convention draw with deviantART muro on fantastic digital screens. We plan to do this and more in 2012 as we take on the great pleasure of sponsoring Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic-Con again.

Six deviant scholarships

We increased our number of scholarships from two to six this year, and have chosen our talented recipients. These six amazing deviants submitted their Portfolios to the Comic-Con group and have been chosen by DeevElliott to showcase their work in Artists' Alley. Each scholarship recipient will be able to display their work in the Alley and receive critique from top industry professionals.

okay so here is a tip

i have seen  in my life many artists who proclaimed they want to develop their skills, and kept bashing on everyone and everything on the way....and for some reason those guys never got anywhere...

here is why..

there is a value to different approaches, different styles. realism, manga , cartooney disney, my little pony, furries....don't waste your time tryint to bash any of the stuff you don't personally like

you are missing out, bigtime!

see there is a reason why that stuff is popular. and by that i mean on the visual side. so instead of flaming , trolling and bashing, try understanding the inner workings of it.

here are some specific examples

realism- it is a wonderfully complex base , reflects one's skill  in capturing reality, but in it there are differences between photo referenced, real life work and no reference. ALL HAVE THEIR VALUE AND IMPORTANCE! from photos you can learn alot,  gain analytic skills, develop an attention to details, so dont bash those who work from photos, ask yourself can you do it as good!

from real life you include the speed aspect to it. nature is fleeting, changing, and you are trying to capture the moment, so when  looking at a piocture you know was drawn from real life,  look at it as such, understand it's challenges

from mind-no reference. learn to recognize the skills behind this approack and be aware the people who are capable of this are actually well versed in both from photo and from real life artwork

manga- a very popular style that is unfairly summarized. there are different approaches. to some manga summarizes gestures and expressions to  facial emoticons but let's take a very popular naruto as an example. artist of it is a master of facial expressions and gesture. same can be said for genshiken. on a different side there are people like ken akamatsu who use a more polished stylized approach and uses facial emoticons to a greater extent.   you can learn from all of these approaches
look for what is useful, not for what you can hate

disney influenced general style is perhaps the best aid to learning gesticulation and facial expressions, as it generally translates well into drawing and makes expressiveness pop by making every motion just a little bit overly done

my little pony... oh yea im goiing there! never saw the series, but i appreciate the expressive nature or what i like to call gesture mapping. it presents creativity on a different level where you are taking and partially anthropomorphizing  horses in this case. the masterfullness there is the disneylike approach to  selling the character's quality through emotiveness  in animation

furries in any shape or form  they also are a creative approach. you will see people mixing different styles and influences , from disney to manga to cinematic to realism. you may dislike the fetishization of the genre. but have no  illusions they are the basis of many of the movie and videogame and comic monsters.

I'm sure many of you already know this but for those who don't, late August 23, Jerry Nelson [Floyd Pepper, Count Von Count, Gobo Fraggle and so on] passed away. Jerry was one of the greats, in my [and I'm sure many] opinion, he was the voice of the Muppets, whenever someone talks of a beautiful song, it's normally sung by him. Makes sense since he said once if it wasn't for Jim giving him a job, he would of become a Folk singer [by the way, his CD is really nice, a mix of silly and beauty.]

At first when I found out I was stunned, but after a little time, it's ok, Jerry has raised many of us to love music, to count, to adventure, and to laugh. Now, he has gone to the Rainbow Connection, he will be preforming once more with Richard Hunt. He will see old friends, and lost loved ones. Jerry lived a long life, leaving us plenty to remember, so this is why I feel, while tears are inevitable, that we should celebrate, as we did with Jim, and as we did with Richard, we should grab our instruments and sing, grab our capes and dance, or just run around yipping, however we remember the man who has been such a big part of all of us should be done.

R.I.P. Jerry, it's your turn in the Eye of the Storm, we will hold your memory close with a thankful heart.

And now, I leave you with song:

While my guitar Gently Weeps:…
Halfway Down the Stairs:…
The Batty Bat:…
Your Hands can Do:…
Hey Mr. Bass-man:…
Saying Goodbye:…

Ok, just one more, though its my favourite Muppet episode, if you want skip to the end to see the jousting scene, but this stars Pearl Bailey. The sub story is Kermit trying to get Floyd to joust with the black knight. Part two has my favourite song though:………

I’ve been skimming through previews of Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.
I am so bored with the standard aesthetic of RPGs.
Swords, sorcery, European environments.
I’m sure that my weariness of these visuals stems from the fact I live in England, and that I grew up playing amid the ruins that scatter the borderlands of the North East. Ancient mounds, the remnants of Hadrian’s wall, fallen abbeys and frontier fortifications; because I see all that in REAL LIFE, I have no desire to wander digital versions.
Fable 2 and 3 are exceptions. Those are clearly fantasy versions of England, but they nod to different periods in history. 16th and 17th century rather than 11th and 12th. Flintlocks over chainmail. It adds something new.
I never bothered to finish Skyrim, but I’ve played Fallout 3 and New Vegas a dozen times, because the latter games are, to British eyes, a more exotic world. They are just as strange and foreign to me as a land littered with ancient towers and castles is to a person from a younger nation.

I’ve asked the question before: with all of world history to plunder for inspiration, why do game makers keep returning to medieval Europe?

(From the top: Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne Island and Hadrian's Wall. All 30 minutes from where I lived as a kid)

How to create a successful Group

Mon Jul 30, 2012, 5:57 AM

My beautiful friends :blowkiss:

I hope everybody is doing fine and enjoying  their summer :dalove:

Today, I want to talk about Groups. I’m a member  of so many groups and I always encourage my friends to join as many groups as they can, a group is always a great place to meet new artists and let everybody know what you do.

But, I’m sure that you guys notice every now and then that there is a group that is not active or it has been around for a long time and it has so few members, or a group that doesn’t respond to their members and so many other problems.  There are so many groups people create them just for the sake of creating a group and they leave them just like that, with no activity at all.

How to create a successful group

:iconflowerhdplz: Commitment: Before you start thinking about creating a group, you should ask yourself, are you ready for it, do you have the time for it, are you ready to commit to it and put some effort into it.

:iconflowerhdplz: How to choose your staff:  You should choose your co-founder and your contributors carefully, they  better be your friends, people with whom  you share the same interests and the same art form, lets say you want to create a group for Literature, your staff should be writers, people who know something about Literature. Also you should be clear with them, ask them if they are willing to put some time and effort into the group.

:iconflowerhdplz: Coordination:  You and your staff should have a very good coordination and a stable contact point.  Emails or notes or even a chat-room just for you guys so you can discuss all matters of your group. The staff of a group should be on the same page, always updated. If you are not able to reach your staff, you will have problems. In so many groups, the co-founder tells you something and the founder tells you another thing, this makes your memebrs question the group.

:iconflowerhdplz: Presentation:  Before you start inviting members to your group, work first on the presentation of the group. That is; the right icon, try to get your group a very nice icon, and an intersting tag line, that speaks to everybody who would want to join.

:iconflowerhdplz: The group’s Gallery:  You know what is your group about and what kind of art people should submit, so now you need to create the right folders, lets say your group is about Literature in general( This example is easier to explain :paranoid:) You need to creat folders for all genres of poetry and all genres of prose, or if your Group is about photgraphy, create forlder for all kind of photography, so everybody can submit their art.

:iconflowerhdplz: Rules:  Every group should have rules, honestly, a group with no rules is just a big mess. Feature your rules in the front page of the group, don’t post links to your rules on some other page, most of people don’t bother to go check them. Your rules should always be in the front for every new member to see, also write them in bold please.

:iconflowerhdplz: Invitations: Now that your group is looking nice, start inviting members:la: You need to start with your watchers first, they are the ones that would love to support your project and you may even ask them to promote your group and that will help you get more members.  Who do you invite next and how I  will tell you how.

Again, lets say your group is for photography, what I will do is, I will brows photography, you better browse the newest deviations. Then I start  looking at photos, visiting the artist’s page, well he does good photos, invite him.  If you just invite 20 people every day  that would be amazing. After all a group is awesome with more members.

The invitation itself:   Some people come and ask you to join their groups in a very straight forward way as if they order you. Be polite, ınvite people in a very polite way “  Hey there  I have checked your gallery, you are doing really good work and I would love if you join my group. Have a nice day :dalove: “ Who wouldn’t join you if you talk like this.

:iconflowerhdplz: Affiliations:  Try to affiliate with as many other groups as you can, groups that have the same stream as you, whne you affliate with groups you give your group more exposure and more people will know about it. Also, whne you send an affiliation reauest, be polite and insert a small note that says” we would love to affiliate with you guys” or anything else like that.

:iconflowerhdplz: Activity:  Now you have members and they are submiting their work and everything looks good. This should never let you relax and let the group be, you need to be active, try to interact with your members, through journals and posts, ask them if they need something, if they have suggestions. Take their sugestion into consideration.  Answer their notes and comments.

:iconflowerhdplz: Group Contest:  This is always an event that makes members love their group more and get them to know eachother, a group contest always creates a very beautiful atmosphere in the group.  Even if you don’t have much prizes, just every now and then announce a contest, everybody will be willing to donate prizes and help you. There are groups that do contests that only have features as prizes and everybody is happy about it.

:iconflowerhdplz: Always ask for help:  A group is not easy to manage especially at the start don’t be shy and ask for help, either from your friends and watchers, from other groups.

I hope this will be helpful for your guys, for evertyone who is thinking about starting a group. Please :+fav: This journal so more people can read .

And as so many of you know I can’t do a journal without featuring poems :O_o:This is this week’s feature. Beautiful poems. Please suppoort the poet :+fav::+devwatch:

Love you all :dalove:

Perfect PointsSlipping your shoes from
those rainbow-striped socks, you have
entered a cold place
within me, warming it with
the glide of your soft-sheathed feet.
MusingI'm too young to spend my life
running from the thunder,
staring at the kitchen walls wondering
how life would be different
if they weren't the same color.

Red DressEmotions bubble
and then deplete
yet still I struggle
to feel complete.
Should not death
be more complex
than the fading of one's breath
as still we feel its last effect?
Who could think
it'd be so easy
that all you'd have to do is blink
before these thoughts would make you queasy?
Simple as the twitching
of a madman's finger
no amount of stitching
will heal the feelings that like to linger.
Regret, remorse, and anger
events like this are horrid
destroying every anchor
in a world so very morbid.
Who could guess
and who could say
the beauty of their red dress
in a world compiled of simple shades of gray.
Muse and the MoonCrescent, eerie eyrie,
Fly as you might, and
I will linger in myself.
You and I are both shepherds,
But I of thoughts,
Dark as the womb.
My muse and the moon abides.
Now flows the most beautiful lies;
Shadow actresses, unfettered,
Make imagination their home,
Strike awe and more, to sway
Me and my restless mind.
Listen closely, they are whispering
Secrets to bring us peace.
And above, such beating
Of wings, begging me to join them.
This freedom is malign,
Pecking on the bars for seed
When the cage is unlocked.

cracking and crumblingOne hit
One crack
One hundred hits
One hundred cracks
They all start to add up
Then there will be that one hit
That one hit that will just cause everything to crumble
Your walls collapse
You break down
Start to cry
Start begging for it to stop
All the voices in your head
Let out from the collapse
Start screaming
Drowning out reality
Breaking you down mentally even more
You see the gun
You pick it up
Load the magazine
Put it in your mouth
And pull the trigger
Everything stops
The screaming voices
The Crying
Everything Dark
Everything Silent
100 hits
Turn into one hundred cracks
Then more and more
Remember this
And be careful what you say to people
Hope is DeadHere where it rains,
When days pass inbetween
The woven shadows,
Hope is never in abundance...
It's like that everyday...
If you carry ghosts
Everywhere you go,
Life is a dark tunnel
The only difference is...
You don't see the light at the end...

Shelter in Shadows
I hide in these shadows
The sun burns and blinds
Set this disfigurement in flames
till only ashes remain
The earth reclaims itself from me
A dance with deathThe nothingness washes over you
And the brilliance of The Light fades away.
Her hand, so perfect and delicate,
Smoother and more flawless than a china doll,
Extends to you, inviting you.
The music starts and lost souls hush
As she twirls you across the paranormal plane.
The woes from your past life melt
And the afterlife envelopes you.
She leans in close to you,
Her chin upon your shoulder
Her lips brushing against your ear
And she coos a melodic warning to you.
"Remember, never forget."
The music stops, the world turns dark.
Millions of hands drag you away
Back to your body, back to a true hell.
Gasping in air until your lungs might burst,
Darting awake after such peaceful rest.
Her face blurs from your memory
And you plea for someone to find her.
Someone seems to recall her, but you know better.
"You've never danced with her.
Or you have, and you don't remember.
She's lovely, you'd remember her."
Rest at ease, child.
One day you'll relive the dance.

:thumb317863166: If I CouldIf I could I would climb into the night sky,
I'd take the glimmering stars and bring them to you.
I'd put them under your skin so you'd feel it within,
And you'd slowly start loving yourself too.
If I could I would fly far towards the sunset,
I'd take the bright sun and bring it to you.
I'd put it into your heart so the dark would fall apart,
And you'd feel the warmth breaking through.
If I could I would travel all the way into the sky,
I'd take the pure air and bring it to you.
I'd put it in your mind so you'd be unconfined,
And you'd be completely free and true.
If I could I would journey straight into space,
I'd take the shining moon and bring it to you.
I'd put it in your soul so you could feel whole,
And you'd see your beauty like I always do.

She foundshe found the deepest reaches of my bones
and sucked the marrow out
with words and
leaving me defenseless
A Silent Warrior... Under the moon,
Lighting up the skies,
Weapon drawn,
She moves quickly.
No time for fear,
As enemies come near,
Feed the fire,
Heart raging for more,
They snarl,
With sharp deadly claws,
Almost invisible from the human eye,
From the blackness of night,
Thirsting for blood.
Quick reaction,
Her navy blue eyes glimmer,
Slicing through skin,
Cleanly through,
As she craves to fight on,
Smiling at their fatal demise.
Death filling the air,
She pulls back her weapon,
A few steps back,
Eyes turned back,
A silent call,
As she jumps backward,
A unsettling feeling,
In her mind,
She silently ligures back,
Waiting for the next attack.

Seems not...Seems like the smile of yesterday...
Is now a million miles away...
Seems like the warmth has turned to ice...
And seems like winter's here to stay...
Seems like the time like grains of sand...
Is slipping through our weary hand...
Seems like we're doomed to pay the price...
And seems like we're too poor to pay...
Seems like the game of you and I...
Is clearly ending in a tie...
Seems like the gods have rolled the dice...
And seems like we're not meant to play...
shiverstrains run across her wrist most of the time
they run up her arms
and slip down her spine
they claim finely draw lines,
those tracks on her thighs
and stop
to drop
where the sun shines
planes sore through her stomach,
scrape the frame of her hips
melt her joints and cast whimpers behind her lips
they glide through the shudders in her knee caps
then dip
around her shoulders,
and escape
through her finger tips

The Day We DieWe murder and desecrate our former selves
We adapt to be accepted
Tossing who we were upon the shelves
Refusing to be rejected
We confine ourselves to conformity
Seeking approval of those around
For those different we find pity
And to ourselves we are bound
Never reaching our own standard
Of excellency and success
We wont leave ourselves untampered
We view ourselves as less
Completely losing who we were
In the midst of it all
To others we become a blur
with identities so small
Soon we will be gone
Becoming clones of our fellow man
Our fictitiousness carries on
Forgetting all we can
We are warped and distorted
Our faces washed away
With a mental state so morbid
Believing it's okay
Losing what's unique
Our world no longer beautiful
With desolation so bleak
And emptiness so powerful
A path too many follow
Humanity never strays
In our sameness we wallow
Setting our differences ablaze
Now who are we
But people so broken
Fake is what we see
But these words are never spoken
This is the end to
I broke a mirror to multiplyI broke a mirror to multiply
my smile several times;
To twirl and watch my tiny selves
dance in their confines.
My minions and my audience;
My crowd in Crystalline.
The lines that broke were smooth and clean
like their reflective grins.
For seven years I'll only face
the tiny shards of me.
No broken luck or broken soul;
Just attentive company.

Standing at the Edge of InfinityGazing through the looking glass,
Your perceptions made askew;
Stare off into the abyss,
An enigma awaits you.
Discovering your true self,
Your eyes stare back from below;
Careful, lest you lose yourself
Going down the rabbit hole.
Reality is fickle,
Distorting all that we see;
Expect the unexpected;
Everything will cease to be.
Nature's blind to wealth and class;
Unto dust, thou shalt return;
Sell your soul for mounds of gold,
Watch your sordid empire burn.
Cemetery StrollThe chilly October air sears my skin
As I wander through the winding lane;
Stone, serpentine trails lay on top of coffins,
Dark headstones and obelisks mark the slain;
Whether it be by sickness or untimely murder
All ill-fated bodies rest peacefully.
I continue to amble through death's corridor,
Through the sky, the stars dance so gracefully;
A glint of cold granite stands alone,
There, bathed in a pool of moonlight,
Lies an elegantly decorated headstone
With my name carved in letters bright!
I stood still as a statue, trusting not my eyes,
This dream was predicting my eerie demise.

:thumb316996485: Addicting DarkAn addicting dark
a rolling scream
a light on some
great Tragedy
that makes me want
to feel it all
Bemused with wicked pain
entranced by a spell
not my own
a failing of my kind
a romance of blood and flesh
come alive
In heady wasted breath

Can't really understand the mentality of people that set out to cause digital vandalism.
Angsty, pathetic little minds, so stunted on the creativity front that the only way they can feel any sense of accomplishment is by undoing someone else’s efforts?
I just can't think that....small.

You can do any number of things with your time, any number of wonderful things to make your mark on the world. If all you can come up with is doing something to make another person’s life more difficult: you’re a bit of a prick.

You remember when mobile phones used to just do one thing: be a phone? Then they could text. Then they could take photos. Then they could connect to the internet.
People pay hundreds for the latest iPhone, which does a ton of things on top of being a phone, and which is why I DON'T OWN ONE!
I carry a phone because I might need to make a call.
Don't think that I'm some sort of Luddite that takes offence at all the bells and whistles they bolt onto the little boxes. I'm not. I just have no use for them, and so, I don't want to pay for them.
I can go into my local phone emporium and pick up a device that is a phone and only a phone for £19.99 (or even less!). No camera, no internet access, just a crappy little green screen that displays a number.
It's a phone, nothing more.

Which brings me to the next generation of consoles.
As far back as I have desired them, they have cost around the £100 – £200 mark at launch, even when they started doing things they didn't need to, like play DVDs/Blue Ray.
I bought them to play games. That's it. It doesn't need access to social networks. It doesn't need a camera. It doesn't need to play movies or TV series. The only reason I ever hooked my 360 up to Xbox Live was so I could play Team Fortress 2 (Halo fans: this is what a real multiplayer shooter looks like).
Next gen consoles will do all of that, whether we like it or not. And you'll be paying for it.

Xbox One: £429
PS4: £349

F**k. That.

I want to play games on my games console. That's all. I'll obviously need to get on-line with the thing to patch all the shoddy, incomplete software that'll be released onto it, but beyond that, I just want to play games. I do not want bells and whistles on my hardware, so I'm sure as sh*t not going to pay for them.

In my eyes, the PS4 appears the more desirable unit. It's cheaper, you can play second-hand games on it without issue and all my favourite game franchises are released on all platforms, but there's still no way I'm buying one at launch. They rush these things, now. In the past, they used to take their time and iron out the kinks. Now they're caught up in the panic that they might not hit the shelves before or at the same time as their rivals. With such insanely complex tech and supporting systems, that makes devastating flaws more likely to surface.

The console on my "to buy" list for 2013 is probably….the SNES.
Never owned one. I was a SEGA fanboy in the 90s, back when every console had its own unique roster of games, so there's a swathe of titles I've never played.
Yeah. I think I'll get a SNES, because retro-gaming has never looked more appealing.

No. Just... NO!

Look... It’s incredibly commendable that Blue Sky (A studio who’s talent is sadly grossly ignored by the general public) is able to re-create almost perfectly the art style of Charles Schulz with computer graphics. My main problem is... WHY? Why does it have to be 3-D? Why does it have to be CGI? Ever heard of Occam’s Razor: “The simplest solution is often the best?” Why work so hard emulating a hand drawn art style in 3-D instead of just doing it HAND DRAWN? For all their hard work, this looks like a 2-D Peanuts cartoon minus the outlines so... why not just animated in 2-D and don’t use outlines??? You can even apply a post faux 3-D effect over it to achieve basically the exact same results you get here so... Why?

To be fair, the movie looks like it’s going to be very faithful to the original series and probably will be very cute. I just don’t understand why it needs to be 3-D.
