While my Guitar Gently WeepsI'm sure many of you already know this but for those who don't, late August 23, Jerry Nelson [Floyd Pepper, Count Von Count, Gobo Fraggle and so on] passed away. Jerry was one of the greats, in my [and I'm sure many] opinion, he was the voice of the Muppets, whenever someone talks of a beautiful song, it's normally sung by him. Makes sense since he said once if it wasn't for Jim giving him a job, he would of become a Folk singer [by the way, his CD is really nice, a mix of silly and beauty.]While my Guitar Gently Weeps2 years ago in Personal More Like This
At first when I found out I was stunned, but after a little time, it's ok, Jerry has raised many of us to love music, to count, to adventure, and to laugh. Now, he has gone to the Rainbow Connection, he will be preforming once more with Richard Hunt. He will see old friends, and lost loved ones. Jerry lived a long life, leaving us plenty to remember, so this is why I feel, while tears are inevitable, that we should celebrate, as we did with Jim, and as we did with Richard, we should grab our instru

San Diego to sponsor Artists' Alley!
We Love Artists' Alley
We're back at Comic-Con!
Last year, our sponsorship of Artists' Alley was a huge success. We were able to provide a more comfortable environment for the artists, display their art on huge screens over the Alley, and let people attending the convention draw with deviantART muro on fantastic digital screens. We plan to do this and more in 2012 as we take on the great pleasure of sponsoring Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic-C

i have seen in my life many artists who proclaimed they want to develop their skills, and kept bashing on everyone and everything on the way....and for some reason those guys never got anywhere...
here is why..
there is a value to different approaches, different styles. realism, manga , cartooney disney, my little pony, furries....don't waste your time tryint to bash any of the stuff you don't personally like
you are missing out, bigtime!
see there is a reason why that stuff is popular. and by that i mean on the visual side. so instead of flaming , trolling and bashing, try understanding the inner workings of it.
here are some specific examples
realism- it is a wonderfully complex base , reflects one's skill in capturing reality, but in it there are differences between photo referenced, real life work and no reference. ALL HAVE THEIR VALUE AND IMPORTANCE! from photos you can learn alot, gain analytic skills, develop an attention to

Thanks so much to all who entered! I am really excited to start voting!
~ Voting ~
The group will be putting up polls for each category, so our members can vote for the winners! Each poll will last a week, so that members have plenty of time to vote. Some of our categories have too many entries for polls. In this case, we will put up a journal and ask members to post their choices in the comments. The journals will contain more specific instructions.
I have taken the liberty of moving some of the entries into different categories to give the entrants better chances of winning. I apologize if this offends anyone, but I felt it was best for all involved.
Each participant was allowed 2 entries. I will be looking through each and every entry, so if I find more than 2 by any me
How to create a successful GroupMy beautiful friendsHow to create a successful Group2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I hope everybody is doing fine and enjoying their summer
Today, I want to talk about Groups. I’m a member of so many groups and I always encourage my friends to join as many groups as they can, a group is always a great place to meet new artists and let everybody know what you do.
But, I’m sure that you guys notice every now and then that there is a group that is not active or it has been around for a long time and it has so few members, or a group that doesn’t respond to their members and so many other problems. There are so many groups people create them just for the sake of creating a group and they leave them just like that, with no activity at all.

Getting Noticed in dAEveryday, millions of users from all over the world use deviantART, and it is really hard for new users to get themselves noticed. Oh yes, it is HARD. It can actually be a really disappointing experience for some of us. But, if you show some patience and work for it, you may just be able to crack through that wall standing between you and exposure to the community. Remember, all it take is patience. Lots and lots of patience. Oh, and you also need to trust yourself. Just because you couldn't get a huge fan base in several weeks or months doesn't mean that you will never get them. But, there are some really important stuff you need to follow first before getting there.Getting Noticed in dA1 year ago in Personal More Like This
dA is also a community, just like any other community in the world. The only difference is dA is and online community and the others, well they are totally offline . So, this means there will be some standards to be held in there, or else it won't function properly. You are going to have to stick to
Might No 9 Female Robot DebacleNot sure how I missed this but a couple days ago one of the kickstarter people attached to Keiji Inafune’s “Mighty No. 9” project has caused a bit of controversy. It seems she tweeted that she would have liked for Mighty No. 9’s designs to be female. And then the internet exploded on her for trying to further her “feminist agenda.”Might No 9 Female Robot Debacle3 months ago in Personal More Like This
You know... I keep harping on these issues because of idiotic shit like this. I mean, seriously? It’s not even a THING. She said she would have LIKED it if the character designs were female, not that she was trying to FORCE her agenda on anything. Clearly from the design art the character is already male to begin with, so what are people worried about? There’s literally no need to get angry over this. It was someone’s OPINION about something they were working on.
Granted, from what I understand of the debacle, she didn’t handle herself well with the uproar, but frankly I’m more forgiving about

Can't really understand the mentality of people that set out to cause digital vandalism.
Angsty, pathetic little minds, so stunted on the creativity front that the only way they can feel any sense of accomplishment is by undoing someone else’s efforts?
I just can't think that....small.
You can do any number of things with your time, any number of wonderful things to make your mark on the world. If all you can come up with is doing something to make another person’s life more difficult: you’re a bit of a prick.

The Day of The Doctor is at hand.....As a long-time Doctor Who fan, I'm kind of excited over this. The Day of The Doctor is at hand.....5 months ago in Personal More Like This
****theories that may turn out to be spoilers****
"The name I chose was the Doctor. It's like a promise you make.", that's what the 11th Doctor said, shortly before a hitherto unseen Doctor appears.
My theory is that this was Doctor 8.5.
"He's the one who broke the promise."
We know that, as of the 9th incarnation, the Doctor is the last Time Lord standing after the final Time War against the Daleks. This conflict ended with the Doctor using some device/mechanism known as "The Moment", which saw about the destruction of both his own race and the enemy.
If "Doctor" is a promise, then I think genocide does a fairly good job of breaking it.
John Hurt's "Doctor" is the Doctor..... but not.

Thor: The Dark WorldA quick, spoiler-free review: it's goooooood.Thor: The Dark World4 months ago in Personal More Like This
I'd actually say that it's the best paced super-hero flick since the first Iron Man film.
Incredible Hulk fizzled in the third act.
Iron Man 2 saw every character turn either really wet or go full retard.
Thor felt a bit like a plodding, 80s, movie-with-a-message.
Captain America just felt like an extended prologue for The Avengers.
The Avengers didn't really get going until the finale.
And Iron Man 3 occupies a middle ground between Iron Man and Iron Man 2.
I'm certainly not saying any of those films were bad, it's just they felt saggy in areas.
Thor: The Dark World has a perfect pace. It's engaging right from the get-go and doesn't trip up once (that I noticed).
It is part of the Marvel cinematic series, though, so there are many, many nods and references to previous films (one of Loki's disguises is brilliant), which may leave newcomers lost.
And, of course, if
5 LevelsI've spoken as guest speaker a number of times over the years (come visit me at SCAD Atlanta in January). While I'm not the best or most patient teacher, I think my strength is my pragmatic and blunt approach to the business side of comics. In order to help the students think of a "5 YEAR PLAN" (more on that in an upcoming post), I'll often break down the different page rate levels of comic book artists as a way to help analyze the playing field of our industry. If there's a ladder to success, what's wrong with defining each rung? I imagine such a breakdown helpful for moving up in most any industry, not just comics.5 Levels2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here are the 5 LEVELS of comic artists as I see them--NOT based on talent but on page rates, popularity, and the prestige of the titles the artist works on. You might define them differently or have more than just 5, but I find that less-is-more when it comes to people being able to retain information.
artbook questions - again!hey wonderful followers. thanks again for all the help regarding the art theft from last week. i'll keep you posted on what happens!artbook questions - again!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
i'm thinking about that artbook i mentioned a few journal entries back. i have some ideas of how i want to handle the content, which includes a few exclusive pieces, tutorials/walkthroughs and probably a dvd showing my painting process. i want to make it happen! but one thing i've decided is to look for a publisher in the U.S. it would be great since that would make the book altogether more affordable for many of you - it's so expensive to ship from europe! so i wanted to ask if any of you guys could suggest any american publishers or knew any companies that make interesting artbooks that aren't too expensive/gigantic? any tips would be great. thank youuuuuu for reading!
Sketchbook Pro 6So most of you know that I'm a Sketchbook Pro user.Sketchbook Pro 62 years ago in Personal More Like This
A few days back, Autodesk released Sketchbook Pro 6, and I think this is the version that's going to make a lot of people who have YET to experience Sketchbook Pro in full, or haven't really given the past versions a chance, switch over to making it their digital drawing software of choice; heck, even their PAINTING software of choice.
We still have the cleverly-designed user interface, that makes it easy on the eyes and mind when we're brainstorming and sketching. With the handful of new tools introduced, we still have a clutter-free drawing environment, and man, there's some awesome tools this time around. I'll go down the list:
The Brush Library
The main brush toolbar itself has a click-and-drag function, allowing you to store all your often-used brushes in each of the "lanes". You then can click the button on the upper-right and then a fu
Grow some balls.I don't mind people voicing that they don't like my work or the content of my silly little cartoons. Most of the time I find it funny! They set up a new one. One which they use to rattle off whatever flatulance they believe passes as worthwhile commentary in the real world, most likely in the wake of mummy and daddy slapping them on the wrist over something - angsty, juvenile pricks that they are.
And juvenile they must be, as anyone with a mite more experience would realise that any weight you hope your words might have is completely lost when someone visits your "slander" profile and reads the numbers "0 Deviations", "0 Favourites", "0 Watchers", "No Journal entries", etc.
It renders your words as vacuous as your gallery.
So if you're going to type stuff like "I feel like some of the smut you draw takes away from the credibility of your art as a whole." or
Yeah, this'll end well.....Let me try to wrap my head around this: certain parties in the U.S government don't like the idea of assisting the poor, of the county they serve, with health care expense, because of the cost.Yeah, this'll end well.....5 months ago in Personal More Like This
Their "solution" to this is to shut down the government (something which isn't possible in any other nation on the planet), which will cost more, decrease public spending, lower the demand for imports, damage global economy and generally tarnish the U.S's international reputation even further?
The rich making others suffer in an effort to get their own way.
I believe that's called "tyranny".
