Balance of Power 5Slowly the darkness stopped being as suffocating and I started clawing my way through the cotton haze towards consciousness. I could feel a weight beside me, hear a steady beeping noise, smell the sweet scent of my mate even if it was mixed with worry. As I got closer to consciousness, I got my arm to move and wrapped it around the body beside me. I had little doubts that it was Nova lying there, I just hoped that it was because he was worried and not because he was hurt.
"Tell me you're alright..." I rasped out, opening my eyes slowly.
"I'm fine," Nova said, instantly moving up to give me a kiss. He didn't linger long, but it was definitely nice to feel his soft lips. "How do you feel, love?" he asked, brushing my hair back some.
"Like I was hit by a truck," I murmured. "What time is it?" I asked softly, rubbing his back with the arm I had around him since there was still an IV needle in the other one.
"Late," I answered. "Your fathers should be back around in about ten minutes or so.
At High Tide"Momma... I have to go now..." I murmured, kneeling in front of the gravestone. "Why... did you have to name him my guardian? He's never met me... Never called... Not even a birthday card... So why him? Why do I have to move so far away from you and all of my friends to live with him?" I fell forward a little, tears starting to stream down my cheeks. I watched as my tears fell to the earth beneath my hands, soaking into the recently turned, rich soil.At High Tide4 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Braden! It's time to go!" my aunt called from beside the taxi. I rubbed the tears off my face before slowly getting to my feet.
"Goodbye, Momma..." I murmured, slowly turning to head back to the car. It had been a selfish side trip of mine to have a chance to say goodbye before I boarded the plane that would take me all the way to what felt like the other side of the world. I slipped into the backseat with my aunt, letting her pull me to her side. She'd taken care of me for the last year while my mother had only grown sicker and more wea
The Broken Toy 2I fought not to return to consciousness, still feeling far too tired to be waking up. Still, I couldn't stop it and slowly let my eyes open. It was easier to move some of the most basic muscles now and I could blink more normally. I tried to raise a hand to rub the sleep out of my eyes, but the best I could do was make my fingers twitch. There was still the evil thing in my neck and the plastic tube running up my nose, but it seemed as if someone had been kind enough to cover my lower body with more than just a blanket. The Broken Toy 24 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
I heard a sigh and tried to turn my head to see the source. So much had changed since the last time my eyes were open. The room was different and I wasn't lying on a couch anymore. I finally got my head to turn and as soon as I did, I felt a small tug at my neck. The sound of something crashing to the floor reached my ears and I winced at the loudness of it. The young dark haired man looked up from his book instantly at the sound of the crash. He put the book to the sid
Monster 97It'd been days since Jinx left and he'd not returned to the house at all. The scent of his cologne was beginning to fade even from the room where he put it on every morning. I hadn't wanted to wash the sheets, fearing losing his natural chamomile to the cleansers, but I couldn't sleep in our bed with the smell of the mistake I'd made lingering there. I'd been so stupid and impatient, fearing that my lover wouldn't settle down and stop taking such dangerous risks with his life. When my sister went into heat, I just jumped at the opportunity to create a child with his blood.Monster 975 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
It didn't seem like anyone other than my siblings and I knew of what happened. Violet and Hides knew only because they could smell Jinx's scent on Rose, but Violet was being silent and Hides was too busy making sure Paisley and Nattashia didn't over exert themselves and taking care of the red haired doctor he'd made to sore to move. Paisley kept giving me odd looks whenever I'd come downstairs to eat, but she didn't
Heavenly LoverI stared out the window at the buildings as they passed. I had no idea why my father had suddenly decided that he wanted to spend time with me, but the moment he mentioned my spending the summer with him my mother had jumped all over it. I blamed the fact that she had a new boyfriend and me being a teenager who would be in the way for why she was so quick on the draw. Whatever their reasons were, I didn't care. I doubted my father would actually pull himself away from his work long enough to even notice I was there and I'd rather not be around to listen to my mother having sex with her new man.Heavenly Lover4 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
"Lani, stop scowling," my mother scolded. I rolled my eyes, ignoring her. I heard her sigh and rolled my eyes again. "Lani, baby, I know you don't want to be here. But he is your father and he has the right to see you." I scoffed, sinking lower in my seat.
"Some father," I muttered. "When was the last time I saw him? Seven? Eight years ago? More like sperm donor if you ask me." Another heavy sig

"Why would you think I couldn't walk five or six blocks?" I asked as I started down the stairs. He shrugged.
"I saw you limping earlier is all." I nodded a bit, pushing my glasses back up my nose a little.
"Last night was a little rough," I said with a sad smile. "But I'm used to this. So walking's not a problem."
"Alright," he said before jumping over the railing to land on the next lowest platform. "If you insist." I rolled my eyes a bit and picked up my pace.
"I do. Today is not what tomorrow would have been," I said. "And I've never been one to back away from a physical challenge." He grinned.
"Is that so? Well then, I'm sure we'll get along just great," he said before jumping down to the next platform. With the increased pace, it only took us about five minutes to get down the stairs and
Rainbow Italian Ice 6Finally the phone store and cafe came into view. "There, finally. Which do you want to do first? Phone or food?"Rainbow Italian Ice 65 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Phone..." I replied absently, my mind still swirling around what he'd said. "I can play with it while we wait for lunch that way."
"Alrighty then," he said, leading the way into the shop. I looked around briefly before picking up a new, relatively cheap phone and having them change the number on my contract. It seemed that changing numbers was a fairly common occurance so it wasn't too much hassle. I caught Valerio getting a couple of questioning looks so I kept my distance from him at a friendly one, instead of being too close. I didn't like the idea of anyone thinking that he might've left the bruises on my face.
"All set," I said, walking back up to him and holding up the bag with my new phone in it. "I am now officially starved though."
"Me too, let's go," he said, holding the door open for me. With the cafe being right next to the store, we had our orders placed within
Rainbow Italian Ice 5It was a little difficult keeping up with him as I couldn't jump the benches and trashcans like he could. At least not with a backpack filled with books. I used to be able to do it on a skateboard, but I was out of practice and laden with research books. Still, I could run as well as he could. My legs still worked pretty damn well. It didn't take long for us to get to the library and when we did, he stopped at the entrance to let me catch my breath.Rainbow Italian Ice 55 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Enough of a work out for you?" he asked with a chuckle. I rolled my eyes a bit and shrugged off the backpack.
"Mmm, definitely with the added weight," I muttered. "And don't laugh. These fuckers aren't that light!"
"Well, that's only making it an even better work out," he replied.
"I can think of much more fun work outs," I muttered as I twisted and stretched my muscles.
"And more thorough, but come on, let's get inside. I have work to do unfortunately," he said, holding the door open for me. I bit back the sigh as the innuendo was lost an
To Unlock His Heart 12I had gone to bed Monday night having forgotten all the rotten things that had happened that day. I was on cloud nine when Kyle had readily agreed to allow me to have one of Arina's kittens when they were old enough. I slept peacefully and woke up in as good a mood as I had gone to bed in. I couldn't wait for the next eight weeks to pass so that I could have my first pet. Kyle seemed to be as happy with the decision as I was and smiled as I continued to prattle on through breakfast, repeating quite a bit of what I had the night before. To Unlock His Heart 125 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Nikolai, I'm glad this excites you so much, but you need to eat," he said, breaking into my ramblings. I blushed a bit and nodded, quickly devouring my breakfast so that neither of us would be late. I was still high on my cloud when I got to school, but that didn't last long as I was almost immediately reminded of the day before when I got into homeroom.
"Well if it isn't the momma's boy," someone sneered as I took my seat. "So tell me, freak, how was i
To Unlock His Heart 4I was pleased that Nikolai had gone out for the soccer team, even if by the time I got home Monday night he had fallen asleep in the bath. After getting him dried off and dressed in pajamas, I went to relax on the couch only to receive a call from Coach Moon. He wanted to have Nikolai join the soccer team, but he'd need a few things. One was a sports physical, which considering they were in the middle of tryouts, he would give me until next Monday to get. Another was cleats and shin guards, to which I readily agreed after seeing the nasty bruise on Nikolai's ankle. The last was a special diet for him.To Unlock His Heart 45 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
As he put it, Nikolai had an exceptional ability to force his body to go longer and harder than it wanted, which was great for a soccer player. He just wanted to ensure that he would have the proper nutrition to support the muscle growth and energy expenditure that was going to go along with this. He gave me of foods that would help and I breathed a sigh of relief that I had already been
To Unlock His Heart 3I was right. Monday morning came far too quickly and I'd far too little Sunday night as my brain kept rolling around everything that could happen the following day. Still, I was quick to get out of bed and shower, being careful of my stitches. I took my time wrapping the bandages and gauze around them again, having no idea what to really expect from the day and not wanting any dirt to get in them. I picked out a blue and white striped button down shirt and a pair of dark blue jeans that went nicely with the sneakers that Alex had picked out for me. I was just tucking the shirt in when Kyle's voice floated through the apartment. To Unlock His Heart 35 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Nikolai, breakfast's ready!" he called and I quickly threaded my belt through the loops to make sure the slightly too big jeans stayed up on my hips. I checked my appearance in the mirror one last time before grabbing my bookbag, gym bag, and white board and heading out to the kitchen. "Hey, you took your time this morning," Kyle commented as I sat down and beg
To Unlock His Heart 8Coach Moon hadn't been joking or even exaggerating a little bit when he said to come Monday prepared for serious practice. I honestly began to wonder if he was trying to kill us. First thing was the same ten laps around the field as we'd done everyday of tryouts, but now we were on a timer. Twenty minutes to circle the quarter mile track ten times! Just the thought nearly sapped all of my energy. A slight nudge from Skylar though and I fell into stop behind him and Serj, letting the rhythm they set guide me around the track. Those who didn't make it, we sent to the bleachers to do more endurance as punishment while the rest of us began to warm up.To Unlock His Heart 85 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Nikolai, make sure you completely warm up!" Skylar called from over by the coach and I blinked in confusion. They were talking and Skylar was animated in his excitement while the coach looked surprised and rather intrigued. I groaned inwardly as I slapped a hand over my face. I had honestly thought that they'd forget about that whole gymnast
To Unlock His Heart 27"This is Kyle Martin," I said, answering my cell phone without looking at it first. I didn't usually as it had to do with work nine times out of ten. I frowned a bit at the sudden onrush of words, so heavily accented that I barely made out mine and Nikolai's names in it.To Unlock His Heart 275 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Serj! Calm down, I can't understand you like this," I demanded, nearly yelling over the phone and attracting quite a bit of attention. Even still, I had a sinking feeling that something was horribly wrong. "Now, slowly, what is wrong?"
"Nikolai! Nikolai is gone!" he said, the panic still creating a thicker accent that I normally heard on the teen. But the fact that he was panicking meant I needed to pay attention. "H-he sent me a text saying 'help' and I came to the house and the door was wide open! He is gone!" My heart stopped in my chest. We'd contemplated Markov coming after me, but we hadn't for a moment thought that he knew where I lived or that Nikolai might have been in danger.
"Serj, listen to me," I said as
To Unlock His Heart 2Detective Kyle Martin explained to me that the father listed on my birth certificate was out of the country, so until he could be contacted I'd be staying with him. It seemed like it was weird to him, but I was just as shocked to hear it. My understanding was that I should have gone to a boys' home or a foster home until my biological father could be reached, but he explained that my fear of women had left my social worker with few choices. She could have either sent me somewhere that I'd freak out or leave me in the hospital to freak out. He said he didn't want to subject me to anything more and had volunteered to be my temporary guardian. To Unlock His Heart 25 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Well, this is my apartment," Kyle said as we walked in to the small two bedroom place. "It's not exactly the most tidy, but you shouldn't have to worry about anyone bothering you here. Tears of the Phoenix"Trouble will follow that child everywhere. It would be best if you killed him now." That was something the town elder said the day I was born. Monster 61The week was dragging by slowly. There was no change in Tarot's condition and I knew it was taking it's toll on both Conner and Dani. Not that I could blame them. I wished I could say that I was holding it together, but in truth, I was simply there, physically at least.Monster 615 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
I had issues sleeping still. I couldn't even begin to fall asleep when anyone else was in the room and as soon as Dani would return from one of his mind clearing walks, I'd be jolted awake again. And those rare moments of sleep would only come during daylight hours, which weren't worth anything. I knew the circles under my eyes were beginning to resemble Tarot's before this happened and I couldn't help but be a little envious that he was finally getting the sleep he needed.

Monster 16"You know, Jinx," Brad said as I came back down to the end of the bar he was sitting on after my third little show with Chris in the last hour. "If I didn't know he was straight and that you had no interest in him, I might get a bit jealous over these little shows you two put on." I laughed, a sound that few people ever heard from me while I was at work, and set a fresh beer on the bar for another customer.Monster 165 years ago in Fantasy More Like This
"He had plenty of time to show some interest," I said flippantly while I made a drink order for one of the waiters. "He had an entire year to consider coming over to the dark side before I met you and then no one had a chance in hell." The waiter took the tray of drinks with a roll of his eyes, obviously annoyed by how chatty I had been with Brad tonight. I didn't care, as Jack wasn't complaining, since any time Brad was in the bar my smile was genuine and not faked for the customers. And if Jack wasn't complaining, no one else had the balls to even dream of it.

At High Tide 8"Hey, Firecracker!" a voice said loudly, jolting me from my sleep. "Time to wake up!" I blinked rapidly, looking over at the door. Laoni stood in the doorway, smiling at me some. "Get up, shower, and get dressed. We're gonna go see Leo," he said. I nodded a little and slowly started to get out of bed. My body was stiff and rather sore from the day before, but I forced it to work with me so I could do what Laoni had said.At High Tide 84 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
I took a long time in the shower, thoroughly cleansing my entire body about three times over before I stepped out. I had to clean my new piercing too before I got dressed and headed upstairs. I had to pour a bowl of cereal since no one here knew how to cook nor did they think to have anything microwavable. As soon as I was done, we were heading out to the hospital again.
"How are you this morning, Firecracker?" Aaron asked as I leaned my head against the window again.
"Sore..." I muttered. "And worried. Did Keoni come home last night?"
"No..." Laoni finally
Cigarettes and Handcuffs 3I didn't start to come around until the room brightened, the morning sun pouring through the window to land directly on my face and prevent me from continuing to sleep. I sat up with a groan, twisting my body to stretch my sore back as much as I could. It helped some, but not nearly enough to remove the reminder of how it'd gotten to be so sore in the first place. I dragged myself up and cursed as I realized I now had a problem. Other than the towel around my waist, I was completely naked without any clothing to speak of. With a sigh, I made my way quietly to Aubrey's room, knocking on his door gently.Cigarettes and Handcuffs 35 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Who is it?" Aubrey's voice called through the door.
"It's Luca, Mr. Aubrey," I called back. "I... um... have a small problem." I heard a snap of fingers followed by a command for 'Baxter' to sit before the door opened and he gestured me to come in. I eyed the dog warily, figuring that he was as protective over Aubrey as his grandfather was.
"What's the matter? And don't mind Baxter. He'

I shook my head a bit, to clear the cold water cobwebs from my mind before bending over to pick up my clothes. Monster 52I rolled over and groaned as the alarm clock went off at nine the next morning. I could smell breakfast cooking and my stomach was absolutely thrilled with the idea, but the rest of my body didn't want to move. Hell, I didn't even want to be awake yet. I rubbed my face in the back of Rain's furry neck, sighing softly before I crawled out of bed and made my way to the bathroom for a shower. As I picked up my body spray, my mind flashed back to the last time I had gone out with Serj and Skyler, specifically the look on Serj's face when I had come out into the kitchen. I caught myself blushing again as I wondered if he had liked the way the spray had smelled. Almost immediately though, I pushed the thought aside, mentally scolding myself for thinking such thoughts about my friend. But it was rather hard to deny that I did like it when he looked at me like that, even if I didn't understand what the look was.

To Unlock His Heart 16Tuesday morning came quickly and I was just as quick to shove down the lingering memory of the dreams from the night before. I knew that if I didn't, things would be rather awkward when I saw Serj at lunch today. He was doing his best to fend off the rumours that he was gay, he didn't need me staring at him as memories of my dreams lately floated through my head. Actually, neither of us really needed that right now. I was in just as bad with the rumour that Serj and I were dating. Just saying I wasn't gay wouldn't help that and might only make things worse for Serj in the end.To Unlock His Heart 165 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Even without my denial, people were still on about the rumour of Serj and I dating when I got to school. I really did want to deny it all, but at the same time no one was asking me if it was true or not. It made me blush a little to think that Serj may have also not
