This chunky looking thing was originally dubbed the "Bunker" and was also originally a smaller class of ship but having since dropped its class from the game we decided to resurrect the design for use as a larger Capital ship.
The ship is very heavily armoured and is meant as a closer quarters support vessel, it has tons of point defences and abilities that uses agro to force enemy ships to engage it rather than other ships in the fleet, its a tank and can take a lot of punishment. Its weapon systems aren't very powerful and mostly consist of point defences to counter fighters and bombers.
It primary function is to act as a buffer between the enemies fleet and your own soaking up vast amounts of damage that would otherwise cripple lesser ships

Also here is the latest alpha gameplay footage form the game where you can see another Capital ship (the Basilisk) being used, the model is old and is currently undergoing a re-modelling. [link]

Here is the Manticore, a massive prototype beam weapon that was developed planet-side but realising they needed to test it against real fleets and in space they quickly fitted it on a rig and attached some engines, a rushed job with little to no armour or point defences, its all laser cannon baby.
Its also stupidly powerful, it has multiple fire modes, one a super long range a brutal single shot, being a beam weapon it never misses and usually they are very short range weapons, this prototype however is about 200 times bigger than the standard. Its other firing mode includes an EMP shot and overload function that sends out an EMP burst around the ship giving it at least some defence against fighters and bombers.
This ship should be supported at all times, its lack of armour means its rather weak if engaged, that's if you can get close to it, its quite agile as well for a 1 mile long cannon.

This is the pirate faction skin for the Human capitol ship Laminar, its essentially a flying (or is it floating in space?) bunker designed to take a ton of punishment, whilst it isn't really decked out with powerful weapons it does have a formidable array of point defences. Slap one of these into the middle of a large engagement and watch it unleash a hail storm of projectiles into enemy fighters and missiles.

This is the pirate version so it looks rather evil and retains the look of a well armoured hulk, as such its named after a Bull. Also as with the Basilisk pirate skin it has fire, yes that's right fire in space what you gonna do about it?

Not so long ago we decided that the current design for the Human fleet was a bit too utilitarian, our creative director realised that trends in today's society showed a lean more towards sleek, smooth, and curved designs so he created a few rough side profile concepts for the new Human fleet style which he dubbed the "iPod & Bulldozer" design meaning the ships would have both aesthetic flares from both the rugged utilitarian design as well as a contrasting smooth and curved design.

So I was thrown a load of concepts and I got to work on 3D views of the ships, this is the 2D concept for the Dreadnought as well as the new ingame model that's literally just been finished, no fancy lighting just the ingame model. Changes to the design were made on the fly as is apparent.

This is the Samael (angel of death) it's the Pirate faction skin for the Manticore prototype beam platform Capital ship. It's a rather weak ship in terms of armour as it doesn't really have any but it's main purpose is to sit miles away from any battle and fire huge beams of death into enemy ships, essentially pissing on your parade from a great distance.

Another redesign 2D concept for the Human Battleship from the MMORTS game Novus Aeterno.
This ship has gone through more redesigns than any other Human ship in the game but finally this design was decided upon.
The side on concept was done by our creative director, I was tasked with doing the 3D view which is now being modelled for ingame use.

This is the Zealot faction skin for the Basilisk capitol ship in the MMORTS game Novus Aeterno. The Zealots are basically religious nuts hence all the gold and Gothic style decorations.

Here is a concept illustration I did for the human Cruiser, the original concept sketch was done by our talented creative director Rodrigo Vega :iconiririv: I had a basic 3D model of the original sketch to work with and worked on top of that to improve the ships overall design.
This concept also served as a guide for future Human ship designs.

Another painting for the game Novus Aeterno. This image was used as a guide to show the look and general feel of the big gas and dust clouds that are to be added into the games space to make space less empty and boring. There is a huge fleet of ships breaking orbit from a planet that can just be seen behind the big dust cloud. This is the first image I did that showed off all the ships the human race has, minus a big ass one but more on that later. The ships are paint-overs of 3D models created by our very talented 3D ship modeler :iconpukey82: some adjustments were made but the basic shape was kept for accuracy.

Here is a chart I made to give the 3D guys and texture artists a better idea of the ships scale, I was also tasked with creating a new texture for the ships the original one was a little too inconsistent so I made this texture.
Some ships have been adjusted recently and you can see the new updated and fully textured Dreadnought model over at the games Facebook page.
The game will have many other ships but these 4 are the core hull types for the Human race.
